Glenn brings up acoustic treatment a bit here and has been harping on it for years. He's definitely not wrong though. It is way more important than people in general give it credit for. Thanks to Glenn harping on it for ages I took it to heart when building and finishing my band's practice/recording space. Framed out the walls, put in acoustic absorbing insulation, put mass loaded vinyl between the studs and the drywall, more insulation in the ceiling joists and finished that off as well. The room echoed like hell but no sound escaped. That was part one done. Part two was putting in bass traps, hanging sound absorption blankets on the walls and installing sound absorption panels on the ceiling. Now, that room is very quiet, some have said it's kind of eerie even. The sound deadening properties of that room are such that if you walk from the room next door and into the band room you can actually hear the difference in volume reduction. Glad I listened to Glenn on that one. It also keeps the neighbors from calling the cops when we have band practice.

I've added a bit of sound treatment to my home studio and plan to build more panels and bass traps soon, and yes, it is a big help for not a ton of money if you have basic DIY skills (ability to use a saw, drill, utility knife, and a staple gun for the fabric basically). I also did a lot of recording tests on my drums in different parts of my basement recording space, as well as in my living room and master bedroom, which are the only other two rooms in my house drums wouldn't completely overwhelm. The results were interesting, as the same kit with the same mics in different rooms and even different parts of the same room sounded very different. I held onto those tests and may record some tracks upstairs in my living room at some point because the ceiling is taller than the basement and the drums sounded KILLER in there. The basement is way more convenient though, and will probably sound just as good once I add some more treatment.

In regards to acoustic treatment back in the day we did also other things to get better sound, we used to put the fender RAD amp on a pillow for better bass, or put bass amp in the corner of room, sometimes facing in to get the bassy reflections. If recording in a rehearsal room we had two wood things on wheels, one side would be ceramic tiled, the other side had carpet tiles. If an amp had bad mids or highs but limited EQ knobs we would cover with a t shirt. Lots you can do for cheap with every day things, like hanging thick curtains on the walls.

In regards to reverb on guitars, one trick I have used in the past is to add reverb to the delay in the mix (and not the direct guitar signal), but, don’t put the reverb in line with the delay, use an aux out from the delay return, and add the reverb, HPF the input to the reverb, (I tend to go for harsher plate reverbs for this , Yamaha Sox and REV series plates work pretty well), and then do a high boost/low cut EQ on the reverb output, sort of around 800 to 2k (where exactly depends on the song, not super radical, but the idea is to make it more harsh than smooth). Add the reverb to the mix until you can only just hear it against the isolated guitar and delay in the mix, then go back to the full mix. For me this makes the delay ‘pop’ a little bit more in the mix, and I can then back it off a little more, and get the feel of the delay without it being as high in the mix. It doesn’t work every time, but, if you are having trouble getting the guitar delay to sit in the mix, it can often work

I'm a PC guy personally, I prefer it to Apple and I've never really had a problem with it (doing my own demo recordings and KZbin videos though, not a commercial studio), but that's just a preference thing. I completely understand why people love Apple! That's the beauty of recording music these days, you have options! Prefer Windows? Go Windows. Prefer Apple? Use Apple. If it works for you it's right. I don't understand why people get defensive about their choice in OS (obviously ignoring light ribbing and jokes between friends).

Hey Glenn! So I now have a couple of questions that I've been trying to figure out myself to no avail: 1. Is the Macbook Air M1 a viable option for recording music and using plugins? I'm choosing this version of MacBook specifically because it's the only one I can afford right now. 2. Is there any laptop (not Mac) that can rival the price of any other versions of MacBook Air (M2 or M3) that is equally powerful at the same task or even better for the same price or cheaper? 3. What would you recommend as an option for baritone guitar pickups (intended for high-gain use, of course) that don't break the bank? I'm having trouble with mine since they squeal like a pig as soon as I run the slightest amount of distortion or gain on my amp, and it is even somewhat noticeable on clean settings as well. Also, everyone else is welcome to contribute, this question is not only for Glenn.

mac or PC, like anything we do in this line of work or our hobbies, what are you doing? what are your needs? it can be different for each person and their preference. It all depends on your needs. Deadmau5 talked about using a ridiculous custom PC in his studio, but when he tours its Mac all day due to reliability and ease of replacing anything that fucks up. One can pop into a Best Buy or Apple store and get what they need.

I never had any issues with PCs over the years, the only times I encountered system fails that I remember were not related to recording. I still don't like Apple as a company and whenever I tried macs they were just never comfortable for me. I also believe in having one super versatile machine that can do everything, rather than have many machines take away space, that's also why I stopped gaming on consoles a couple of years now. I don't see a reason why I should switch as I'm totally fine with what I have.

