The most ironic thing about the wwz movie is that it does exactly what the book criticised, the book mentions how movies glorify the individual of an effort in the form on one man "cracking the code" and saving the day when in reality its the combined work of hundreds that develops the counter measures that ultimately only work to a degree and humans must learn to adapt to the new world and the movie just goes "hansome hunk scientist saves world singlehandedly with wonder cure and the day is saved"

It's been a while since I read the book, but I recall thinking that one of the cooler methods of transmission were people getting under the table organ transplants in Asia. Some of those organs turned out to be infected, but the infection took longer to spread and produce symptoms than other vectors, which helped spread the virus globally. Also, yeah, book was definitely better, but I will give props to the movie for coming up with the sickness camouflage, which I thought was rather original, and the horde scenes of the zombies were pretty dang impressive. The cannibalism for the sake of survival was really cool too, so were the sewer people. But worst of all....the wwz zombies didn't run. I swear they got halfway through the bodyguards chapter and stopped reading. The movie also ignores how the UK survived, taking weapons from museums was brilliant so too was taking over castles for bases. 11:40, that is in fact, a Nuke. Nuclear Reactors don’t just explode like that, and if they do, its not nearly as big. Even then, modern nuclear Power Plants are safe enough where if there’s no one manning it, it could probably keep going as long as the fuel still has energy to give
@TheDeinonychus2 жыл бұрын
True, though considering Roanoke is a microbiologist and not a physicist, it's not surprising he wouldn't know the difference. Most people don't realize that nuclear reactors and nuclear bombs work in very different ways. Hell, they generally don't even use the same material as fuel. The main key difference is that nuclear bombs want to use a material that is highly reactive, so that once criticality is reached, the material releases nearly all of it's energy at once. By contract, a reactor uses fuel that has a much lower rate of reaction. In a reactor, nuclear material is held in a state of sub-criticality, though even if it did go critical, it wouldn't be a sudden release of all it's energy. Criticality is simply the point where the nuclear reaction becomes self-sustaining without any external influence. The few instances of a nuclear reactor exploding were not the result of the fuel like in a nuclear bomb, but rather the cooling medium (typically water) flashing to steam and creating enough pressure to rupture the containment vessel. Add to that the fact that water will at extreme temperatures separate into oxygen and hydrogen (both highly flammable) and such an explosion can be very destructive, but nowhere near as destructive as an actual nuclear detonation. The fact is, if a nuclear reactor was just left alone in an operational state, so long as water was still flowing through the core, the core would over time actually become less reactive, as radioactive materials always decay into less reactive elements.

One small correction regarding your comment about the nuke over the mountains. A nuclear reactor going critical is normal and desired as that’s how fission reactions are maintained for use for power. PROMPT critical is what people think of when a reactor “explodes”. Even then, the reactor itself isn’t exploding, but the water being used to cook it is near-instantly being flashed to steam in a contained environment. A reactor can melt down and really mess things up, but technically speaking a reactor CAN’T explode in the sense that a nuclear weapon does.
@FurryEskimo2 жыл бұрын
11:00 That’s a nuke, reactor’s don’t explode like that (and it worries me how many people think they do..). Causing such an explosion is actually very difficult, and a reactor will usually meltdown, at worst resulting in a buildup of explosive gasses which causes a basic explosion and possibly a fire that could throw radioactive material into the air.

I find it very fascinating how it uses the brain to replicate but also somehow keeps the very very very basic level operational as the body falls apart. As well as how it kills any creature but cannot reanimate them due to killing the host before it can reach that level.

The Solomon Virus avoided those who were diseased. The process of converting individual cells into their in organisms was a slow process compared to that of just fully infecting the body. According to the rules of this particular zombie universe, I'd be one of the ones ignored by the infected. I shattered my leg in a motorcycle accident a few years ago, and had a boat load of titanium put into it. It was a compound fracture, so infection did set in in the beginning. But, my leg swells every day, and has since the accident in 2013. That inflammation (as the first sign of illness, or something wrong with my body) and the damage/regrowth of the bones would effectively "camouflage" me from the zombies (as my odor would reflect my illness). That makes me wonder if smokers would also be ignored, due to thier damaged lung tissue. Come to think of it drug addicts would also probably be ignored due to the altered odor of their tissue (caused by the drugs).

