Allow me to explain why this video has been re-edited. When creating the scripts for my complete history videos I tend to make them way longer than they need to be and therefor from time to time big chunks get removed. One of those big chunks was talking about the 3DO port of the original game in more detail (17:17) After getting quite a bit of constructive feedback I felt that it was best to add it back in and re-upload the video as sort of a DIRECTORS CUT! The original video can still be found here... kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaWzY6eGmrJ0sKc ...but other than that 1 section and the odd tiny bit of clean up its pretty much exactly the same video. Thanks for understanding guys, hope you like the new video, hope you are all having a great weekend aaaaaaaand hopefully I will see you all next time! Mucho Love -DJ Slope

I would say that EA's habit of buying up smaller companies and then either shutting them down or leaving them stagnant until they die of starvation is a huge part of what makes them a terribly hated company. Don't give them any slack. They do not deserve it anymore.

I actually discovered this series about 10 years ago by accident when I was staying at my great aunt's house, and one of the bedrooms had an old Genesis in it with a few games, Road Rash 2 being one of them. I didn't sleep that night, cause this game took over my life. lol Funny enough, that was also my first real introduction to the first Sonic the Hedgehog game, so all in all, a very eventful night for me, but Road Rash especially stuck out to me, and I've been slowly tracking down different games from the series ever since.

The N64 version, with the rocket bikes and everything, was a source of face-destroying laughter between me and my best friend growing up. We're in our late 20's now and still can't keep from busting out laughing long enough to finish a race. XD
@Kos4Evr

It's worth mentioning the AI in the genesis games. There are 3 main types of riders on the track with you. You have racers which are more focused on racing than brawling, brawlers who are more interested in smashing skulls than the actual race and there is Natasha. Natasha is different because she is there to teach you about the game. As such she will not attack you, unless you attack her first. Once provoked she will literally try to kill you. I loved the road rash games up until road rash 3D. Easily one of my favorite video game trilogies. Also worth mentioning that the genesis games had side mirrors to see behind you which the CD versions all lacked.

Man, Jailbreak was my favorite racing game ever when i was a kid, i remember playing the hell out of it with my cousin and just laughing out loud at everything. Also the slurs that the bikers screamed were so dumb and funny, the freaking jumping on cars was fun, the music was awesome, the glitches were hilarious, the fighting i thought was very satisfying, the co-op was so weird and creative, etc. I mean, i agree with all the problems about the game, but when you're a kid that stuff it's not a big deal, if anything the problems made the game more fun to me. Jailbreak never really didn't dissapointed me, i loved it. Great video!

I too had fond memories of Jailbreak, I never had the previous (the 1st,) Road Rash 3D on PSX/PS2, but played most or earlier Mega-Drive and Amiga 500M+ Road Rashes. I did like the co-controlled sidecar, which remaniscant of an earlier Amiga Sidecar Racer game. (which for its time had a custom track creator, I think it utilising a password/key track layout encoding & recreating-code, if not a save to storage.)

Road rash 2 is in my top 10 games of all time. When I was younger, (well past the Genesis' prime) my parents would take me to Gamestop and let me pick out a game from the clearance bin. Even though the first consoles I owned as a kid were the game boy and the ps1, I would play games on my older cousins' Genesis every time I went to their house and convinced my parents to buy me one, after which it quickly became my favorite console ever. I saw road rash 2 in the bin and thought it was a cool name, so I bought it, probably for 4-5 dollars and put it in my Genesis. I didn't take it out for almost 6 months. All the different bikes, the combat and how smooth the racing was, it was too much for my child brain to handle. Never played the other games but that one has a big spot in my heart.

There was a version of Road Rash in development in 2006 for the 360, PS3, and PSP. EA NW (based in Warrington) were working on the 360/PS3 versions, while Criterion were working on the PSP version. Sean Murray (from No Man's Sky infamy) apparently worked on the PSP version, and has mentioned it briefly in the past. The 360/PS3 version never got out of the Alpha stage, but was built using a modified version of the Burnout Revenge engine. Sadly, it was ultimately canned when EA NW was shut down (in typical EA fashion) during Summer of 2006.

This is actually a great timing to ask question about other ''drive and beat up others'' game - Twisted Metal. Have you thought or moved forward with it's history from last time we talked? So far, no Twister Metal complete history still on KZbin. Once again, I think you would receive a massive interest to your channel with that, as there are no complete history for such a amazing game still. Anyway, absolutely love your channel and videos. Twas early '93 when a friend brought Road Rash to my house resulting in one of the best Gaming nights with the Megadrive I had! Absolute Wow. From the second the Megadrive's soundchip BLASTED that classic Hard Rocking theme, I loved it. Cheering, whooping, rocking out to the initial wobbly wonderings on the road, by the third stage, I was heading out to the Highway to Hell, kicking anyones Ass in my way. I was in Awe of the music- "Redwood Forest" , "Pacific Highway" are some of my all time favourite chiptunes. The sequel is equally great, and though its got some extra additions, the level layout looks too familiar. Desert plains and Green country roads. I remember Mean Machines magazine (which I got Religiously) said that, yes RR2 is great but looks and feels too much like the first. When yer 13/14 at the time, I didnt think about that though.😂😂 I was too busy loving the fact that you could wallop the Police now.😂

