I would be a NP because if I became a BSN Nurse, I am more educated with the scope of Nursing practice. But still, PA sounds very similar. You can get any science health related degree for PA but for NP you got to have BSN.

My pre-reqs for community college nursing are: Anatomy & Physiology 1, College Algebra, an English course, and a pre-nursing course. Super simple. But then for the University of Maryland School of Nursing (where I'll transfer to) I also have to do (on top of those previous ones) are Nutrition, Chemisty 1 (but not intro), Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Human Growth and Development, Statistics, Psychology, Sociology, and Microbiology. I also have the electives and stuff, but yeah....

The ASN(ADN) program prereqs at my school: Anatomy/Physiology 1&2 Human Growth & Development Human Nutrition Microbiology Any type of Humanities course Composition (English) I General Psychology College Algebra
@mursetalk
@mursetalk 6 жыл бұрын
Most school prereqs are AP 1 & 2, Microbiology, algebra (however, I'm seeing more moving towards Pre-Cal math especially for BSN programs), English, Human growth and development. I think some BSN programs are looking at Chemistry as well. I've never needed it but I had already taken Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. If anything it helps for NP or PA school. Cool video but not really an insight to a difference of PA or NP. But I will say to anyone that comes across this, like what was stated, if you're into surgery then become a surgeon or rather a PA.(less debt and time and headaches). You won't get that necessarily as an NP. However, if you're into family medicine some med schools now offer a 3 year track instead of 4 years for family medicine. But again NP would be cheaper and less time and doesn't have to practice under a physician as one would if they were a PA. That is, if you live in a state that allows an NP to practice independently. Above all, as was stated in the video do your research on the programs. Try shadowing both NP and PA to help make your decision.
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse

Yeah you know the video we did live we talk about more of the NP aspect. I probably should've done the title more accurate. It seems that the BSN's are moving to Pre-Cal and Chem, but I don't think the ADN's are. I interviewed the other day for a job at an ADN program and they didn't require Chem or Pre-Cal

@starmajors753

The only prob here is a mixing of roles. You are comparing RNs with PAs which serve totally different roles. You should be discussing PAs and APRNs. Both can diagnose, treat, and prescribe. PAs have to work under the license of an MD. An APRN can, depending on the state, be completely independent. There by the APRN has more autonomy. You don’t have to be an RN anymore before becoming an APRN. Both jobs are great and you can go into specialties with both. The main thing is.... if want to be able to secure a job after your bachelors then go for your RN and then work towards your APRN. But if you already have a bunch of classes and it’s easier to satisfy your requirements for PA school then go for it. Personally I like knowing that if life takes a turn on me at least I already have a degree that can put me to work.

@@jerad4336 thank you because I have a bachelors in biology but if I must be honest I my stats are not competitive for pa school. I’ve been leaning towards an ABSN because I have all my prereqs. I feel I should just apply. I like that nursing is diverse in the aspect of different opportunities. Quite frankly I just am tired of wasting time. I graduated in 21’ and have been working low wage odd jobs. My gpa cumulative was 3.2 and I do not have as many patient care hours as most less than 1,000. I love science and A&P so I figure this may a good option for me to start with . Do you think I can excel if I don’t like dealing with fecal matter ? I know it’s apart of the job but is it realistic to go in other areas that doesn’t deal with bodily fluids

The nursing school I’m hoping to go to (while only a 2 year) requires a class just under pre-calculus for the math, a low college level English, and some arts/humanities for the credits. They also prefer that students have finished A&P one and two, which I have My grandmother and my dad are nurses and they have had their share of disrespect from hospital staff and patients alike just for being “lower on the totem pole” Edit: The school also requires a certification in CPR and encourages taking a phlebotomy certification corse

Most if not all Nursing schools now require at least one semester of chemistry( and some exposure to OChem). If you want to go on to be an NP....having a good amount of chem under your belt makes life easier. Also a lot of my classmates were weak in math. Since my "pre nursing" school life was engineering it wasn't a problem for me, but if you are not confident in calculations....take more math classes, it will help you in the long run.

Nursing school pre-requirements (ADN which leads to being a RN): TEAS test minimum 60 score (Fall) to 62 (Spring), Chem 101, Anatomy and Physiology 107. You also require a background check and a health assessment. You will also need insurance. You will need to attend a orientation. These are the requirements that I needed to start at EGCC! I begin January.

Lol I’m a second semester PA student and orgo was easier than gen chem for me. At least easier than gen chem 2. I even got an A in orgo 2 after not taking orgo 1 for 7 years. Also of course an RN won’t be given the same autonomy as a PA, a RN is a bachelors and a PA is a masters. But looking at an NP and a PA they are very similar, although not the same. Both sides have pros and cons to them. I also went to go follow him and I already am. :)

Any opinions on getting a BSN/RN and then working as an RN for several years, and then going to PA school? I’m a critical care paramedic and would need a bachelors for applying to PA school anyway... so my thought is why not?
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse
@CrosbyTheNomadNurse 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. So the BSN will be more demanding than say some basic Bachelors degree. Also after you get a BSN you will know the nursing language and ecosystem of nursing. So I would think NP would be an easier route. But, Kaynen Brown who is a youtuber is an ER nurse who is going to go to PA school. In the end it's personal preference but I think NP would be a more natural route. But, either way you really can't make a wrong choice with either

Most schools here in New Mexico have adopted a state-wide curriculum for the ADN, that currently requires English (x2), Psych (x2), Biology *or* Chemistry *or* Microbiology, A&P 1&2, Pathophysiology 1&2. I supplemented mine with Nutrition, Sociology, History, Public Speaking, Statistics, and Foreign language to hopefully facilitate getting my BSN, though now I'm finding Microbiology pretty consistent among requirements to get into an RN-to-BSN program.

It wasn't much of a decision in the end, since Biology was a pre-req for A&P and Patho. I do wish I'd had the foresight to take the other two when I was still a full-time student. Working nights as an RN, it's going to be rough trying to take Microbiology during the day!

kvxsten no most nurse practitioners were RNs for a while then they go to NP school. You cannot be a NP without first being a RN. @xckiana
@xckiana 4 жыл бұрын
ShogunG the only reason im “shooting lower” is because academically im not the smartest, especially in math. compared to other applicants that’d apply for med school/ PA school i know i wouldnt get in 🙃 (thats not the only reason; money for tuition and the amount of school plays a part too) and the field that i like is dermatology, which apparently is even harder to match into. it seems easier (still hard! but easier) to get into nursing school, so thats what im leaning towards, a dermatology nurse practitioner. i just need to do some more research on PA’s because i dont know much about them or how long it takes, etc.

@@xckiana I was the same way as you but once I learned the most efficient ways to study I ended up being top of my colleges in both undergrad and grad school.... PA and NP are the same thing realisticly. PA school is 4 years of college undergrad) then 2-3 years of grad school depending on the school. That is the same with NP but you'd have to be a nurse first and theyd want you to work for a few years before going to NP school You can be a dermatology PA and the thing about PA is you can switch from derm to ENT to urology whenever you want unlike most NPs who specialize

People: Cut the CRAP about this. Most FNP's have been nurses for years before their FNP, w/ first hand experience watching many MD's action w/ respect to patients. And PA's are basically brain dead, which is why their License only allows them to work for ever more - under MD supervision. Whereas a Nurse Practitioner's License allows them STAND-ALONE, primary provider ability, and do not need everlasting MD supervision in almost all professional settings. CASE CLOSED!
