Thanks for posting this. I was part of the crew that went out to do the geo work on the abutments for the bridge repairs when they fixed the road, and it shows the damage in the area well. Amazing what 9 inches of rain in 45 minutes on a burn scar can do. I need to dig out my old video and post it. Most definitely not a fun road when the morning ice hasn't got sunlight on it yet.

I used to drive this road with a loaded 4-horse trailer behind my pickup. I prayed not to meet up with anyone coming down hill, but usually did, like the crazy postman Not much room for backing up, but after those first curves and cliffs you have it made.

We used to go here often when i was a kid (my dad grew up by there) and I was telling my husband about this crazy road. I think he thought that I was exaggerating. I can't wait to show him this! Thanks for posting it.

1/31/2021. We had no idea that this road was so narrow and had many blind curves. We hit some light ice patches in the shaded areas early morning. If feels like a single lane road. You just hope that no one needs to pass you. No guard rails or boulders on the edge of the road. Big steep terrain next to you mainly when you travel down the mountain. Luckily we were able to follow the water truck down the mountain who paved the road for us. Not looking forward to drive this road again. Views are spectaculair !!

Been a while, before the flood, since I drove that road. Not much changed on the mountain. The valley is a textbook example of flash flood erosion. Fortunately the town was not washed away even though to road was relocated. For folks that have not driven mountain gravel roads please not the 10 and 15 mph signs are not just advisory. They are a good idea on the switchbacks. Just take you time and stay away from the edges. The uphill edge could catch a wheel and trap your car/SUV. The down hill edge could require flying lessons. Stop every once in a while and admire the view. Stop every once in a while to stop shaking. At one point in our drive all I could see in the windshield was an Eagle. Magnificent. If you really want a neat road continue east past the gate into the Gilla forrest. I have not done that yet. Maybe next time.

Perfect video for what I am looking for. I plan on making this trip in the summer of 2021. I see that the road is super skinny in some places. I also noticed that there were no cars coming at you(unless I missed something). Having done this, would you be totally confident to do it again if it was your first time? Did you spend much time in the town itself? If so, how were the people there if there were any you came into contact with. Sorry if these are silly questions.

Sorry, just seeing this. Having a place in Mogollon I've been up and down that road I don't how many times. The road isn't bad really as there are places where you can get over to the side when needed for oncoming traffic. The people in town are great just don't go on to other's private property, have some respect.

Lol! I had a panic attack when it went to one lane and gingerly reversed until I could turn around and head back down the mountain. That was the stuff of nightmares for me. Dang it bc I really wanna see the town

QUESTION: Since the 'Museum' was shown on the right, based upon the Google map, it looks like this drive took route 159 from the west, correct? Unless that road has gotten worse, it also looks like it could be easily driven by a compact car such as my Honda FIT. If anyone heads up that way this Spring, let me know the road conditions. I love driving on roads like that although I don't have my Isuzu 4WD Trooper anymore.

Road videos like this are great, but "default" should be to list !) the elevation, and 2) time of year being driven. I had to go to the comments to find out the other variables. It's like all those Colorado mining visits to old towns...........then you realize you're ABoVE 10 thousand feet, so that green grass and beautiful warm day is two months of the year, with ten months of sled.

They need to put up road gard rails on this road so people do not go off the road.
@Allen_Thayer

It's only happened once that I know of and they were both drunk and didn't get hurt. The reason for no guard rails is so that it can be plowed clear of snow. If there were guard rails the couldn't push the snow off.
