RoadTrip to Tibet | EP2: Meeting the Naxi People Living on a Massive Stone in Lijiang, Yunnan

In this episode, we journeyed to a village entirely constructed upon a massive stone, where over 100 Naxi families reside in a compact community. Yunnan's mountainous highlands typically see settlements nestled in the flat areas between peaks, known as "basins," such as those found in Dali old town and Lijiang old town. However, over 100 kilometers from the basin of Lijiang lies the Jinsha River, the upper reached of Yangtze river, where a group of Naxi people have been living for centuries on top of a stone. I'm curious why did their ancestors choose to migrate here and settle in such a secluded place? How do they live these days? Let's explore together.

What more can I add, except that you have created another work of art, perhaps your best so far, with the exception of Xi'an. Your camera work is exceptional, editing also exceptional, and the dialog perfect. You seem to have a way to befriend the locals, men and women, so that they can tell their stories very comfortably. Honglin, you has become one of my favorite youtubers. Your breath-taking episodes have inspired me to learn Mandarin. Are Westerner tourists welcomed in these rural areas and would a tourist be able to get around in just Mandarin? Or do most people in Yunnan speak primarily their own dialect?

Thank you! Western tourists have been visiting these regions since the 1980s. The Naxi people also traveled to Europe to promote their homeland. Learning Mandarin Chinese is a good idea, as it is widely used in different regions of China. You will especially receive good feedback when communicating in Mandarin with Chinese people under the age of 50 for non-Mandarin speaking area. If you go to other countries like Malaysia, Singapore, etc., Mandarin is also one of the top languages they learn in school from a young age. (My first language is Sichuan-Chongqin dialect)

There is an issue with Google Maps in China, it is about 25 years out of date. You can't use Google Maps inside of China or you would end up driving off a cliff. lol Baidu is going to be what you use.　Look for 云南省 in Baidu.　Then 丽江市. The village will probably be somewhere near there.
