Nailed It ! MotorTrend went Woke with pushing all the Government Koolaid. The publisher has No Value or perspective on what real Americans can afford. Some fantasy about some exotic cars; 90% of its content pushing deceptive content of reliability and value of EV’s, ignoring consumer demand for basic ICE. Just like the publication adding 2 pages of thicker bond paper; yet spreading the fonts to less content. We didn’t get 3X content in a once a quarter magazine; Bidenomics, paid more got less. Give us back a thin paper monthly content of real value transportation that average Americans could buy. Best issue was Pinto / CVIC comparison; real Cars , not million dollar Hurricanes on Rodeo Dr. RIP MOTOR TREND; getting back to values isn’t in your DNA.

Roadkill lost its fans when it moved its roadkill series to Motortrend on demand and became paid to watch. Even if it was $1 a month, people will not pay. The convenience of watching Roadkill on KZbin was lost. Soon other channels took their place, and Roadkill became history years ago. Samcrac, Vicegrip garage, Cleetus McFarland, Mattsoffroad garage, GoonzSquad etc. picked up the viewers in a heartbeat. Time for Fridburger and the other guy to make a channel together.

A good phone with a cheap Anamorphic Adapter and half decent gimbal, with LumaFusion to edit in on the phone, can shoot and edit and upload in less time then it takes to get an ENG camera on location and a LiveU connected, and look great.

Retired ad agency media director here. I think there will always be a market for a good story, well told. But the challenge is one of cost. Back in the early 80's. Miami Vice was the first network prime-time show to break the $1 million production cost per episode, however, a big audience (huge by today's standards) could easily justify it. 40 years later, technology has fragmented the viewing audience to such a degree that making a reasonable profit has become a major challenge.
@VL19752 күн бұрын
Except in this instance, MotorTrend decided to pull Roadkill JUST as KZbin was really starting to blow up for creators. They thought if they took control and consolidated all their shows on 1 network and charge people, that would make them profitable. After 10 years, it fell apart because people are pulling the plug and moving away from cable and even subscription services now! They calculated wrong and killed almost the whole franchise from MotorTrend to Hot Rod Magazine.
@57WillysCJ2 күн бұрын
Freiburger did an anouncement on his channel. I thought something was in the wind when he started doing KZbin content. It's got to be hard for someone with that long of a career with MotorTrend to not be with them anymore. It's not like they can go back to magazine work as it really doesn't exist. Still hard core fans will be with them on their various channels. It was sad when their bosses took them off of KZbin but when you are an employee the person paying the bills dictates.
@logicthought24Күн бұрын
Freiburger already has 234K subs on his channel and the content is enjoyable. He doesn't have the big team he did when MT was footing the production bill. We'll see where he goes with it. He has a lot of friends in the KZbin world so there should be some interesting collabs in the future.

Just more proof that Warner Brothers have really dropped the ball in recent years. Only thing keeping it afloat is the Attractions, and a couple of select movies, Dune, the Harry Potter & Wizarding world income. $40+billion in debts... Disney would go the same way if it wasn't for the parks. These megacorps are on limited time I feel. Advertisers prefer online, as you get a higher view rate in shorter time, and a higher click through, all at a fraction of tv advert costs... They need to move with the times.

I remember when I was 30 years old I had 4 subscriptions to car enthusiast magazines. As print media has died off, I'm left with one that produces an edition every other month. As those print houses moved to diversify into screen media they failed to fully look at their established competition. They could emulate the efficiency, cost savings, and speed of on-line creators and work with them OR go for full-on productions with all the costs, delays, and redundancy of reporting most of the stuff we got days or weeks earlier. They went with the second option, hoping to outdo the on-line creators and keeping all the control and profit to themselves. Cooperation works, greed doesn't. In the end, they got what they deserved. Sad so many talented folk now have to give the finger to MoterTrend, but most will probably have an online show soon.

Roadkill was my entire teen years, and inspired my other channel. What some people don't realize is that Roadkill worked because of what it was, which was a semi-high production appearing show with low production hosts, where creative control was completely up to them, and they could be themselves, not some scripted garbage. If Freiburger and Finnegan were to try and recreate it, which they won't, because they both have their own stuff going on, and without the overarching company that can expunge cash to put people together, we will only see one-offs every so often, because KZbin simply doesn't incentivize higher budget production. Even 1 Cam Op production which they usually shoot with 2 or 3 plus editors, its just too expensive to survive, unless they are willing to sacrifice quite a bit in order for it to happen. Unfortunately, it seems like the general public WANT these types of videos AND events, but without backing from a company who can pour money into it, they cannot justify trying to make it all work. It is very sad, and I watched every Roadkill, but when it went to Discovery+, it went down the drain, not production wise, but the app is so poorly setup and made it a nightmare to simply watch a single video, this along with bad marketing on new episode announcements, and seemingly no release schedule, just felt like a slap in the face to viewers. I hope they continue, and that someone is able to bring some of these hosts together in a way that is sustainable at least for a few years.

The other factor with traditional tv is that people dvr them and skip the commercials. Streaming makes viewers watch the ads. KZbin, part of each ad.

The Roadkill guys have KZbin channels. I hope they collaborate and grow.

The truth is, Freiburger and Finnegan are now free to engage in whatever shenanigans they so choose.

The ugly truth is that the production quality is not what brings eyes. Motortrend can’t compete with a KZbinr filming with their phone, and they should have seen that coming. Going forward, I hope that back catalog makes it to KZbin, and I’d be onboard to pitch in for crowdfunding more Roadkill. Let the fans take it all over- we could hardly do worse.

The Bugatti looks awesome in the garage. It looks much better than Ed's!

I loved Roadkill here in Australia, when it was on KZbin. But when they put it on MotorTrend they made it harder to watch. Fine, a VPN solved that. Then the requirement was that you needed a US credit card in order to pay for it. It's like they didn't want anyone other than US viewers to be able to access it. Big middle finger at them for doing that. I see so many creators breaking away and heading back to KZbin without their corporate overlords.

If you look at the trend of most network television viewership has been on the decline for years. The peak for automotive was in the early to mid 2000’s. The death of automotive media started with the end of the original Top Gear. Which inspires content creators to this day.

I am Ambidextrous, I watch TV streaming and UTube. Motortrend had 10s of millions of subscribers, at around $5 a month. I would have thought it was very profitable

It's never profitable when you use "Hollywood Accounting".

NCIS is still a huge show on CBS...yes they do put it on Paramount+ but it is like a week behind of something.

I was told when notified my Motortrend channel subscription was being cancelled that to get their content, including new episodes, was to go either to Discovery+ or Max (which I chose at twice the monthly cost)... very little new content and not all the old content.... crazy

Well, if they're responsible for the original cast of Car Fix leaving, good. Their replacements were terrible. Miss Lou and Jared😢

I used to watch RoadKill religiously. Then they switched to MT and wanted money to watch. That’s when I stopped watching. They screwed over their audience. Lots of kids would watch this and see some good tips and tricks as well as getting kids into cars. By switching over they alienated their audience. I do not feel sorry for RK or MT.
