Metallica is one reason why Tuomas started Nightwish. He was not a metal fan until he attended a concert in Kansas to see Guns and Roses and Metallica. He was studying as an exchange student at the time. Tomas has said " changed my life in many ways. I don't think I would be here without . Here it is in Tuomas' own words. "If I remember correctly, my first single would’ve been by Metallica. This was in 1992 when I was spending some time as an exchange student in Kansas for a year, and my host family took me to a Metallica and Guns N’ Roses concert. The two of them toured together for about a year I think, and I got to see them in Kansas City. There were 80,000 people in the city’s football stadium and it completely blew my mind. I didn’t know about Metallica back then. I was still all about classical, maybe a little bit of Gary Moore and Queen every now and then, but no heavy music at all. I only went because they’d been kind enough to buy me a ticket as a surprise - but when Metallica started playing it changed my life. It sounds romantic but that’s truly what happened. When I got home from that trip I went to the nearest record store and literally bought everything by Metallica that I could find, including the single. That song is still a perfect metal song to me. Everybody on the planet knows the riff, even if they’re not a metal fan, and I’m still not tired of hearing it." What was the first gig Tuomas ever went to? “That was it. I was 15 years old, and it was Metallica and Guns N’ Roses in Kansas City on September 23rd, 1992. It was a mind-blowing experience. I remember vividly the feeling I had when the host family told me about the concert: I was not excited at all. I was really happy playing my clarinet and piano because that’s what I knew, and I liked my Mozart. Heavy music did not appeal to me at all but the atmosphere of the 80,000 people once I got in the stadium, and the pyrotechnics and the fireworks at the end; wow! I became a metalhead over night. Guns N’ Roses didn’t really do the trick for me, as Metallica played first and I was so mentally drunk after seeing them that I couldn’t really focus. The first song Metallica played was The Shortest Straw, and from that moment on the next two hours were pure bliss. At that time James Hetfield had burnt his hand in a pyro accident and they had another guitarist, so he was only singing. But then for the very last encore he took the guitar and they did Enter Sandman. It was an incredible night in my life.”

I think Tuomas started NW first to make mood music (movie and chilling) and more softer stuff. With Emppu playing Acoustic guitar and Tarja singing operatic way. Those three had no drummer at all nor bass. LATER he decided to go to metal and specially symphonic melody metal way. Tuomas has said that he did not noted metal in the first place practically at all. As you write when he spent one exchange student year in US he joined Metallica concert and then came metal vibe for him. Check the Demo album....that is not metal for sure.

This is part of the "Tarja removal" trilogy, with "Bye Bye Beautiful" about Tarja and "The Poet and the Pendulum" about Tuomas depression. NW never was an angry band, this one is really the exception, he blamed Marcelo for having changed Tarja and also for his greed. I highly suggest to listen to Bye Bye Beautiful before TPATP, it's a good preparation, also both the open letters are interesting to be read, to better understanding.

My favorite line in this song is "To my everlasting shame, silence took me", which I *think* is Tuomas saying "I watched her being corrupted and said nothing because she loved him. I should have spoken out before she was too far gone, and I will live the rest of my life with this regret."

It's almost a must to also react to Ayreon. A project by our own maestro Arjen Lucassen . The Day that the World Breaks Down and / or Everybody Dies (live) are great. The man has worked with many many musicians including Marko Hietala (Nightwish), Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Bruce Dickinson (Iron maiden) and Irene Jansen (Floor's sister).

I think it is important to remember that Marcelo is Latin American, and the others are Finnish, and the cultural gap is so huge that they don't really understand where each other is coming from. Still, it seems like Marcelo sees business as a zero-sum game (if someone wins, the other side loses) and made a lot of enemies

If you read body language, and/or you're an empath, that documentary tells everything. Its hard to watch, but it speaks volumes. I didn't get on the Nightwish train until after Floor had joined - though I'd once had a copy of Wishmaster in my collection - but I'm invested enough in this band to feel the history and care about it deeply.

This song is a definition of an Angry song. I mean not short "pissed off" moment influenced by some unlucky unfortunate accident, but that deep, intense, hate-anger that can motivate to do things on a long distance run and make a man burn inside. This anger here is close to that "cold" or "ice-cold" hate state mentioned in books with that remark like "his stare turned ice" full of anger....

