If you approach your Prius and it no longer knows who you are the problem most likely is the battery in the key remote control is dead. This video shows how to replace the battery. You will need a #00 phillips head screwdriver and a CR2032 3 volt lithium button type battery. This procedure covers 2004 - 2009 model year Prius cars.
Toyota Part Number: 89994-47061 or 89904-47011, 89994-47060 (superseded), 89994-47091 (superseded)
Fits 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 Toyota Prius (silver logo on the back, prox system)
Remote control from 2005 Toyota Prius Gen 2, should be similar for 2004,2006,2007,2008,2009 years. Tear Down, dis-assembly, battery replacement, frame replacement.

Thanks for the tip. One thing I found is that you actually dont need the screwdriver to push the button in when getting the back cover plate on and off. You can just use your finger to pull the lever to the side and it will come off and on.

To get the battery out faster, take the flathead and push down on the edge of the battery underneath that semicircular bracket. Pushing down creates a see-saw effect that pushes the battery up on the side opposite the bracket, and allows you to just pull the battery out with your fingers in about two seconds. I figured that out after struggling to get an exact underneath for several minutes.

I always watch this video when I have to replace the battery. Only thing: my battery cover broke years ago, so I only unscrew 3 screws as the fourth is now permanent! And the cover is broken to release without removing the fourth. Still works. AND, the part you push in to release the outer cover is broken also, but I can still get it open and it will still work. Fingers crossed. Even though the driver's side door lock is now wonky! This time replacing the battery, the most difficult part was getting the battery out of the double sided plastic encasement in the packaging! Almost needed a tutorial for THAT! Thanks for this video!

I’ve referenced videos older than 4yrs but always amazes me that someone who made a video years ago is here to help me today! Car dealer is across town and watch repair guy couldn’t figure out how to open this type of fob. No one else showed how to slide the back cover off, and no one else prepared me that it might take a little working to get the old battery out. Just knowing that, kept me from thinking that I was doing something wrong. Thank you, Rob!

I found that the sliding off part I didn't need a screwdriver just push the same slider to remove the physical key and slide at the same time as I have found in the past pushing things with a screwdriver can damage things. I also used a plastic pry tool to pull the battery out and also used a guitar pick once since I don't want to scratch anything on these remotes

Thank you. The Toyota dealership here told me "I could just get this done at Wal-Mart" after I have bought two different cars from them. It is My impression they like selling cars, but don't like helping after purchase. An oil change is a two-week wait (and their garage seems to have one mechanic and starkly empty). I no longer wish to even go there. Last week they sent an email to "buy my car back." I told them everything I said here. Technically, I have purchased three vehicles, but they changed ownership.

Thank you for video, i got the 2007 Prius in early 2009 and the battery never went dead until a few days ago, about 15 years. i didn't even know they had a battery. I didn't know what was suddenly wrong with my car, called Auto Club and the guy came out and said i had a dead FOB battery, he said it was an easy fix and he showed me that i could still use it to start the car with it in the slot on the dashboard. I had spare set putof keys including the FOB so i got that and used it to lock the car with the FOB instead of having to take the key out. I even have a key from a FOB on my key chain with my other keys so i won't have to take it out of the FOB just to lock or unlock the car, but i don't know where the FOB is that goes to that key. Anyway, the two FOBs have had since this battery dead problem started---one had a working battery which could remotely unlock or lock the car and one had a dead dbattery which didn't unlock or lock the car remotely. Now they both do. What i don't understand is, when the battery went out on the one i was using all the time until it died, it allowed keyless entry and start up just by pushing the round start button, i could leave my keys in my pocket the whole time, but after the battery died, my spare FOB set could not allow the car to be started without putting the FOB in the dashboard slot. Even though both FOBs now have working batteries, neither one will open the car by touching the door handle or lock the car by pushing the button on the door handle, leaving the FOB in my pocket. I now have to take the FOB out to do that and i have to put the FOB in the dashboard slot to start the car. I used to leave my keys/FOB in my pocket all the time. Now i have to be taking them out to use them a lot. When the battery went dead, did that erase some kind of settings that have to be re-entered? I never set anything, it's always worked with keyless ignition and keyless unlocking of all 4 doors. Now, with working batteries, both FOBS open the driver door only. i looked at the Prius manual but it's not very informative and uses language i don't recognize even though it's English. It seems to not know that the car is capable of these functions. Now that i have the original FOB that i've always used working with battery again, i can see that this does not restore the functioning of the car to what it was before. i haven't googled this yet.. i don't know exactly how to put it into words. THANK YOU for very clear direct straight forward video.

If you have the black toyota symbol on the back of the fob try this: a. PRESS and HOLD the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote simultaneously for 2 seconds. RELEASE. b. PRESS and HOLD the LOCK button and hold for 2 seconds. RELEASE. The vehicle will respond by cycling the locks from LOCK to UNLOCK to indicate successful programming of the remote.

This helped a bunch! Quick tip for those having trouble sliding the piece up and off. Keep your thumb pushing that metal piece on top in and use a flat screwdriver and insert it in the line / insert of the piece you are trying to slide up. Using the help here, i just finished changing the battery on one of my fobs. Then i began taking the other one apart to change its battery. I got to unscrewing the screws, one, two, three, all good. Number 4 won't turn, acting like the cross is stripped, they're so small, it's hard to see whether it's turning but it's not coming out.. Are there any tips, any way to get that cover off? is there any way to improve the chances of getting the screw out? . The others were easy. is the fob toast because of this? One other question, after i put the first one back together, i noticed their was a thin washer that must have come out with the battery which had been such an ordeal to get out, i didn't notice the washer. So it's put back together without the washer. Is that ok? the battery isn't moving or rattling, it doesn't seem loose. i'm like, oh no, i don't want to go through all that again, taking it apart, since it's working fine. Maybe without the washer it will be easier to remove the battery next time?.... anyway, thanks for any info and all the info already contributed .

Is there a trick to making the battery stay in place? The new one juts out a little and the fob won't unlock/lock the car at all.
