Audie Murphy(To Hell and Back) was a member of the 3rd Infantry Division. My dad was enlisted in this division in the 90s, and the chorus of the song is directly from a poem Audie had written before he died about his combat PTSD.

For this album Carolus Rex, because it's a Swedish band singing about Swedish history, the entire album was released in both English and Swedish. I had always thought this song was a direct translation for both versions, but I was wrong. The lyrics are completely different in both languages.

Yes the Swedish and English version of this song are very different. The English version is more of a general song about the Thirty Years' War and the crazy idea that someone could be born, grow up and die in the same war. Some of the songs are different. 1648 is another one that is completely different, the English version is from the point of view of the citizens of Prague while the Swedish version is from the point of view of the Swedish soldiers laying seige to Prague.

I did not know that the songs were not just translations. The lyrics of "Lifetime of War" are nowhere near as powerful as this, in my opinion. I'm an idiot when it comes to language, so I really can only appreciate the sound of non-English songs. Since the music is identical to "Lifetime of War", what I can get out of this without the captions is less than what I can get from the English version, and that is a huge disservice to beautiful songwriting.
@bertathegremlin
@bertathegremlin 4 жыл бұрын
@@HALberdier17, I have to confirm this. 1648 (in eng version) is my must-listen song if I need to be reminded to 'stand and fight' but the Sweedish version of lyrics makes me cry. I remember the first time, I saw a video with Swedish lyrics translated to English at one point I was just singing along the English version while sobbing. If the events in the songs influenced your history that much it's hard to not be emotional as was proved by Sabaton many times over.

This was such an epic moment. I was there, at scandinavium, and it was such an emotional song. They had hyped us up for Sabaton all night, with Amaranthe and Apocalyptica displaying amazing performances, and then finally, Sabaton comes with this. They told us to turn on our flashlights on the phones, which is all of the lights you see, and it was so impactful. Many people around me had a hard time singing along because they were too busy crying.

I took my son to see Sabaton in Vegas last year for his 13th birthday. They were in this little club called the Brooklyn Bowl. It was really incredible being a few feet away from them! I feel so fortunate that we were able to see them in such a small venue, considering the sizes of the arenas they sell out in Europe. But I agree that it would be an incredible experience to see them at one of those enormous arenas or at some huge festival. One thing that stuck out with how genuinely happy and humble they seemed. Joakim especially seemed so genuinely thrilled and appreciative to see this little venue packed full on a Sunday night in America… even though they play in front of tens of thousands in Europe. They seem like such nice guys. I wish I could post pictures in the comments and you could see how happy they looked.

Fun fact: I clicked onto this video by accident but it did not disappoint. I personally started crying when watching that live video. First of all it’s all kinds of amazing, second it made me miss touring so bad. I’ll never forget how the audience sang their hearts out in this! I was somewhere in the wings, behind the barricades and the amount of chills was ridiculous. I was part of the crew on this tour and it truly was massive. If i remember correctly the head count ( including support bands) was 124. We had 7 trucks, 5 busses (just for Sabaton & crew) plus 2 support busses. And yes, we did the whole tour with the set and production. We toured with 25 stagehands and them there was local crews to help too but mainly it was done by the own stagehands and other crew members. Every damn day i watched in awe to see the stage being build. Ridiculous and awesome! I hope we get back on the road soonish. Take care!

This is definitely one of their most emotional songs in their catalogue, especially compared to the English version "A Lifetime Of War". It's the same melody, but the lyrics don't hit you as much because it's from a neutral viewpoint of the 30 Years War, whereas En Livstid I Krig is from a view of a Swedish soldier. Next, you would have to see Uprising & 40:1 Live from Woodstock. If you think that crowd was great, wait until you see that insane Polish crowd at Woodstock. And please, get to Galneryus soon & check out Unlucky Morpheus after that.

My son are doing his military service right now, and the week before this weekend, they did their beret test, two days of marches (somewhere around 50-60 kilometres) with full gear, and with diverse checkpoints with strecher carrying "wounded". Up camp, down camp within hours, shooting tests, no food, wet uniform (the winter here got from arctic to rain an gales this week). But those who finished had a ceremony. In front of a large bonfire they were presented with their berets, and after performing soldaterindran (trans. soldiers oath), they sang the national anthem. And here comes the story: some guy played En livstid i krig and Carolus Rex afterwords, and the commander thought it was so good, that he intended to do this here after.

So, this is the first video that I watch on your channel. I've watched at least a dozen reaction videos of "En livstid i Krig" by now and your reaction is by far the best to date. I get goosebumps every time I watch this live performance! You got to have some sort of musicality tied to you. Being in a band, backstage personal, or any instrument playing knowledge. You intercept the small things like the "Talk-Back microphone" and ask us, the viewers if we know the answer to the question. I like the humble awareness. There are not that many people that would notice such a small thing like that. As a fellow musician, I bow to that. Collaboration is the best way of communication. I primarily watch outlandish KZbinrs reacting to this song. Since I'm a swede it's more astounding to watch foreigners reacting to this song than colloquial speaking people and to see the same joyful face no matter the language barriers are just a blast to watch. important note why many swedes also sing along to this song not only is it a great song. but you gotta remember many swedes lost their great great grant fathers who gave their lives in this war. not saying everyone its an exceptional tune by itself and lyrics, but for some this is to honor their great great grandfather, they have books and pictures within family. Sweden is very rich in history, and sadly in sweden its often frowned upton to be patriotic becuse they often link it to racism. wich is sad actually.

