Doug im a long term watcher from Scotland mate. Can i just say the UK channels that are doing the copygear vids are getting massive amounts of flack because they are buying bmws and porsches for these type challange vids. Nobody in the UK with a brain would go near a BMW, Audi or Porsche at the 3yr old mark. I've no idea why now that Americans such as yourself are doing these type vids that you are making the same mistake. Car guys who want a decent cheap beater/runnabout DONT buy BMW or Porsche mate. Its like none of you are actual car guys there are loads of better cars than this for this type challenge. Please Doug dont be generic with the vehicle choices mate its boring and you aint a boring guy.

I think the Nissan would be pretty comfortable, and pretty fun in the mountains to drive a non-mountain car hard, and it will be decently practical. I'd say it's a solid 2nd place.. Me personally I'd take the Versa over all of these.

Putting the car in neutral down hill actually gives you worse gas mileage on newer cars because it burns fuel as if it's idling. Leaving it in gear, even at higher RPM, burns almost zero fuel as long as you aren't on the gas pedal; the mechanical momentum keeps the engine turning over and the computer cuts off the fuel injection.

That's what cars do, but that doesn't mean it's more efficient than going neutral. By using neutral, you are keeping the engine at idle and consuming a small amount of fuel, but you are also decoupling the wheels from the transmission and engine, therefore eliminating an incredible amount of parasitic drag, especially true on bigger engines with beefy transmissions.

No. More modern cars do not shift into neutral to save gas. The fuel management system will have to send gas to the engine in order to keep it running. If you had left it in gear then the vehicle's forward momentum keeps the engine running without having to send gas to it.

We all miss Top Gear. The Top Gear way, which is far more entertaining, is for the challenges to be unknown ahead of time to all participants. Also, you had the right idea with buying something for each o ther’s cars, but didn’t go far enough. You need to buy things so large that it requires strapping things to the roof or removing the rear window of the corvette. Or so long that Doug has to remove the rear hatch. Or so smelly that the only alternative is to drive with the windows open. Go further!
