In This video I teach you how to catch, cook, shell, and eat crayfish. I set out to catch some legal sized crayfish, and I was successful. I caught plenty of undersized crayfish, and oversized crayfish, but I did manage to catch and cook my daily bag limit of crayfish.
Murray crayfish are the second biggest crayfish in the world, or should I say the second biggest 'freshwater' crayfish in the world, second only to the giant Tasmanian crayfish.

When I'd come back from crabbing, my mum would set up shop with a long-handled teaspoon, a pair of adjustable pliers and small toffee hammer. She'd be as happy as a pig in poo. If she was feeling fancy she'd have a loaf of fresh bread, some fresh lettuce leaves, salt and pepper and maybe some thousand island dressing. She always preferred spanner crabs and sand crabs over muddies. Crayfish were all good too.

Another great video as alwaus mate! I took my mate out(previously mentioned in other comments as the new cod fisherman) on his first Cray session last night. Unfortunately no cook-up for us this time but still had success in terms of getting him his first - a bloody HUGE female. I called it as soon as the net popped out of the water and i saw her claws and eventually the rest of her body that she was well over, and then she was full of eggs on top of that so just ended up getting a quick pic and a measure, she came in at around 14-16cm on the carapace, didn't want to keep her out too long and stress her so made sure to get her back in the water and away she swam❤️

When getting the meat out of the arms of crabs, we always use the back end of a tea spoon. Easy peasy. The claw itself we use a nutcracker on. Or rather a specialized version made for crustaceans. But in a pinch a regular nutcracker works as long as it is made from metal.

If you press the tail towards the inside of the campus of the tail it cracks then you just open it up like a butterfly and the meat comes out. You don’t need to with the clause. A spoon tapping will crack it generally best to rip the claw off crack around the top and you’ll get a little lollipop.

@@robbiefishing it is quite tasty I do small amount purple cabbage small amount green cabbage (1/4 of small cabbages) 1 small tin sweet corn kernels (has to be sweet corn) good size bunch or coriander 1 small shallot (small white onion) 2 good size limes Slice cabbage very very thin as thin as you can Finely chop shallots Finely chop coriander Drain sweet corn Add all into a mixing bowl add joy ice of both limes Allow to sit covered in fridge for 1-1 1/2 hours longer if you have the time then drain as much juice off as you can Grab wrap lay a thin layer of avo paste (if you like avo) then pay a small bed of the slaw add as much meat as you like (I usually go 1 who cray or 10 yabbies to 1 wrap) then add small amount of pink salt or fine rock salt and enjoy .. just for preference I find that they taste slightly better on the spinach green wraps at woolies or coles and have it with a nice white wine or low carb light beer that’s not a bitter (craft or fruity beers is best)

Great video 🎉, those are some very big creations. Ty for sharing how to clean and cook them. In the USA Massachusetts we have them but the tails are only about 1 inch to 2 inches long if you're lucky🎉❤😊

@@edmartin875 Yeah but they look like so much fun to catch. I emailed an online store called nets and more r cently to see if they would ship those white crawfish nets to Australia. I want to try them on yabbies, but they never replied.

You could do with a Delux Tinkerer Model Swiss Army knife Mate. It has two blades, a decent set of pliers that could probably crack those claws. And the Victorinox legendary scissors that would probably be perfect for cutting open those huge tails with. There is even an awl on the backside that could be used as a meat picker for those pesky little legs. The knife itself is heavy enough that you could use either end as a handy little hammer to break through the claws with or that legs. They even come with a toothpick and tweezers. I've carried mine for over thirty years now and I would be lost without it.