GLENNNN. Had an encounter on another channel. I had to share. The video was about why Les Paul players wrap their string around the tailpiece, and how the break angle and pole pieces touching the body increase sustain yadda yadda. Found this gem: Comment - "Some guy on KZbin used an oscilloscope testing the the same pickups/harness in different bodies and the differences were indiscernible....much to the chargrin of the "tone woods" officionados, I'm sure.. Your tests prove that unless you need a 28 second note over a 26 second note you're basically spinning your wheels. Response - "So the scope sees the primary wave form and your ear hears all the harmonics and we are supposed to believe the scope can discern subtle differences. Audiophiles and techs enter the same battle. Tech says all capacitors with the same value are identical and interchangeable while anyone with a decent ear can clearly hear differences. Same with cables, harnesses, pickups tones woods. Which is better? Thats on you. Its like saying all wines taste the same because they are made from grapes." I had to share. Fuck you Glenn

Yo Glen, been a fan for a good while now and I have a question regarding brutal death metal, a subgenre of death metal. You’re obviously very well experienced in recording metal and getting clear, but still powerful sounding mixes. What do/would you do in the case where a band comes in wanting a much gnarlier sound for a brutal death metal mix? Take the albums “Trading Pieces” by Deeds of Flesh or “Effigy of The Forgotten” by Suffocation for example. If a band came into your studio wanting their songs to sound as dirty as that, would you assist them in getting a similar sound? Or would it go against your values as an audio engineer? Much love bro, curious as to how you’d respond to this question!

The M chips and restarting guitar this year landed me with apple again as well. I didn't have many windows related technical issues for decades and I had more stress with Apples ecosystem than every other because Apple decides what and how you do it and how much you owe them for it. A third option, especially when you are on a very tight budget and rely on hardware that is out of production for a while - always remember there is also Linux and it doesn't have the typical latency issues Windows notoriously has either.

Looking forward to the Kahler thing. Have yet to try one myself despite wanting to for decades, but it seems like such an over-hated trem/vibrato system when all of the engineering seems sound and the actual legit musicians who've used them professionally during and since the 80s (who presumably have had them installed and set up properly) didn't seem to have the same issues that the average online guitar forum knuckle-dragging cork sniffers do. Would not be surprised if most of the hate comes from people who couldn't be bothered to learn how to set them up properly and the rest from people who freak out about any wood being removed from a guitar after the initial period where the wood needed to be removed from the guitar to actually make it into a guitar.

as a Logic Pro and Reaper user - Logic Pro works great for basically anything right out of the box. You fine tune it, and I feel it's much more intuitive with certain routing methods and the midi functions are far superior. But Reaper is the epitome of PC's - it's barebones until you turn it into what you want it to be. I enjoy Reaper, although Logic Pro is my home. I would argue the Logic price tag is easily justified by the integration of Apple's sound libraries and plugins. It is incredible what you get and how good the baked in plugins are. I would also like to state the Carvin V3's value and versatility. I don't think you can beat it for the price, albeit they're all used.

Oh also about the antelope galaxy thing yeah valid. Hope it continues to go well for you! I just can’t recommend them to people from my friend’s experiences. I also had people say that the plugs in weren’t as good as the UAD stuff. With many plugins with UAD being native as well (with often no differences) I’d love to see you do some comparisons. Or even grab an Apollo to show the differences. I think where antelope is winning in the market now is an affordable interface with tons of converters. But for many people it has no preamps, so it’s almost designed for a studio with a console.

Discovered they were actually the worst of both worlds. Seven different types of harsh vocals mixed in with the most bland, generic clean singing this side of a bath soap commercial. If you're going to do 100% clean vocals to go for an operatic/power metal vibe you better be Messiah Marcolin or Eric Adams, not the dude who records jingles for ad agencies.

When it comes to experience with stuff (like software) I actually never had any serious issues with Windows 10 and every time I hear people say that "Mac is better in terms of stability" I really can't relate. Since I've switched from Win7 to Win10 (yeah, I've skipped Win8) I had no issues with it. And trust me, with the way I use my PC it should probably blow up long time ago. The last time I had a "serious issue" with my Win10 was when my SSD died but it's hardly fault of the OS. Recently I've switched my 6 SSD drives (3 of them are SATA and 3 are NVME) from my old PC to a new one, installed few new drivers and it works like a charm, no formatting and reinstalling needed, everything works nice. And the funny thing is that few years back when I was testing games on iOS and Mac I was actually able to "brick" an iMac by....... switching resolution in a game. It turned out that the resolution I selected was not supported and there was no info about it or any kind of "safeguard" that would prevent me from using this setting. The only thing I could do was to restart the computer. And after I did it turned out that this issue was a "global" issue (so it was not just in game but in the OS itself) and it made my iMac useless. And I could actually say the same thing about Android vs iOS - since my days with Samsung Galaxy Note10+ I have never had any major issues with it. Right now I have Galaxy S23 Ultra and works like a charm. So yeah, I'd say that if something does or does not work may be really just opinion based on the experience we have with things.