I'm like a year late to comment but first of all, great reaction!! I cannot go through this song without experiencing like forty-two different emotions... it grabs you by the throat and takes you for a ride because Tuomas (and Marco) poured EVERYTHING into it. Anger, rage, the almost mocking voice in the third verse, Marco's scream that is as much anger as pain, the dull sadness close to the end and then the freaking WAR HORNS. Also definitely agree with your interpretation of Tuomas' anger not being directed at Tarja herself but at her husband, and the pain of losing someone who used to be close. The "Hey Judas, your Christess was our love" always gets me because it is so raw ... Marcelo as Judas, not just being the antagonist but in this analogy betraying Tarja (and killing her; at least, a version of her) and then the essence of it which is like saying.. yeah, she is with you now but she was OUR love first. It's so raw I could cry. Especially the part with "Seek her, seduce her, tame her" almost feels like an absolution towards her, putting the entire blame and agenda on her husband. When I look at what Tarja has said or written about the situation, I empathise with her as much as I do with the rest of the band. I think she had very valid reasons for wanting to leave... in the end it was just an escalation of not having been able or willing to communicate between otherwise very decent people. Life sometimes be like that. It's heartbreaking, but at least now everyone seems to have found their happiness, and we got some beautiful music out of it, too.

I'd say Metallica and Pantera mashed together. On an angry day. lol. Welcome to a new episode of Therapy with Tuomas. Today we're gonna learn to express our anger. To let it all out. Yell everything you ever wanted to say to the person who hurt you the most, in a song. Yell it so loud that the instruments join you. Yell so loud that even the trumpet goes like: Yeah, fuck that bitch! Aaaahhhh, that feels better. :-)

"I think this is my new favorite Nightwish song." Even if you didn't say that, it's something I always hear ... Every time you put your ear to rest and listen to Nightwish again after listening to other bands or other genres, and you come back and you feel like they are outdoing themselves and sounding better That Last time, it's actually a feeling that comes from listening to a lot of other music, which although it's very good, doesn't handle feelings and lyrics at the level of Nightwish, and that set of things that sound so professionally, always seem to stand out. .. I think they actually maintain a stable level in everything they do ... No matter who sings, Anette, Marko, Tarja, Floor ... you always take something to bed with you. .. I'm not saying that Nightwish is the best band, but I'm sure it will be part of a small group of the most special that exist.

I do think Christess is Tarja ... it actually says very clear that what Marcelo pushing her to ask more money was killing the cooperation between them (killed the love between them, maybe Tuomas-Tarja or Tarja-rest of the band) For me there is a song where you can feel even harder the emotions within .... when Marco sings the chorus in "Bye Bye Beautiful" A good follow up for this song. A last final word to her, a final goodbye, and one as a screaming "Fuck you" to the sky.

There were a lot going on with Nightwish during the time Tarja was fired. Tarja's husband is certainly one of the players here, but it was not like he was the sole reason things went as they did. It was an ugly breakup and it was handled very publicly in the media... Even the Finnish political figures were asked about these events. But make no mistake, the relationships in the band were not that great when it all came crashing down. Marcelo may have been the one to blow down the house of cards, but it was shaky at best before "End of an Era"...

An "ode" to MArcelo, Tarja's husband and manager. He dictated everything. Not suporting her to tour in the USA, because there were not enough fans, small venues ( not very profitable) which goes straight into what NW is about: reaching all their fans and pretty cheap tickets. SHe also suddenly demanded her own tourbus and did not oin rehearsels anymore. Marcelo wanted her to go solo, and she threatened many times she would leave. They HATE and despice him a lot.

Who did the backing vocals? That would be Marko, Tuomas, and the Metro Voices Choir from London. That choir also works very closely with the London Symphony Orchestra, who you also heard on this track. In fact, both are prominent in that entire album, Dark Passion Play. Not to mention that some of this was recorded and mixed at Abbey Road, so you know they spent some money on this! As for the Metallica vibe you were getting? That's expected. Tuomas was studying Botany in the USA as a foreign exchange student in the mid 1990s. His friends a d host family took him to a Metallica show, and that's when he got bit by the music bug. So combine his learning of science, evolution (spoiler alert!), music, and love for classical music, and you get Nightwish... all because of being dragged out to a Metallica show.
