Thanks John, I chuckled at your comment about folding arms across chestión! I too was a gym guy many years ago and personal trainer. Always had to wear big shirts and fold my arms. Guys at the gym always ridiculed me cause after a session I would sit at the snack bar and read a "train magazine." Now that I'm 65, I train at home just to be fit and play with my trains!! Still fold my arms, cause it is comfortable!!😅 cheers Vince Mont-St-Gregoire, Quebec

I'll never forget feeling embarrassed as a teen modeller, I'd repainted a loco into an older livery (correctly and very nicely, I was so proud of my work) and I showed it off at the local club and some older guy laughed at me and said what a waste of time as I hadn't removed a couple of fittings on the model which meant that it was incorrect for that livery and that everyone knew that. Now I look back and laugh and think of my layout that Is L shaped, and split in half between 1930s and 1990s with my rolling stock crossing the rift regularly and knowing that some people must hate it.

How many times do you now see old liveries painted onto new buses to showcase their heritage.

@@royking1 Just recently Geoff Marshall posted a vid on a class 455 repainted in a heritage BR livery. And he pointed out they had to change it a bit to meet modern regulations like doors in a contrasting colour. And it looked amazing. So good. Every detail doesn't have to be 100% the old livery. If anything I'd wish we saw some of the newer stock was painted in a heritage liveries. e.g. a Crossrail class 345 in a Network SouthEast livery.

Hi John, I subscribed yesterday after seeing your "rivet counter" video which popped up in my KZbin feed. Having experienced the rivet counter wallys myself, I totally agree, my layout. my rules, if you dont like, jog on and as my dear old mum used to say " if you cant say anything nice ,keep yer gob shut!" Rivet counters are the very reason i have posted very little of my layouts. Liking the idea of the RuleOne community👍🏻, modellers should not have to fear showing their work. Looking forward to catching up on your previous videos! 😊 All the best Rob

Now, what you need is a Scale Model Scenery Dylington Custard Company ghost sign or one of their new billboards, which comes with several advertisements, one being Dylington Custard, both items based on our layout. Like your layout. It shows a dedication to quality work. It's very consistent, which gives it an appearance of artistic mind ,a creative mind. You take care of details to complete the scenes. This gives the viewer the feeling that all is as it should be. How often do you get, " biy that looks so real " ? I never understood rivet counters, so miuch time wasted counting. If you can run trains and feel you " there" what else do you need? Ehen I was a boy , I played with my Lionel trains on the living room floor. I was there heard the whistle, felt the wind as it rushed by, smelled the ozone from the sparking third rail. We do what we can to make it real --- for us. What a delite .

That was me mentioning about the clock, which I will do myself when I eventually create my layout. Thanks for the ideas as I haven't started mine yet and please keep the uploads coming.....

I’d seen your layout being recommended to me on facebook occasionally, never actually followed over there nor did I know you had a youtube channel. I have now rectified that 😃👍 had a look through the photos and it looks absolutely mint. I’ve been planning a layout for years, granted I’ve never had the time, money nor space to actually start one. I love seeing what people do with their own personal layouts, it’s inspiring for me to see the passion people put in. While I’ve only seen yours for probably the last couple months, what I have seen has been fab, and I love what you’ve done here.

Loved your comments. I have been at the 'front line' years ago from rivet counters. There is no need for it. I have an o gauge layout in my garden now. It gives me hours of pleasure but I've only shewn it to one person because of bad attitude by, so called, enthusiasts in the past. Even now, I make apologies for some of the stock that I run on my layout, such as, I have lots of pre grouping wagons and one coach which would probably not have made it to my chosen time frame of the late 1930s. The GWR would either have painted them in their colours or scrapped them. I have my layout in the garden, and track cleaning prior to and it runs from one shed to another via the garden and it runs from one shed to another via the garden from one shed to another via the garden and track cleaning prior to a running session can be a major task in itself! l, like you, I used to work for BR and later Central Trains ( I am retired now after serving for 28 years, mainly as a guard). My partner Carole is in a nursing home after a nasty fall down the stairs meaning she can no longer use her hands, arms or legs, so there is just me and the dog now so my hobby gives me a diversion which I enjoy very much, and I no longer tolerate rivet counters as I now realise that they are not anything to do with the hobby, just killjoys, trying to get arise at someone else;s expense. So I am really glad you have stood up to be counted as one who stands up for our hobby. Regards, Paul in Cornwall.