I was at that show. First Sabaton concert, came over from Denmark. Wife and I were up on the stands. I remember when the show started he asked if he should speak Swedish or not, and evidently our cries of "Nooooo!" were drowned out.. so we didn't really understand what he said during the show, but that's fine. And we didn't need assistance for En Livstid I Krig, having rehearsed it at length from home. Great concert, truly. With Apocalyptica and Amaranthe giving us a good time, too.

How about we start a Patreon account called "TANK on tour!" and send Tank to some European festivals once this pandemic is over? (He can bring a friend as long as it is Chase). Also, Pär said in an interview that the Swedish lyric versions are more popular in English speaking countries (US) than the English versions. Why do you think this is Tank?
@ironboy3245

It's because of the lyrics. The English versions are written from an outsider's perspective, and the Swedish versions are written from a Swedish soldier's perspective

It's taken me a long time to figure out how to put into words how I feel about this song; It's like this band is giving voice to the sorrow of all the wars over the past ten centuries, for all of the people for whom sobbing and shedding tears simply wasn't enough to express their pain and loss. And no, I can't listen to this song without crying at least a little every single time.

Check out Pär speech during Wacken 2019, playing 2 stages as headliner, then you know how far they have come. and yes it’s true they aren’t playing that big in the USA, but that’s also, sometimes, with some bands from the USA coming to Europe. But seeing their “Devil Dogs” video clip, I miss the “small” clubshows of Sabaton: being all sweaty and “beer”-smelly (if that’s proper word.. if not f*****d it, made a new word) after the show and being completely sober and broke (from buying all that beer) 🙈🙈🙈

Your next stop on the Sabaton train has to be Uprising from Woodstock, as many others already has said. It's about the Polish resistance in Warsaw during WWII, so when they play it in Poland it's just something else. As for this song, I would love to hear how it feels to hear them sing in a language you don't understand (by the way: great pronounciation of the title, from a Swede). I can also imaging that the shot for the video being towards the crowd hits a bit closer to home for a roadie since it's pretty much how you get to see it during the show, right? In general, I like Sabaton's slower songs more than their fastpaced ones. They just nail the marching rythm and the feeling that an entire army is slowly approaching the battle.

There's a few sabaton songs like this, that are very emotional and sing about the most important parts of the worlds and Swedish history. First song on the list has got to be: 1) The Final Solution - it's about the Holocaust and the deaths that happened during this. 2) Long Live the King - this song is about the unexplained death and travel back home of the Swedish king Charles XII. 3) Cliffs of Gallipoli - a song about the battle of Gallipoli during World War 1. 4) Hearts of Iron - about the german 12th Army and it's general Walther Wenck saving 250 000 people during the battle of Halbe. 5) The Carolean's Prayer - kind of about the battle tactics the Caroleans (Swedish soldiers) were taught (March on until they saw the white in their enemies eyes) 6) Light in the Black - about the Peacekeeping forces (them leaving home, only to return not knowing if they'll be seen as heroes or monsters) 7) Purple Heart - this song is about the Vietnam war and the soldiers who fought in it. 8) The Ballad of Bull - this is the closest you'll get to an actual ballad by Sabaton and it's about Leslie "Bull" Allen who saved 12 men by climbing a hill and carrying every man one by one back down the hill 9) The Price of a Mile - it's about WWI and it's casualties. In particular the battle of Passhendaele. BOOM That's all the Sabaton songs that are similar to A Lifetime of War (I don't know if I should've included Wolfpack). I recommend checking out all of them.

I agree with you 100% when you talked about the quality of the bands from overseas, and they are not properly embraced here in North America. The "glass half full" side of this, is I have got to see all my favorite bands (Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Epica, Delain, Lacuna Coil, Sabaton, Sonata Arctica, Within Temptation, etc) in small clubs; for cheap tickets; and from the front rows. Usually with no barricades.

The great thing about "A lifetime of war" and "En Livstid I Krig" is that we have 2 different views on the same topic, 30 years war, in the lyrics. The english version is more an overview, generals perspective, the swedish is from the view of single swedish soldier. For that reason there are 2 parts on "sabaton history". No.31 for the english and No. 34 for the swedish

You're absolutely right about these bands playing clubs in the states. While its a shame, and we don't get their full production, but I REALLY love the intimacy of these incredible bands playing these smaller venues. I think the European fans don't get as personal of a connection with the band as we do here. Sabaton hangs out after almost every show. And they recognize fans and remember them from shows past, sometimes even by name. Sabaton is one of the biggest powerhouse bands I've ever seen and I love that I get to go hang out with them and connect on a real level

Just amazing performance by Sabaton!! As a true swede, veteran soldier from service abroad….This song really hit me deep down in a place I had put away! Also thinking about all the swedes that gave their life during the wartime from the ”30 year war” in the mid 1600’s. Sweden were the greatest nation in whole Europe, the ”Karoliner soldiers” in blue uniforms and yellow markings…were all heroes with training and courage that were many levels higher than any other. We had officers that were tactical genius at times. They made tactical descitions that had never been seen before…and enemy was taken by surprise. Battling from horses with sables. Even Russia were kneeling for us! In EVERY battle the king and the Karoliner soldiers were hugly outnumbered in thousands, much less artillery and always marching to the front….but nothing could stop them! We honoured our King like a god and fought for him with blood, tears and life! Our king were always seen in the first line on his horse, in every battle!! Insanly many soldiers never returned home to their familys back in Sweden. We lost 20% of our population. No war moungoring from me, just precising who this song was ment for