Awesome video, but I did find a couple of small problems: when animals are mentioned; the undead absolutely went after any animals in sight and there are more than a few references to that in both books (WWZ & The Zombie Survival Guide). The chapter in WWZ that details the K-9 units is particularly good :) The time time to infect depending on region is a cool concept and makes a ton of sense, I like that. The whole "scent" of an uninfected vs. diseased person is particular to the movie only as a plot device; in the book, scent is mentioned in the tones of "no chemical or biological agent has been shown to mask a healthy human from the dead". Not a direct quote, but that pretty much sums it up. Love everything zombie and your video goes right into my archive ;)

It’s interesting how infection changes a person’s scent, I was shopping one day and happened across an individual who was obviously very sick due to the fact that they were frail and thin and at the time I didn’t think anything about it but when I went by her again in passing I happened to overhear her speaking with I guess a friend or family member and she told this person that her illness was in fact terminal and I try not to pay attention to something that isn’t my business but as I walked by her I smelled something I have never smelled before but for some reason I knew what I was before I had heard her say the word terminal and it was the smell of death!! I don’t know how I knew that that’s what it was but somehow I did!! Is the smell of death something we automatically recognize even if we’ve never come across it before?
@brandonkohler66772 жыл бұрын

Smell of death is an actual thing! Some people have a more acute sense of smell and can scent DKA in people, cancers, infections ECT. My mom has a 'super' nose and works as an ER nurse and can reliably tell when people being brought in are fixing to go into or actively are in DKA. She also caught infections that were almost missed by doctors by smell alone~
@Stella2U Жыл бұрын
Maybe not death but the smell of an opportunistic infection. You can often smell that on very sick people. Clearly, she wasn't dead yet although some parts of her might have been headed that way. Once when I worked in a detox, I had a patient who looked very clean but smelled very funky. Turned out one of his fingers had been stabbed with a fork ( at least that's the story he told) and he had a nasty infection. Because it was his hand, he had to be hospitalized and given IV antibiotics.

I don’t have a super nose, but I can tell when my kids are sick based on their smell. I don’t think I could do it with anyone else. It was really frustrating before I realized my lead-time, but now I know if I wait 3 days I’ll only have to go in the one time instead of twice.

Love this movie despite its flaws. It's the only zombie flick I've seen where the lethality and speed of the zombies seems like it would actually have the potential to cause a global collapse. Even more so than the invulnerable Return of the Living Dead zombies because you could just chop off their limbs to take care of them. WWZ zombies can ant pile their way up walls and are so damn fast that I think even the military could possibly be overwhelmed. Truly the only zombie scenario I would agree with on the "why you wouldn't survive" series 😁 Also (except for the ending) I disagree this is a generic zombie film. You are kidding. Right? The garbage truck not existing in one shot, then springing into being a second later to plaster the cop is " smart"? The garbage truck having to plow through dozens of cars to get where it was, and somehow does so silently enough for the cop to miss the oncoming doom is " smart"? Pitt paying more attention to his daughter whining in the backseat, than to driving, while they are fleeing for their very lives during a zombie infestation/ riot is " smart"? Not pushing all of the furniture they could down the stairwell to slow/ stop the infects at the apartment building where they pick up the boy and evacuate on the helicopter, while doing very little else to protect themselves is " smart"? Dr. trippy slipping and capping himself within ten seconds of landing was " smart"? Pitt's character not putting the sat phone on vibrate or turning it off, while in a situation where being silent was not only essential, but was stressed to him by the military guys was " smart"? Pitt's character's wife randomly calling him when she knew he was out in dangerous situations, where stealt may mean life or death, was " smart"? Believing that, because he saw the virus take only twelve seconds to affect the transformation to zombie ONCE meant that is how long it will definitely, always take, to the point of banking his family on it was " smart"? The idea that the zombies can smell infection , while running and attacking everything at full speed, even in an individual who was infected moments ago, is " smart"? Pitt leaving his only weapon outside the clean room was " smart"? Pitt pulling the metal from his injury was " smart"? The rules of the world being that is was a " disease" and not" reanimated dead" but then showing a hand, whose body had been reduced to ash, still moving was " smart and explaining the rules well"? The idea that one guy, who is not a physician/ medical researcher, while constantly fleeing for his life, figured out that the infected avoid the sick, while members of the WHO don't was " smart"? Not telling Pitt the code before he went into the infected wing of the WHO, was " smart"? Not figuring out that he could write questions about what infectious agent he should or should not inject himself with, then waiting for the doctors to answer by manipulating the gimbal on the camera he was facing was " smart"? Also. NO. Predators DO NOT avoid sick prey. They preferentially attack sick and injured prey, as it makes the prey easier to catch/ kill. Ask a biologist/ zoologist. No. Viral infections CANNOT spread through a human body in seconds. Full stop!!! Can't happen. No. This movie was far from " smart".