Congratulations on your layout. Like all layouts on KZbin it is better than mine because I have not yet started to build mine! However, when I get going yours will still be better, because I am still a beginner (not counting the oval I built 50 years ago when I was a bit younger). Nevertheless, mine will be infinitely better than no layout at all. Whats more I will have done it and I hope I can only improve! I have heard a lot of You-tubers emphasize that it is "your" layout and I totally agree. Mine will be based on SR in the 1950s - but will have locos and rolling stock from other periods. I have now decided that I will include a dinosaur or two. Of course, they MUST be to scale and of course, all from the same period - you cant mix Jurassic with Triassic - that would just be wrong!

Hi John. I subscribed after watching this video. I don't have one yet, but I'm hoping to build an N gauge model railway based around my local area on the West coast of Scotland. One idea has me running Scotrail liveried Kato Shinkansen through a station on the Glasgow - Ayr line which would also have a (non-existant) preservation society running steam locos on trips. Other ideas centre around the question - What if the Caledonian Railway still existed? Looking at maps on the National Library of Scotland website reveals so much information it can be hard to form a clear picture of what I want to achieve as there is so much tempting trackwork. There was a lot of industry in my home town which is mostly now gone or substantially changed. I'd estimate around 98% of the railway from 100, or even 50 years ago no longer exists, although some cuttings, embankments and bridges remain to give a taste of how things would have looked. I have come to the conclusion that it matters not a jot if the scene modelled is 100% accurate. I don't know what a 1900s iron foundry looked like, or what roads were like before motor cars were widely available. As long as I am happy with the outcome, that is what matters. If I choose to have EMUs running with steam goods trains on the same track, that's fine. And if I choose to share it on KZbin then it will be "My layout - My rules". Rivet counters / gatekeepers can press the X button in the corner. Looking forward to learning more from you. All the best! Colin

Beautiful man! Im a new subscriber so seeing your layout for the first. I like the little scenes, the working men, the small stories. They tell me you have a great imagination and must really have loads of fun with your layout. And the range of your skills is very wide! I mean, I see weathered rolling stock, I see lots of detail in trackwork with signalboxes, cables, switches, I see lots of detail in the models of the buildings, the backdrop is really well chosen, you are obviously into electronics if I see all the signals. Yes, your skillset is very broad indeed. And you know your limitations. I think the sizeof the layout is manageable, youve chosen and developed a simple from here to there trackplan with loads of variations. So yeah, I mean, I can see the tradeoffs, the small sacrifices, but man, what a layout. Great work! Happy modelling! Best hobby in the world!

I did reply to Iron Horse but neglected to reply here as well - your layout, along with others, is inspirational for my own layout (British outline but I’m in Canada and do have a mixed bag of some American and some Australian stuff, for a laugh). Rivet counters would lose their minds at what I run and how I run it; and I can never achieve the level of detail and complexity that you have but I enjoy what I do. And that’s what it’s all about. Enjoyment (though a ‘gagging session’ is probably a different kind of enjoyment 😂😂) Your attitude to all of this is great - don’t let them frustrate you. There are those that will sap enjoyment from any pastime. Just imagine how sad their lives must be to get pleasure from denigrating other folks. Keep it up and I’m looking forward to your next instalment! Dan

So true mate our hobby is What we want it to be, not what we are told it should be, if the rivet counters don't like yours I would be hung from the nearest tree. I am 73 with poor eyesight and love to paint my locos and stock in my own fictional livery and even worse I run dean singles alongside class 66 diesels. Hi I’m just watching this vid via an ap on me telly :) I watched the previous vid regarding rivet counters And agree with you all the way. At the end of the day it’s YOUR railway I work on the railway I model in N and looking through your videos as given me some ideas. I don’t look at modelling true to life , the can of stella brilliant advert for a brewery Neil vid will watch more

Loving the honesty and humility fella, that takes guts. Have to take issue with how you’ve modelled the Network Rail guys…the bloke third from left is actually a size 10 boot in real life but you’ve clearly modelled him wearing size 9…!! Shame on you! Ha…I reckon Harold Road will be a place rivet counters fear to tread. “If you’d like to sponsor me Stella…” 😂 Keep up the good work fella. Kindness rules!!

The can of Stella was placed on the layout on purpose, to show something out of scale, a few people got it....😅 thanks for getting in touch 😊

Hi, just joined your channel. I know what you mean about gatekeepers. I wanted to test some track and picked the first locomotive I came to and a couple of coaches. Someone had a go telling me l put the wrong coaches with the wrong locomotive. I also had them moaning about the way I talk, not bothering to find out I have throat cancer. Too many Trolls about. Excellent video

I wonder how many of those "rivet counter" critics have a perfect to the last rivet and leaf model railway, none I'll bet, because they can't, maybe they're jealous. Some have astonishingly good, about as real as you can get layouts, Simon George and his Heaton Lodge for one, but he wouldn't criticise, he knows very few can do what he has done no matter how good a modeller they are and really, good is as much enjoyment as possible just as much as realism. I have 0 gauge, I'm planning a layout in the loft and even up there, in my 12 ft x 16ft space, it'll be a tight squeeze. As I've said before your scenery is outstanding, not least because you can!

