Just drove from San Diego, CA to Raleigh, NC. 3,000 miles. Best thing is music, stopping to eat in different states and watching the scenery change from desert to farmland to woodlands.

On long road trips I like to listen to audio books or "Hörspiele", especially when I'm driving alone. It's soothing and just the right amount of information density to conveniently concentrate on driving. Sometimes the radios night program offers this as well. When I'm co-driver and we're not having a conversation, I usually just gaze out the window and take in the scenery.

I recently went to Schleswig-Holstein (the nothernmost German state) for a vacation and we were stuck in traffic in Hamburg for 3 hours on the way home (Baden-Württemberg). So during those 13 hours on the Autobahn I found not being a passenger but actually *driving* to be a good way to keep myself busy. I love Germany's north for its open countryside and its architecture, but the weather is just not my cup of tea. :)

I've done a few road trips. My husband and I went on one in 2011. We live in Florida but we were going to a wedding in Detroit so we basically did a loop around the Eastern United States and listened to the satellite radio. I've looked on my phone, taken pictures, enjoyed the view, etc. West Virginia is very beautiful too. When I lived in Germany, we took a spontaneous trip to Trier (I lived in Baumholder at the time) and it wasn't well planned. My daddy almost got us stuck in a side street with our van....lol. All in all, I've had enjoyable road trips.

Last weekend some friends and I drove from Munich to Oldenburg, almost 800 km or 500 miles, which is nearly the same trip as you took. Including traffic jam, it took us more than 10 hours. We entertained ourselves by solving puzzles (one of us thinks of a person, an object, a book, a movie and gives more and more hints until another one hits the right guess). Another game is called "Sekt or Selters" (Champagne or Soda). You offer an alternative (hot or cold, tea or coffee, etc.) and the other ones have to chose their preferred option and provide a short statement why they prefer this one. That's a nice communation game where you get to know each other a little better. (+ there's no winner or loser.)But the best way to stand such a long drive is to stay relaxed and just joke around.

Have you ever been to Fehmarn?? It's a beautiful Island of the coast of Germany with lots of little villages. The biggest town there is Burg. You can also catch the train from the Seaport called Puttgarten and you can then travel to Denmark via the train, which also drives onto the ferry. I did a day trip to Kopenhagen before heading back to Fehmarn :)

On road trips we like to listen to our favorite songs on max volume so that we can't hear our own bad singing :) Also we like to read out loud stories or read historical facts about the region we are in. Otherwise we keep talking about stuff... for example, we talk about your videos. :)

I'm Danish with German family and my boyfriend is German, but we've only really seen the parts of Germany where we've got family + Berlin and Hamburg (of course); so having a good idea as to which cities to see (and it which order) would be awesome! Keep all the great videos coming! :D

It's fascinating: I saw you were somewhere in northern Germany before you even said it. The architecture is pretty characteristic. What you can do in the car: Look for the letters on license plates and try to come up with someone (celebrity or personal acquaintance) who has these as initials before the other people in the car do.

Hi Dana, your clips are getting better and better, especially since you decided to involve Mr German Man - you two have a great chemistry going on, which is really fun to watch! Especially in this clip I was delighted to see that someone could consider the region where I grew up as beautiful or special, I mean, for me it was just normal in my youth, no big deal at all. Thanks for letting me re-discover this landscape with american eyes :-) Did I get this right: you have a "Wanted an Adventure"-Sticker on the back of your car?

Dear Dana, just to mention this unique occasion: A band called THE DUKES FROM HAMBURG from Bielefeld, which is actually a colaboration of German (Bielefeldian) and US musicians, is playing Munich on Friday, December 8th 2017, at the Milla Club. If there should be any doubt about Bielefeld, go there and ask the Duke's. :-) Regards Andreas facebook.com/pg/DukesofHamburg/about/?ref=page_internal

Hey Dana, again: great clip!! On long drives, especially when I'm driving, I like playing some mind-games. My favorites are the "A to Z game" and the "who am I game", because as a driver I don't have to take my eyes from the road. rules A-Z game: you agree on a topic, such as food, animals, film-titles, actors, games, -- basically anything you want. let's take fruits: and then try to find words from A to Z. whoever can't think of a word looses (or looses a point, whatever...) I know, this game exists with the rule to start your next word with the last letter of the prior... but this is really frustrating and finishes early, because e.g. in German most fruits end with an E... Audiobooks are nice as well, but the driver might get tired more easily (I do, when I hear them... it's like bedtime stories) If you are planning another big vacation outside Germany, I suggest Greece. Very cheap atm, and still as beautiful as ever, and the food is the BEST ;)

Thank you for sharing your road trip it was so beautiful! And perhaps it's an American thing but I agree those houses are just so cute! When we travel we love listening to books on tape or reading aloud. Our favorite is fiction we've done the chronicles of Narnia, Altas Shrugged, and most recently a light mystery, The Death of a Liturgist.

By the way, I can absolutely recommend trying to make such road trips in a battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) such as a Nissan Leaf, Renault Zoe or something like that. So much more calm and relaxing and less exhausting. (That is, if you follow the right rules for when and where to charge, but that's simple after a few tries.)

My sister and I were counting horses on long road trips. We both liked them, and you didn't see as many as, for example, cows. To make things easier, I eventually came up with a counting system, that allowed me to 1023 with my fingers (and even higher, if we used 4 hands). We never really used all our fingers, I think. Only if we were like continuing to count throughout our vacation. Funny Thing: I later learned that our counting method was actually the binary system in a way. ( I started using the left hand little finger as 1, the next was worth 2, the one after 4 and so on) Yeah, it was fun, as Long as we got along well during the trips.

Even though I hope for a Meet&Greet here in Munich (after the Octoberfest-fueled September) - you should consider a roadtrip through the Eastern part of Germany next year - in several villages and towns the time seems to be frozen for 30 or more years now (however the eastern states of Germany have beautiful spas (e.g. Bad Wilsnack or several on Usedom) and interesting historic spots (like the so-called Swedish exclave in Lützen, Saxony-Anhalt)

Tolles Video Dana!

My friends and I developed a game for movie buffs. We either start with a movie title or actor and then try to find a link between them and what the next player adds to the list. e.g. (Start) Saving Private Ryan - (2. Player) Nathan Fillion - (3. Player) Gina Torres, aso. Or (Start) Matt Damon - (2. Player) Oceans Eleven - (3. Player) From Dusk till Dawn, aso. When you can't name the movie in which the to actors played together or the actor who played in both movies, you have lost and can start a new chain. Usually every player has 3 lives. In this aso means "and so on" and not "ach so". ;)
