Styled by Ian Callum I think, same person behind the Aston Martin DB9 and Jaguar XK. What amazes me is that it's not only gorgeous, it's smaller and lighter than a modern Mini Cooper but somehow has a bigger boot?

Watching these vids, I remembered how good my old 1.7 was and immediately started scrolling the marketplace. After a few months, I found a rust free 2000 1.7 in panther black. It still needed a mechanical overhaul and some cosmetic work (which I did myself where possible), but what a car!

Had my Puma 1.7 since new, nearly 20 years. The only problems are two new glovebox hinges replaced over the years. Incredibly nimble to drive, perfect for class A/B roads, and I prefer it to my Boxster S on those journeys.

I previously owned two 1997 Discovery's which I enjoyed driving and didn't give much trouble. I then bought a 98 P38 which require me to do a lot of work. When I came across a 99 Autobiography P38 for $1000 Cdn I bought that and sold the 98. After 2 years the 99 has been reliable. I also have a 2008 RRSC and I like driving the P38 almost as much. The P38 is amazing off road considering the luxury. Never failed to follow the Defenders in my off road club.

In my 205 I drove 7500 miles across Europe, 2 bikes and camping gear onboard, mountain tracks, bridges with big holes in them, washed out roads, blast furnace heat and the only problem I had was an alternator that didn't charge at high revs. That was solved by buying a spare battery and jump leads (or driving slower). I simply don't want or need any other car.

your BCM issue on the door could be a screw chafing through the wiring harness next to the door under the carpet, expose the harness, lift it slightly and turn it through 180 degrees, you will see an exposed screw coming through the floor and the green and purple wire may be getting chafed, you will see the copper core going green, just snip the bad bit out and fit a connector with a bit more wire and put some wood onto the screw or chop it down, replace everything and hey presto, it will be fixed or no different...

An alternative to the Puma might be a Cougar from the same time period. Should be about the same price (and equally hard to find a good one), and give a lot more room since it is Mondeo based. I have one since 6 years as a cheap "classic," and it's been giving me no problems at all (2.0 Zetec)
@chrispenn715

The Puma is in that perfect spot - most people regard it as an old banger, but it's on the edge of becoming a classic - best of both worlds in that it's cheap to buy and run and fun to drive. It might even be worth more than you paid come sale time. I love cars at this stage of their existence - my favourite was a Mercedes 200T that I bought years ago when it was at this stage in its life - cost me £150! I sold it for £350 a few months later - It's now a true classic, but expensive to buy!

People on KZbin are putting out better car content than most mainstream media has in the last 2 years. Great video guys, just one thing. When filming these sorts of intros, change the order of the cars over. The largest car (Range Rover) has to stay on the farthest end of the screen and the smallest (205) stays on the closest. That way you can have your hosts closer to the center of frame and the cars remain visible as well.

If I was to put a car on pure reliability, I’d pick the Peugeot 205 any day. Old French cars were known for just going and going. Yes the Puma and certainly the Range Rover are a different league in luxury but if anything is going to get you home, it’s that tatty little Peugeot.

The Ford Puma is a really looking nice car. I wonder why it didn't sell or wasn't as popular as the Ford Fiesta. To me the Puma still looks to modern for a classic. The Range Rover is more of a classic because of its Square/ box shape, but the luxury interior is just as modern as today's cars. The 205 on the other hand is an absolute classic both exterior and interior. The 205 engine will go on forever but the bodywork will be a challenge.
@another3997
@another3997 3 жыл бұрын
It did sell well, but Ford had to decide on a choice between the rather niche Puma or the more mainstream, and cheaper, Ford KA... which was also based on that old Fiesta platform. The KA sold like hot cakes, and remained in production for a very long time. It was also fun to drive, slightly more practical and spawned the SportKa and StreetKa. Ford knew there was just no way the Puma would sell in very large numbers, no matter how good it was.

One word of warning for the range rover p38, the 2.5 isn't great, isn't not as economical as you'd expect for a 2.5 BMW diesel, and heads and head gaskets are an issue, every single 2.5 ive known, and many others have been at fault with the engine, Im guessing because its such a heavy car (especially vogues like my dad's was) while it will cost you more for fuel, the rover v8s were, at least in my experience, are surprisingly more reliable

Bought my daughter a 206 1.1 petrol after she passed her test. 7 yrs later I have advised her to buy a ‘safer’ car. Cant prize it out of her hands. Its very tinny but what a lovely car to drive. She absolutely loves it. High miles now but drives as it did when bought with 35k. Apart from easy diy servicing and is really easy. Had coil pack, new radiator tyres, exhaust, cam belt and water pump. All consumables but ones I ve done myself as u tube user. When i drive it i curiously see her point, its a lovely tinny car to drive. My father had a company 205 1.9d and did 250k in 4 yrs, bought it and gave it to my brother who did another 80k before he crashed it. Peugeots appear tinny and naff but as utilitarian vehicles A to B cars for cheap reliable motoring, they rock. I currently own a citroen berlingo Mk1 as my daily driver used for all sorts of tasks and it is a belting little vehicle but as with peugeot worry about crashing and safety. The older cars had more personality.

I love the puma in-spite of all this, if anything it add character. The P38 might be a cheap classic to buy, but it will more than likely bankrupt any normal person trying to keep it on the road. Before any owner tries to convince me otherwise, I sell parts for these as my day job, and if you happen to be lucky and have not had a massive bill yet, don't worry, you will eventually. i think i have to disagree with the statement that the Peugeot 205 isn't a good car, it's a great car, it's one of the most sensible option if you want a cheap and reliable classic daily driver, even if this one is quite rough. Hmm. I had a 205 diesel back when they were current and don't remember it being all that bad on the motorway - even at slightly more than 70. It was a truly horrible car to be in with terrible seats and tupperware interior bits but it did a solid 40mpg all the time even with a pretty heavy foot. I also had a puma breifly but can't agree with the short gearing comment. Close, yes but short? I had that and an Escort GTi (1.8) at the same time and the Escort felt much shorter geared or at least much more eager. It was also a much nicer car to be in and drive. I never had a P38 because I don't like gambling or own shares in BP. My 3.5 V8 classic (2 door LWB - would be a rarety now) was thirsty and unreliable enough that I never went for another.