Count me as one of your new subscribers John... Yup, plenty have commented about my Di-lithium mine on my layout that actually looks like a warp core... Seriously, I don't care because it's my fantasy land. Love the detail you have in Harold Road, but those track gaps would annoy the hell out of me.

Rivet counters forget Uk OO and N are not consistent scale to gauge, so if a rivet is out by 0.2mm, who cares? Well done!

Hi John -I agree what you say about some of the Facebook Groups , there are 4 including my Club page that I feel happy to post videos of my layout and get positive comments and positive feedback. . There is one of them that is well known and elitist that is full of people having a peeing up the wall contest about whose knowledge is the greatest , I would never dare to post my Hornby Railroad loco with its Bluetooth decoder as I would be run out of town 😀😀 Cheers Kev

Over the years, I have found these "rivet counters" to be as credible as a dingleberry trying to identify as a turd. Best to just ignore them and let them think they are gods gift to the internet. I just found your YT channel, and really enjoy your commentary and layouts. Keep up the good work!

What a pitiful lack of attention... There should be an Action Man wearing full battle fatigues and carrying a 1941 Sten gun, parachuting onto the top of the third carriage on the 18:25 service to Weston-super-Mare. I can't believe that you missed that crucial detail 😉 Seriously though... I feel your pain. Some people have nothing better to do than criticise others. Your layout has more rivets than I could ever do, and is superb in every detail. It's a hobby that we do for our own pleasure, so who cares what the 'moaning old gits' say.

Just subscribed. I’m not ‘in to’ model railways or anything, though I do enjoy watching the skill, passion and commitment, which is why I occasionally find myself watching some videos. I’m just starting to understand your comments, thoughts and opinions on gatekeepers/rivet counters, and as someone who isn’t a modeller, I don’t feel I have any skin in the game to comment, though I understand where your considered and well put point of view is coming from. But never justify, or even think about, how you fold your arms, etc. You’re not in this world, or on KZbin, to have to explain yourself for such trivial nonsense. People can obviously answer questions, or have their own opinions about pretty much anything. But don’t entertain them, or waste your time and talents even giving stuff like that any consideration. You’re a better man than that, with more important things going on in your life. Looking forward to watching the channel and learning more about your layout and hobby.

Your passion for the hobby is obvious, it matters to you and that shows. Collectively those that enjoy the hobby in all its interpretations should make sure our positive voices are louder than the negative ones. On a point of order though, what’s all this about ‘getting things finished’? 😂we all know a layout is never finished, unlike a can of beer 😁 good to see you happier 👍

You have a lovely layout. It's the can of Stella what makes it great 😂😂😂. I normally have my trainspotters tea mug in full view. No one should be put of showing their efforts. Some people seem to like my basic and primitive layout. Don't be driven underground by the rivet counters . Cheers Paul.

Yep armchair perfectionists , recently on the 125 year great central railway w, end KZbin video , somebody placed a very long comment saying it was all wrong and. How the the public could not trust the company with incorrect information, completely missing the whole point of supporting the railway which was a great event for many hundreds of people, comment has now been removed, let's all help our fellow train enthusiasts and heritage railways, thanks for sharing,

Keep up the good work! sadly it seems to be a ‘human condition’ to criticique peoples efforts without invitation in many hobbies, some seem to have a ‘need’ to prove they know more than you do or they can do something better than you can! if you ignore them, eventually they will lose interest and move on. just for the record, my own small layout covers the era from ww1 through to the early 1990’s 🤣

Hi there, I have just come back to model railways after quite a long time. I have decided to have a go at N-Gauge as I can only have a small tail chaser layout as I don't have much space for OO, let alone a large N-Gauge layout either. Unfortunately I have had to take early retirement through poor health. Watching a lot of youtube videos as well as yours lately I am pretty shocked at how thoughtless people can be. I agree this behaviour really has to stop. I watch Charlie Bishop's Chadwick Parkway and his videos are pretty entertaining like yours and even he has been getting stick from Rivet counters and keyboard warriors. As you say Rule 1 applies. It's your railway, you do your best like the rest of us do. Most of these rivet counters couldn't make an half decent effort themselves. All the best, and don't let the idiots ruin your enjoyment of the hobby. 👍
