How many volts is the stator supposed to put out cause my voltage regulator went up in flames and idk if that’s what cause it or not idk anything about working on four wheelers and the guy that had it before me just bypassed everything he could do I’m trying to fix everything

Big question why did they put a fill plug and a drain plug for the stator?

It's NOT a fill plug, it's the timing sight hole. When you're at TDC, a mark will line up with a (forgot, someone fill in) That is for cam timing, etc., then there are also timing advance marks, I believe. The plug on the bottom is def a drain hole. I think the manual tells you to drain water after going through water, ie.Streams, puddles, etc. Should always have a good gasket or sealant on the starter cover housing and replace the rope handle tightly, to keep water out.

What tools did you use to remove the flywheel bolt? Mine is seized up and the whole flywheel wants to turn when I’m trying to loosen it. The little heat above the flywheel, is that supposed to have any play?

Impact screwdriver was totally the ticket for those philips screws. NO other way to easily get them off without stripping the head.

No spark battery always dead. Stator charges the battery.

What year is this one? Just got a 500 thinking it’s a 98 was told it was a 97 ordered the new stator there were 3 wires going to the regulator you only showed 2. And the stator was way smaller.. please tell me there was a difference to the 98?

Late 90's / early 00's Polaris ATV's used multiple stators despite the part numbers Polaris lists for the fitments. For these years I recommend removing your original and comparing it closely to pictures on our website to determine the matching stator.

My 2001 sportsman 400 has been in storage since 2002 with 200 miles on it but I noticed if the battery is dead the machine will run but my lights flickering and give it throttle and everything goes dark and the machine begins to stall until you let off the throttle it will idle but light flicker . Is this normal ? I thought the pull start was Incase the battery died and you can ride home .

Yes, that is required to remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.

Usually an impact wrench will remove it, may have to jam the flywheel somehow. I don't know if Polaris recommends the "rope trick".

I have a 2004 can am 650 and my stator cover is getting flooded. Stators aren't supposed to have oil in them right?

Most motors do have a wet (oil filled) stator area. They share oil with the crankcase. I'm not very familiar with the Can Am 650 off the top of my head, but this is likely just fine.

On this system you can slightly adjust the pickup coil gap. You will need to rotate the crankshaft until the ignition trigger on the flywheel is located at the pickup coil. You can then loosen the screws mounting the pickup coil. Using a feeler gauge you can slightly adjust the gap and then tighten the coil back down. There should not be much variation here, it will likely run fine in any position of the pickup coil.

I’m lost with ideas for my daughters Polaris. It’s starts up great runs great for the first 10 mins then it slows down! Only when it gets hot. I had the stator tested. And they said it was fine. Any ideas?

Often ignition issues that show up when the motor is hot is due to failing source coil on the stator. If the stator was tested with the motor cold, it can be perfectly within spec. You need to test the stator resistance right when the problem develops, and compare the measurements to your cold numbers. If it's changing more than 10% or so, you likely have a stator failing with heat.

The Brown wire is a ground on all Polaris Sportsman 500's. I'm sorry I'm not sure what you mean that it turns on if it has a spark?

The kjunction box, would that be the ignition coil? I burnt a brown wire and don't know where it led out from. Tried to catch a look at the junction box but couldnt tell.

Hard to tell, there is quite a few Brown wires on a Sportsman 500. Brown is always ground on these. It could be from your ignition coil, or many other components.

Sounds like you may have a weak ignition system and charging system. Your service manual will detail stator and regulator tests. Based on the age, I would recommend replacing both!

You should absolutely torque to spec in your service manual to be safe. However I have installed many, many stators and generally torque them by feel.

I have just stuked with installing the ignition system of honda cd 90. I have disassemble every part of the engine and reassemble them after cleaning and applying lubricating oil on some parts.I am a self learner but now I have a trouble with installing ignition system. I set the statar and then I don't no hove set up wiring that are ahead on my proccess. I would be very much thankful for you to if you can help me to finish this work by giving me information that are required. I want to know how statar wires connect to the next component and what is that next component.then how the spark plug connect to the battery and what are the other component related to the ignition system that I want to be aware, such as mechanical breaker,coil .......I would be much oblidge if anyone can help me.!

Gus Pompa Sounds like a battery. With the older sportsmans that are older than a 04 they don't need electrical to run

On a Polaris 500, the next most likely cause of an ignition issue is definitely the CDI box. I would look at replacing it.

I have a 1997 polaris 300 xpress and I put a puller on the flywheel and can not get it off. Ive ruined a puller and ratchets and sockets trying to get it off. I was told I may have to really hammer on it. Any ideas?

It is probably very similar on the later Polaris 4 stroke motors, but I have not done the install on one of these, sorry can't tell you for sure.