@Kayli W. Garbage truck did not exist in one shot, but existed in the very next shot less than a second later was smart? Garbage truck had to plough through a dozen plus cars to hit the cop, did so, which it really probably could not do, and, to make it totally impossible , did so completely silently was smart? A , supposedly, smart and experienced guy being distracted during a life and death situation, with his family's lives in jeopardy , by his daughter, when his wife was dealing with her, was smart? The movie making a point of this being about infected and not undead, but then showing a disembodied hand still moving, hours after it was disconnected , was smart? A supposed expert, claiming that predators avoid the sick, when , no, they don't, they actually preferentially prey on the sick is smart? The idea that the infected can smell the difference between a healthy and ill target while running at full speed in a crowd is smart? The idea that a virus can spread through a body in 12 seconds, which is physically impossible because that means the virus is invading cells and forcing replication of itself at the speed of light, while getting pumped through the human body at impossible speeds is smart?( No . the writers just don't know how human bodies or viruses work) The not actually planning AT ALL in the WHO lab was smart? No. This movie may have had a few smart parts, but, it was not itself smart. Also, thanks for calling me stupid. I had not insulted you, just this dumpster fire of a movie( which most agree was indeed a dumpster fire) . Way to be classy.

@Kayli W. "I'll take a temporary lapse of judgement due to shock in a character who is otherwise acting intelligently through the majority of the film over someone who is nearly retarded during the entire thing, and has me thinking the whole time "why don't you just...!"" But, he really did just that with me. He made stupid decision after stupid decision. He got distracted by his whining daughter, who his wife was handling, while driving for his family's lives. He , and his family, made no effort to barricade the stairs at the apartment building. He, and his family, made little effort to arm themselves, until the last minute, at the apartment building. He assumed , after one observation, under a stressful situation, that the virus MUST take exactly 12 seconds to infect, even after being told by others that that was not a rule set in stone( and , supposedly, have some education about how viruses actually work, wherein he would know that a 12 second time is physically impossible). He left his phone on in a situation where he had to be as silent as can be. He pulled the metal out of his wound( Yes. Dumb. Was dumb when Irwin did it, was dumb when Pitt's character did it). He made no effort to gather as much information from the WHO staff as possible before venturing into the dangerous infected lab. He could not figure out he could write messages to the staff and they could operate the gimbal on the camera to answer him. He , apparently, didn't bring his sat phone into the lab to get advice from his base. Finally, he abandoned, didn't drop, didn't get disarmed, just put down and left his only weapon in yet another dangerous situation. And, remember, this wasn't just some average Joe off the street. This was a guy who was selected because he was supposed to be very smart, educated, and experienced in dangerous situations. If he was just " some guy" some of this could be excused, but this guy was supposed to be highly trained and effective in life and death situations. That's why he was picked to do the job.

@Kayli W. So much wrong here. No. Smart people are not immune to doing dumb things, but, in this movie, they seem immune to doing smart things. The movie went out of its way to say they were not dead. Pitt's characters wife could handle looking for their daughters toy, he needed to keep his eyes on the road, but , this highly trained and experienced professional was too busy looking for a toy instead of paying attention to what was important. i.e. driving at high speeds during a public emergency. No. Predators DO NOT avoid the sick. They preferentially prey on the sick and injured. Why/ because they are easier to catch. He held up a sign saying to tell his wife he loved her, or some such. " "Things like pulling the metal out of his wound aren't dumb in the reality sense, as most people would do that too; it's extremely common for people coming out of surgery to rip out IVs, for example. I don't think the movie is dumb for adding that part, I just think the character did something dumb." Those people are under the effects of sedatives/ anesthesia. Are you comparing the actions of someone impaired by drugs to the guy that they picked to try to save the world because he is so highly qualified????? Are YOU on drugs too???? "As for how Pitt's character acted, I just get the feeling that you don't have a lot of life experience or maybe you're autistic or something. You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of how stress and adrenaline affect your ability to think - " Oh please. I have a great idea how stress affects people. 25 years in EMS here. If I made the stupid ass decisions this supposed professional made I would have been sued into oblivion and fired over two decades ago. If the movie sets up that he is this right guy for the job they can't then have him keep making rookie mistakes. It makes no sense, but then, neither does much else in this movie. Nope. At the end of the day most of the movie is stupid and unrealistic. Sure, there are a lot of dumb decisions in zombie movies( hell, in horror movies in general) but this one billed its main protagonist as a highly trained and experienced professional, then had him make rookie mistake after rookie mistake. That would be like branding your main character as a highly qualified surgeon and then without other good reason, have them not scrub before surgery , forget what organ to remove/fix, and forget to close the incision at the end. Are any of those mistakes someone who did not know what they were doing would make? Yes. Are those mistakes you would expect a trained surgeon to make? No. Not at all. You would certainly not expect said surgeon to make all of them. But, that was Pitt's character. Forget to keep the phone from ringing? Check. Don't think of simple security measures for your family during a emergency? Check. Make stupid assumptions about an unknown disease with incredibly limited data? Check. Forget to ask pretty much any questions from trained medical professionals that may save your life and/ or the world? Check. Forget your one and only weapon when you really need it? Checkaroo. Just inject any , possibly rapidly fatal, and possibly uncurable infectious agent when you could easily write notes asking the people on the other end of the camera what ones to take, but do write a message asking them to tell your wife/ family you love them? Check-check-checkity-check-check. Seriously. for this guy supposedly being so good as things like this that they put him basically in charge of saving the world it would be like me forgetting to put my medical equipment in my ambulance after checking it at the start of my shift, then forgetting how to start and IV, then forgetting what medication to give for ventricular tachycardia, then forgetting to give my report at the hospital, all in one shift, and then you saying " It's okay. People forget things in stressful situations". Yes. People do. When trained professionals do it, all in one day to boot, they get fired, sued, and , possibly, incarcerated. Why? Because we expect more of them. The movie set us up to expect more from him( he was not the typical horror movie" Stupid teen". He was a highly trained and experienced professional) then seemed to forget who their protagonist was supposed to be and let him make normal " guy on the street " mistakes.

