Tuomas sings backing on the AURI album. He has a perfectly pleasant singing voice, but he's no lead singer, as he'd be the first to admit.

That they were, Terrible. But how much fun was it to see those early day video's where even that Fat boy sang with Tarja. It was tgat Pharaoh's song back when time was invented. If memory serves correctly.
@franshinlopen21664 жыл бұрын
I do not think of Marko as the third backup singer. As I vaguely remember their first album Angels Fall First, Tuomas did some backing vocals that sounded flat to me, and he never did them again. Remember, they were a young band with no money. Tapio was never a backup singer. He was a primary vocalist on "The Devil ...." and "The Pharaoh Sails to Orion". Hiring Marko was one of the best decisions the band ever made. Marko is a trained guitarist/singer who also played bass. Sometimes he did backing vocals, sometimes he was the primary vocalist, and sometimes he was the equal in a duet.

I have always wondered about the fact he calls him Mammon in the song. One hand it's the name of a demon prince (or some high ranking one) On the other, it's close to the spanish word "mamón" which means something like: idiot. Seeing as Tarja's husband is Argentinian it could be a bit of a double jab
@TankTheTech4 жыл бұрын
Good shout. I don't think you're far off with either of those assumptions.
@eddiewinehosen66654 жыл бұрын
Mammon is also referring to money. You can't serve God and Mammon at the same time refers to monks and nuns giving their vows of poverty to not have earthly possessions distracting them from serving God. So I would assume this is what Toumas is referring to despite him not being religious. The guy (Tarja's husband) always trying to get more money from the pie instead of serving the art is serving money before art (Mammon over God)
@chilai4 жыл бұрын
Argentinean here. We don´t use the word mamón, other spanish speakers use it. That being said, it wouldnt be too far fetched to think that Thuomas doesn´t know a lot about argentinean mannerisms and specific slang and just thought that it makes sense for us.
@olgahein43843 жыл бұрын
'Mammon' is actually wealth or richness, that was achieved by unrightful, illegal and/or immoral means and/or was used in the before mentioned manner. Thanks to the mentioning in the Bible ('You can't serve both masters, God and Mammon, at the same time) 'Mammon' became the demonized personification of unrightful wealth and immoral use of money. Nowadays, Mammon is just a negative synonym of money in general, but again in a negative way.

This album was a masterpiece. Definitely in my top ten albums of any genre. To be completely honest, I think I enjoy the instrumental version of the album (or however they released the edition with the entire album as a second set of tracks with the vocal layers removed, iTunes represents those tracks as a second volume) more than the standard version of the album. With the vocals removed I appreciate the writing even more because every track is so stunningly well written from the ground up and can stand on its own without the need to have lyrics to give meaning or beauty.

The other thing about Marcelo (and this song is so about him), was he was Tarja's manager at the time (pretty sure he still is). There's a scene in the End of an Era DVD that for me, shows the split between Tarja and the band. They are doing an interview or talking in the scene, you've got them sitting in a semi-circle. Tuomas, Marco, Emppu and Marco are sitting on one side of the semi-circle, then there's Marcelo and then Tarja. It felt like the band had to go through Marcelo to get to Tarja.

Before someone judges me, I'm from Argentina too and I know we aren't all like that, but I can totally see the rumors being true. So true about the choice of finger/pick on bass. Watch MISA on Band Maid videos and live and while she is playing primarily with a pick, pretty much every song, somewhere she'll palm that pick like Harry Houdini and play slap or some songs just with fingers. For me it's as much about preference as it is the song. David Ellefson of Megadeth, uses a Pick. Marko. Jason Newsted. Many many more. The you have Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Miho from Lovebites, Rob Trujillo, Cliff Burton who destroy on the bass with fingers. For myself I prefer to play with fingers, but after having my dominant wrist rebuilt, I had to switch to a pick for endurance and pain management.
