When I was little I couldn't memorize the word Fachwerkhäuser, so I always said "Guck, die karierten Häuser!" (Look, the checkered houses) when we visited our family in Hessen. They still tease me with it today

Beautiful video! I love seeing the German towns, it reminds me of the road trip my family took through Germany, Switzerland, and Italy when I was a child. Last year, my husband and our pup took a road trip across 12 US states - Arches National Park and the Rockies were my favorite sites.

Hello! You might be interested in this: The Pader is the shortest river in Germany. It has several hundred springs, right arround that area where you have been. Actualy there is a bronze figure at every spring in Paderborn. It has two arms, the "cold" and the "warm" pader. The "warm" pader is not really warm, but 1 degree C warmer than the cold pader. Have fun! One tip for your roadtrip: the "Westfalische Landesmuseum" in Detmold. There are several villages in different styles of half-timbered houses. These houses have been brought there, whenever they would have been destroyed otherwise, eg for a building an airport or something like that. Greetings, have fun.

The "warme Pader" in Paderborn is named like this, because it is about 2-3 Degrees warmer then the other arms of the river. Btw: Did you know, its the shortest river in Germany?

I have made several road trips in Germany BUT only thanks to this video I learnt that there are these interesting rocks in the Teuteburger Wald (shame on me, thanks to you). I love driving around in Germany (it is much more beautiful than people think). My favourites: Oberbayern (upper-Bavaria) close to the alps, the Rheinland along the river rhine or driving through the blackforest to the Bodensee - beautiful.

Awwww you went to Aschaffenburg! Its the area I grew up in and Aschaffenburg is home to me. My Dad and I sometimes do smaller roadtrips to cities nearby that we havent been to yet and just do some classic exploring. The best kind of exploring has happened in the south of switzerland/north of italy where we went on vacation on a regular basis when i was little. Lots of road trips and exploring and the area is just so beautiful. I remember secret bamboo gardens and giant rock monuments and ppl jumping off a stone age old bridge into a mountain spring kind of river. Oh man now I wanna go back!

Oh my god ;_; It's so nice to see you guys visit my home and liking it so much! While I'm not from Paderborn itself, I used to live in Kreis Paderborn as a child, so the city and all the sights like the Externsteine or Hermannsdenkmal are super-nostalgic for me. If you're in Paderborn again, try the authentic Paderborner Landbrot. What they sell in plastic backs in shops elsewhere in Germany is pretty gross and nothing like the real thing! Pickert is also a classic food from the Region, especially famous in Lippe.

Hey Dana and Mr. German Man, thank you for the nice video! I enjoyed it very much. You can see so much beatiful landscape, rivers, mountains and villages when you take the time and travel on the landstraße. One typical food of Paderborn or Westphalia in general is Kartoffelpuffer, I think :) I also made a road trip together with my wife from the western border of germany to the eastern border. We drove the Bundesstraße 1. Starting in Aachen we passed Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Soest, the Externsteine, Hameln, Brunswick, Magdeburg, Brandenburg and Berlin. We also saw the beatiful Fachwerkhäuser and other sights like an old steel works, an abbey, churches and castles. The last destination was Küstrin (Kostrzyn) in Poland.

Special food of Eastern Westphalia: - Pickert, a specal kind of pan cake (made with potatoes) eaten with Rübenkraut (eat it!) or Leberwurst (don't eat it!). You really get it in this area only. - Steinhäger (a spirit with juniper) comes from Steinhagen near Bielefeld - Dr. Oetker pudding and pizza (made in Bielefeld :D ) - Werther's Original (candy made by Storck in Halle near Bielefeld. Werther is nearby, too. Ok, last two are jokes....

Yay! You visited the Externsteine! I actually live in that area. Those rocks are an ancient religious site - many different cults have used them over the millenia. People have visited the Stones since around 10,000 b. Chr., so they have a really long history. I'm pretty fascinated by archaeology, so I'm really excited that I live somewhat close to such an important site. :D

If you like Fachwerkhäuser, Dana, you really should visit the Harz mountains and the villages and towns there. There's loads of old houses there. In Quedlinburg for example there's a building built without the use of metal! It's just that old. Also, the open air theatre in Thale is real nice, as it's right on the mountain. So you sit and look down the mountain at the plays.

Heilige...those döner's were huuuuge! I trust they were better than the ones usually found at the street carts. When I was in country in 2009, I took a side trip to Illesheim where my mothers husband was stationed before he was deployed to Viet Nam. Quaint little town where I took a bunch of photos. Apparently the town hasn't changed much in the 39 years since he'd been there. I got a kick out of their little "Feuerwehr haus." I could just imagine everyone running to fetch water buckets as that's about all the building looked like it could hold. Oh and Mr. German Mann is completely spot on about swans. Not only are they mean, they're actually fairly dangerous.

Awesome tour!! I never heard about your final destination in this video before, and I'll have to weave that into my travels the next time I'm in that part of the country. How did you decide on Aschaffenburg and Paderborn??? They are both places of significance for me. I have childhood friends in the Aschaffenburg area who played a pivotal role in my decision to move to Germany, so I have spent lots of time there. My first job after college was in the States, but the company's headquarters was in Paderborn, so I was there a number of times on business, with my longest stay being ten weeks. Can't wait to see more of your travel videos 😃👍

Dana, next time you visit the States, you should see if you can squeeze in a trip to Mesa Verde (southwest Colorado) to see these amazing ancient cliff dwellings. And Four Corners isn't too far from there either. Just a couple suggestions. Cheers! -Phill, Las Vegas

You missed Bartholomew Chapel in Paderborn - small, but architectural unique and with a special acoustic. And quite old, built in 1017. Fun fact: The River Pader is the shortest river in Germany.

Nice, you have been to Paderborn. I was living there for a couple of years. How did you like the city? You should visit the Externsteine during the Sommersonnenwende, quite a few people there during that time. :D

We love to go on roadtrips along the Rhinevalley, it is very beautiful. Very near to where I live is the only rebuilt Romian Castel in the world (among other things), which might interest you. :) It was rebuilt by our Kaiser Wilhelm. ;)