Road Rash is special to me as a gamer, I sold my NES in 1991 when I saw this game at my friend's house. I haven't played anything at home that looked sounded and felt as good as the original Road Rash at that time. The game made you feel like you were in the race and actually had a relationship with the other bikers. I finished Road Rash after almost a year of playing it, it's one of the hardest games I have ever finished. I got lucky in one race in level 5, the opponent bikers all hit a 🐄 and I was able to squeeze a second place. Road Rash 2 is the polished version of Road Rash 1. Road Rash 3 graphics bothered me, so I skipped playing it. Road Rash PS1 is awesome, but after that Road Rash just kinda faded... Speed Kings on PS2 & boX is the closest thing to Road Rash 132 bit

road rash 64 is the best road rash. 4 player multiplayer automatically puts it over the rest since playing with your friends is a HUGE plus. And then you add in that it has way more combat than the others since the enemies stick around your character much more so you have a lot more combat focused game which is what the series is known for and this one does it best. And then you throw in the 3d graphics and world which makes it feel like you are actually progressing on the track rather than just moving along an infinite loop like the genesis ones feel.

The digitized soundtracks for the genesis trilogy stick with me to this day. Hell, just hearing some of them in this video transports my mind back to the mid 90's, playing our genesis on that old wooden TV set in the basement. Also, every time I hear "Magic Man" by heart (or is it barracuda? I don't know they are all awesome), something in that track reminds me massively of the road rash soundtrack and I love it.

I've played Vette! Was quite fun, huge San Francisco map, running people over, police chases, taking any route you want to the finish. They could probably remake it. Road Rash is one of my favourite series of games. It's fun because you could be the cops in Jail Break.

I disagree on the point of EA. Once upon a Time they were great, but now they are rather crap and consistently so. I'm greatful for their historical contribution to the industry, but beyond that I have little love for a company that sorely treats it's customers and the people who work for them. Good video though.

Modern EA want to give children gambling addictions, but original EA which was made up of almost entirely different people, were an awesome company who published great games. The old company and the new company might share the same name, but they're chalk and cheese levels of different

Back in 2008 I took over the old EA offices that were in Warrington. Whilst I was sorting out the false floor for the LAN network I found a DVD-R with Road Rash written across it. I put it in a safe place, that I have now since forgotten about. I wish I'd checked that DVD out a bit better.

Just wrapped up a night of listening to two friends explain the Ultimate team mode in this year's (but not a year's worth of work)FIFA. Basically by the time the conversation was over, I was more pissed off at E.A. than I normally am (and more pissed off than both friends......and I haven't touched the series in a long time). The only antidote to moods as incendiary as this one, is to quickly and calmly go watch the South Park episode involving College Basketball and E.A. (....and some crack, maybe a baby or two 🤔), which I am administering immediately. This is the other side of loving video games : you can't stand to see the form of art that has so captivated, nourished, inspired and ultimately contributed to the person you are - to see any harm or exploit come to it sets of a nerve, boils the blood. That's love for you though 😬😐😒

When I was a kid, I didn't get to play Road Rash because I had a Nintendo/Super Nintendo at the time they came out. I can see the appeal it had because I like auto combat games like Carmageddon 2 and Mario Kart. Well done on another brilliant episode DJ Slopes. 🤘

I first got to know about Road Rash II when I seen it on the cover of EGM Dec. 1992 issue, the first of which I got in the mail. It had a foil holographic pic on it. I eventually tried RRII and I was hooked! Went back to try the first game and it was fun all things considered. Since then I have been a fan of the series and really want a true follow up on the modern platforms. Criterion should totally do it. I have tried Road Rage and I don't think it's THAT bad but it certainly wouldn't live up to it's spiritual predecessor. R.I.P. Chris Cornell...

A cool addition that RR3 added was the ability to carry more than 1 weapon at a time, as well as keep your weapons between races. I was a little disappointed that you didn't cover the Game Boy or Game Gear ports of the original, but overall I loved the video. Your "complete history" series is always top notch.

Aaaah this vid is bringing back memories. I remember having Road Rash 3 back in the day and using that cheat for that overpowered broken as hell Superbike. Then later I remember getting Road Rash for either the Saturn or PlayStation and seeing that awesome (yet pixelated) live-action intro with that badass Soundgarden song “Rusty Cage”.

Holy shit, the 3DO version had music by Soundgarden, Therapy? and Monster Magnet. Sign me up. Better than the soundalike of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” drums on Road Rash II.

Great video and a nice summary of the series. You just earned yourself a new subscriber. Your gaming history is suprisingly similar to mine, though the main games I loved to play back in the day on my megadrive, next to super hang on, the Road Rash series and the Strike Series(Desert-, Jungle- and Urbanstrike) were Rings of Power and Starflight. I still own all of my games from back then together with the notes my mother and I took back when playing these(you had to basically take notes because neither of these had any internal Logbook feature that would keep track of stuff to do).

My favourite is Road Rash 3D on PS1 though I do like the older ones a lot too. I like the feeling of going on a journey you get from them that I don't get from most other games. I think it's because they don't have laps and are more like rally games.

Edit: I am an idiot I don't see anyone else talking about it and this vid is super old so maybe it hadn't come out yet: ROAD REDEMPTION is a true current gen road rash, but with an expanded arsenal comprised of shotguns, Uzi's, machetes, Swords, and more. The driving is satisfying and fun, the combat is amazing (you get a bonus for decapitation) and there's an entire rogue like story campaign with a permanent skill tree and unlockable racers. I've poured hours into it and recommend it to EVERYONE.