Oh yeah, dude. Table saw is a scary piece of work. Yet, I've managed to build six guitars and by some odd miracle my fingers are still in place. Can't say haven't lost my fingerprints to the band sander a few times, though. :)

Yeah I like the audient evo16. That said, mines in for repair for a second time. Which is bit of a worry. Seems like there might be a bit of an overheating issue as it seems like the specific issue (occasionally goes crazy with a high pitch 'scream' sound) turns up a lot on audients forums. So yeah... Hopefully audient figures it out in a firmware revision. Which is a shame, because its a beautiful sounding inferface. Those pres are just great.

Recording questions? Here's one! Does the Chaotica Eyeball do anything for you microphone? It's supposed to be great if you have an untreated room or a noisy environment. Also, Green Goo! It's a glue that helps with sound proofing. Or does it?

Glen!, Hans from Sweden here, i am wondering if you have ever made an "old OLD! school" drum recording/live band recording.. Meaning 1-2 Stereo mic´s in a room, the whole band playing in the same room?? And if, what was your results??

Music today is like that movie “ the menu” it has become so perfected and mixed that it’s lost its soul. Some of those imperfections are what make the song. Sometimes you just want a cheeseburger.

There's no such thing as “soul,” there's no evidence of its existence. However, overproduction is a thing, and it sucks a lot. I feel like the music doesn't even matter today, everybody is only competing in sound design and loudness, and that's why it all blends into a boring grey mash that doesn't sound musical anymore. You can have everything synthesized perfectly to the grid, but you still need to write good shit. And there's no formula to that. It's a matter of both skill and luck.

Yeah i will agree the EVO 16 is a beast for the price, The auto gain is just an amazing feature especially recording solo, Just cuts the bullshit guess work. About to get the SP8 just to have that extra bit of inputs for the instruments.

I had a realization the other day that the concept of wealth basically means that you have something that someone else wants. If you say Gibsons or expensive pickups are pointless, then nobody else wants what you've got, and you no longer have wealth in that piece of equipment. But with things like that, maybe we should consider how much WE want it, ourselves, and not whether someone else wants it? If you spent a load of money on your Seymor Duncans or whatever and it "brought the guitar to life," well... Good on ya! Enjoy! If someone else proved that you wasted your money, well... Bummer on that, but that should not affect your enjoyment of whatever it is you used to enjoy. If you don't enjoy it because nobody else wants it, well... Maybe you bought it for the wrong reasons.

Glenn, here we are at 3am, binge watching your videos..... Thanks for helping us out with advice about gear and saving money. I have an EVH iconic now and when I played a gig in Windsor of all places, 2 other bands had the same head which killed me. I bought a DBX 131s years ago and now thats in the FX loop of the iconic. It makes me stand out to the other bands sharing the same gear. I think EQs in the FX loop is a lost art. You can really shape your sound with them. Fuck you Glenn.

I first started watching you because you use reaper. there is not really anyone else who has videos as comprehensive as you do about reaper. Ive often heard its main disadvantage is in making electronic music. never noticed that problem myself but for most people at this channel that wont be an issue at all. reaper shines as a DAW when recording instruments in my opinion.

I'm a religious fanatic, the icon is finnic pagan relligion thingy with ties to zoroastrianism. But hey i got your point on the "it just works". So im designing a semi open s, but its like for intels serverfarms, like rendering, fx processing, through the cloud use a chromebook even and the cloud based x86 computes the hard renders and at a higher bitrate/depth. so like its not ready in a while, but yea arm-linux compatability with plugins, and now they make new plugins for just arm... because arm is power efficient. as is my powersoaked, max gain, max volume valvehead. as DC as aswell. i know, religious muck

8:26 so I just converted an 8x20 shed into my studio space/ hang out area for my son when he gets older. Instead of putting up drywall, I used faced insulation and put up semithink curtains. I can not speak to the bass response but I can say it’s very dead and I am able to mix better than when I was in a room with no treatment at all. Glenn, what are your thoughts?

"Gen-x retirement home?" I resemble that comment! (In fairness, isn't that an apt description of 'metal' as whole these days?) I love my Kahlers. Strictly metal rhythm player and could use a hard-tail but I prefer the feel of a locked Kahler by miles. That palm-muting roll off is so smooth. I look forward to the video.
