Quick revision. The GoPro sensor is actually natively a 4:3 aspect ratio so setting the camera to 16:9 is actually cropping the top/bottom of the video vs. the other way around like I said in the video. If you want as much FOV as possible, set the camera to 4:3 and crop to 16:9 in post-production. That will give you the most control over your footage!
@simonwyndham3 жыл бұрын
On the other hand, in 16:9 modes (not including Superview mode) you get a wider FOV with HyperSmooth on.

Arguably one of the most in depth videos on the go pro platform. I understand basic video settings and even your manual settings on standard cameras, but still watched this entire video due to the quality and delivery of the explanations. Awesome stuff :) Going to dive into the ND filter video now which is the reason I came here in the first place.

@simonwyndham3 жыл бұрын
Comprehensive video, though a few points I would consider. Manual shutter speeds have a major effect on HyperSmooth, which needs high shutter speeds to work effectively. This is why I never personally use ND filters. Motion blur can be dialled in easily afterwards in Resolve or Premiere if required. Another reason I never use ND filters is that none of the after market ones are rated for use in water, since they aren't sealed like the official GoPro lens protector. Also with regards to the HERO10, if you're using the camera in and around water, the new hydrophobic coating on the HERO10 lens protector is invaluable and works exceptionally well. You lose this by using an ND filter. ISO, hmm, I think ISO6400 is way too high personally. The official GoPro recommendation is 1600, but I usually cap it at 800. One thing you didn't cover was image sharpness settings, which I would always recommend having as set to low to give both a much more natural image, and also to reduce stress on the recording codec. With the new camera, Natural is the best colour setting IMO. I think a lot of people get too attached to 'flat' settings, when with an 8-bit highly compressed image you really want to be maximising tonal range. As far as I am aware, the flat setting on the GoPro is not a log function, and so you aren't really gaining any more dynamic range than you do with the Natural profile. In the past I would use the flat function because previous GoPros had a tendency to clip highly saturated colour channels such as red or blue more easily in the GoPro colour setting. However the HERO10 has no such issues, particularly in the Natural setting. IMIO flat is just making extra work whilst reducing the tonal resolution in an 8-bit recording codec. I find that the H10 errs on the side of over exposure most of the time, so I tend to always have between -0.5 and -1 EV dialled in, particularly to protect skin highlights, although as with everything, it depends on circumstance.
@ktm252533 жыл бұрын
I agree especially about the max ISO. I've seen an unacceptable level of noise at the higher ISOs with this, my first GoPro.
@forestchaput3 жыл бұрын
Oh for sure! ISO 6400 is way too high on a GoPro. The problem is, sometimes you don't have a choice. You either raise the ISO or record footage that's too dark. I would prefer properly exposed footage that's noisy over vastly underexposed footage any day.
@simonwyndham3 жыл бұрын
@@forestchaput It depends. I can't think of many circumstances where ISO6400 would be required. If it's that dark you probably want to be adding extra light. Some rare circumstances such as documentary with covert cameras might require it, but otherwise I'd be looking at providing extra light. Even when using large cameras the circumstances where I've needed to use hugely high ISOs have been rare, even when filming documentaries. When I used to use the 2/3" ENG cameras back in the early/mid 2000's we generally only ever went up to +9db of gain. The cameras could go to +18, but it was generally deemed last resort. Even +9 pushed it for noise on those older cameras. But it was rare that it was required. So I think the obsession with low light performance these days isn't strictly necessary. Although I fully understand that my own experiences don't cover everyone else's use cases. In the specific case of the GoPro, this video has some excellent suggestions with regard to low light filming, sometimes flying in the face of what you might logically be tempted to do. for example dialling in -2EV in low light to force a slower shutter speed rather than tempting the camera to increase the ISO, which it will generally do as a first resort (effect on HyperSmooth accepted). kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4nWmYWwnNSGh6c
@ktm252533 жыл бұрын
@@simonwyndham "If it's that dark you probably want to be adding extra light." That's rather a silly comment, isn't it? If it was possible to add light whenever, we'd all be happy with ISO 16 or so. With today's noise correction programs such as that from Topaz Labs, I"d rather accept noise over clipped details. I agree with your initial point that setting the ISO to 6400 by default is asking for trouble but it's not a forbidden setting.
@simonwyndham3 жыл бұрын
@@ktm25253 Paul, it isn't really a silly point at all. It is always possible to add light if it is *really* that important to get the shot. Powerful bike lights are easy to get now as are GoPro video lights for selfie Vlog style shots. But a fundamental question to ask is "Do I want to be filming in these less than ideal conditions?". Unlike a documentary where you absolutely must get the shot at that time because it may be fundamentally important, and therefore lack of image quality is secondary, if you are mountain biking, then unless it is documenting an epic trip across the Andes or something, you get to choose when you are biking and when you are filming. But generally if you are needing ISO levels as high as 6400, then the light will be no good. Is it really important that filming be done then? Would it be better with powerful bike lights to help things? You might think this is silly, but it's a decision making process we've had to go through using much older, and much less capable cameras than even a modern GoPro. You might think it silly, and that's your perogative. It's simply just advice, take it or leave it, no need for defensive insults.
