They have an awesome sheriff that supports their deputies and they don’t work for a county that does not support them and provides them with resources to do the jobs well. From a citizen on the outside looking in: This has to be the best Sheriff's Department in California, if not, the Nation. Under the leadership of Sheriff Bianco coupled with the God fearing men and women of this agency is what makes it so great. What a privilege it must be to work there. This agency is a beacon of light, that hopefully one day, all Sheriffs and Chiefs will follow.

It's a progression. You'd likely start as a jail deputy, then push to patrol. If you excel in that you can put in for detective eventually. It's a learning process the entire way. Even in the jail you can learn a lot-most inmates are more than willing to talk to you, tell you what got them there, etc. Understanding why some people do what they do is a big part of criminal investigations.
