Very good presentation. All aspects of rudder hunting has been dealt with. Congratulations dear Ramesh for painstakingly made the animation. It will definetly be helpful to many Chief Engineers to understand the working principle and systematic fault finding. Thanks once again. On follow up mode, Rudder remains in the position as long as steering wheel is kept at that position. If the steering wheel is spring loaded, the moment you leave the wheel, rudder will come back to midship.

One of my friend was telling me that during his watch as a third officer his captain who jut joined the ship one day back asked Bosun to put the ship to FOLLOW-UP mode from AUTO PILOT and he did so but she was still at AUTO PILOT and captain got panic that why steering is not coming on auto and called every officer on Bridge meanwhile third officer told him that it is because the NOBE or LEVER might came out and BOSUN while putting it back changed it to FOLLOW-UP while original position still at the auto pilot and after checking it was found that this is the problem.

Like always more beautifully done sir, every time with a better presentation than before. Sir in troubleshooting hydraulic about the sticky solenoid valve point, is there a possibility of this jerky nature of rudder to be because of pitching of ship in rough weather ? Can that be taken into account before jumping into faulty solenoid valve or so conclusion? Also, can air trapped in the hydraulic system due to leakage in the system be the reason for slow response of the rudder movement on either direction? I mean if rudder is responding slow movement only on one side i.e either port or starboard?
@geetharajan47464 жыл бұрын
the checking of air in the system is the first step,eventhough it is very unlikely .if ram packings are bad there are chances. ssr
@rmetcvideos4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tousiff..Tnks for you kind words as always.Air in the system is always a possibility, but the reasoning which I always hear is suspect in my opinion. I find it hard to believe that a leak will cause air ingress. Hydraulics is always about high to medium pressure oil always being available in every part of the line..So question of Air ingress should never Arise.So my belief is that in OPen loop Hydraulic system , where pump takes suction from TANK..Air can Enter due to two reasons--- Low level Of OIl in Tank which during Pitching can contribute to momentary air ingress. Other more likely point is..When you have low level of oil in Tank (Maybe still more than Alarm Level), The return Oil from deck etc ..if it FALLS from a height inside the tank ...can cause a lot of bubbling and this can find its way to pump suction.Even in a Ram type steering Gear ..and the RAm seals are Defective..OIL will LEAK for Sure.. but still Air will not enter the system through the seal. This is my reasoning. Have a Look at the the 4 ram circuit..Introspect ...See if you are able to understand my thought process...
@TousiffME4 жыл бұрын
@@rmetcvideos thank you sir, will definitely look into 4 ram.

Ive always wanted to know, can a vessel move in a straight line, even though knowing that propellers is subjected to tranverse thrust, on upper and lower blade, and since the upper and lower blade operate on different depths, the transverse thrust can never be equalized, so ive read that this unbalanace causes angular thrust which pushes the vessel to go either port or stbd side ( depending on if its right or left handed propeller ) alittle, so could someone please confirm if this is true and false

Sorry, how is NFU method is actually working? What is happening after we move the controller left or right? Plz sir i have so much confusion
@rmetcvideos2 жыл бұрын
The rudder will KEEP on going to port as long as the controller is operated..In FU mode you tell the rudder to go to a PARTICULAR angle, but in NFU mode u can only tel it yo go to prt side or Stbd side
@bhageshkatoch29442 жыл бұрын
@@rmetcvideos agreed sir but my question is where the signal is going? I read somewhere by NFU mode we are controlling 3 solenoid v/vs. Particularly I have confusion about the working.
@kapila75072 жыл бұрын
In non follow up operate directional valve manualy untill rudder reach to desired angle. Onece you release the joistic directional valve come back to normal position and no oil feed to rams and hydraulic locking keep remain. That means rudder angle in desired angle. This is same like you carrying out emergency steering drill for electro hydraulic steering gear system from steering gear room. In non follow up system no feed back signal. As far as you are puting the joistic rudder will move. Once you release it keep rudder in that angle
@kapila75072 жыл бұрын
Follow up ,non follow up or auto pilot signal goes to solonoids of directional valves in hydraulic system in steering gear room
@DeepakJha-rf7jz2 жыл бұрын
@@bhageshkatoch2944 In NFU your solenoids are not working.But when you move your joystick to directions of port or stbd ,you operate the directional valve indirectly. Like for the duration you hold the joystick to port or stbd,for the same duration your directional valve of the chosen direction remains open and hydraulic oil goes to move the ram in that direction. Once you leave the joystick(i.e. joystick comes to its original state) your directional valve closes and there is hydraulic locking of rudder at that angle .The angle you yourself check at the angle indicator and leave joystick accordingly.
@jeyapaljohn69453 жыл бұрын
Actually,the feed back for the follow up mode of steering control is from a potentiometer which is located near the rudder stock and linked so that the turning movement of the stock is transferred to the potentiometer.This trans mitter has nothing to do with the rudder angle indication.For this purpose(indication) a synchro transmitter is used and fitted and linked same as the feed back potentiometer.Both transmitters have different function nothing in common.Narrative regarding NFU could have been better if described the need for using this mode and about control supply arrangement during this operation.Good effort but needs more improvement.
@SanjayYadav-qu1mf3 жыл бұрын
NFU things are not for engineers sir and we don't steer the ship. we just do the fault finding and rectify it and its the basic and from that we can understand that NFU's are for turning the ship instantaneously to hard port or hard starboard