I love this movie for showing the zombie Apocalypse basically from day 1. So many stories just cut to when everyone is dead, and there’s only a few survivors walking around. (Probably because that’s way cheaper to film). I love seeing the movements and responses or governments and entire city populations. That’s what links the book and movie for me, they both have these really procedural parts. Which I associate with good science fiction. It was also nice to see so many of the protagonists looking for a cure to help humanity. Instead of a grizzled survivor stumbling upon it, and being convinced to care about people.

Yeh the book is WAY better and like you said 180 degrees different. For those of you interested in it, it’s a collection of interviews from all kinds of people all over the world AFTER the war, all their collective first hand experiences. Brilliant story format if you ask me and masterfully written.

I think a meta analysis of Danny Devito would be hilarious

Honestly, I'm a bit pissed that I didn't get a 30 minute Roanoke analysis about Danny Devito. But, I got a 27 minute Roanoke analysis of ze Undead, so I'm pretty stoked.

The two smart things the MC did during the movie. 1 wrapping his arms in magazines to protect from bites and 2 running to the roof edge so if he did begin to turn the convulsions from turning would throw him from the roof.

I gotta say that scene of that poor bastard having a seizure before succumbing to the infection always used terrify me when I was younger. Even now I do still find it a little unnerving ngl. It has also always been my opinion that becoming infected with this particular zombie virus is a fate far worse than death

Danny Devito is a man that can't be explained by science, he's just that powerful.

Starting out as a single cell organism, Danny Devito beat all the odds and out wriggled his counterparts to achieve demigod status How did this happen? Well, the other single cell organisms quite frankly, gave up.

It could also be that how rapid the effect is, could depend on how long the 'zombie' has been active, and how long that black substance could build up in the mouth and other areas, increasing the degree to which the conversion takes place, highlighted in the case of the army captain who remains cognoscente long enough to remove himself as a vector.

The most unbelievable scene in this entire movie is is that 1 husband in the beginning that helped Brad Pitt refusing the helicopter rescue in the middle of a zombie apocalypses.

Another awesome video Roanoke! I have two hypothesis's (hypothesi? hypotheseses?) anyway! One; the Captain's ability to last for longer than the standard infection time seen in the movie could be related to: A.- The fact that US ServiceMembers have about 30-40 vaccinations compared to the average human mammal lol. Or B.- Having landed on Camp Humphreys in what clearly appeared to be monsoon season, resulted in freshly rinsed, squeaky clean Zombies! This would of course result in a lower concentration of black stuff around the nomnom area, and a subsequently cleaner chomp. Always a pleasure to watch your videos and benefit from your knowledge. Stay awesome and alive!

@@rsmith6366 they did mention in the film that infection time was much slower in the Eastern countries.

The only thing that bothers me is how good the infected are at avoiding the sick ones, they should at least bump or trip over them at best or trample them at worse since they move like a crazy wave.

They do sort of run into Brad pitt in the west wing but yah they seem like crazily repulsed

Just wanted to point out that at one point during the movie when they're trying to find the viruses or whatever he specifically asks for the worst non-lethal illness that they have so that it can still be cured because if they die it eliminates the purpose.

The original Max Brooks zombies are SLOW zombies, not the fast rage zombies of the movie. Totally different in how outbreaks and battles take place.

its really funny how many movies point out issues with virus's spreading but no one really understands it when it actually happens
