G'Day Rob. Not trying to suck up to you but the only reason I have joined up with KZbin was to subscribe to your posts and so I could comment. You are a champion mate! I have watched many of your videos over the past year and found them to be very well put together, easy to follow, informative and with no BS. I have learned so much from you and have told anyone I know who'd be interested to have a look at your stuff. We live in the Perth hills and have adopted some of your ideas with our raised vegie beds and wicking boxes. Just finished building a chook palace for 3 or 4 lucky chooks and saw how you made both the feeders and nipple drippers. I love making something rather than just going out and buying it. I made this a few days ago and the pigeons have not found the pallets yet, so its saving pallets already. The 3 chickens they have found it easy to use as well. What a great device.

+Andrew McDermott Nice one Andrew. Have found that the pigeons have to make do with the small amount that ends up on the ground here. I don't mind them cleaning it up as it's less food out to attract rodents. Have a great one.

If i just feed the chickens pallets, their less likely to flick out the food. Apart from the local pigeon, I only have a few sparrows taking the food. The only thing I would change would be the size of the bucket, I would prefer it a bit taller to fit a whole bag of chicken pallets :-) I think Its awesome and already paid itself off in unwasted chicken food.

I have built two in HD buckets with rain hoods made from pipe. I'm starting on a third feeder. I'm going to add a port on the top for refilling the bucket. Getting the lids off can be a real pain in the neck. At any rate, thanks for the idea and the thorough instructions. The feeders are fast and easy to make and they work like a charm.

What a great feeder! My wife and have about 80 chickens in Southern California and with the conventional feeders we often have more waste and problems with mice. On vacation in Mexico but plan to build a 'supersize' version of this feeder with a plastic trash can this weekend! About to build our first aquaponics system also and appreciate your tips on YT for that project as well!,

Perfect feeder. Will be making these for mine for sure. Another way you may consider for preventing seed being flicked out is to fold the lower lip of the extender pipe upwards using a heat gun or similar to create the fold.

I ended up using a jar lid to make a lip. That helped stop them scratching the grain out looking for their favourite seeds. 👍

Great video again. 2 inch elbows work perfect. On round buckets a bit of silicone around the edge of the elbow where it meets the bucket holds it in place nicely.

Thanks rob, your clips are always helpful - I wish my garden looked like yours! You can also skip cutting the pipe and just create the same opening by having your timber support holding the bottom of the elbow off the floor of the feeder! One less step!

Oh running it backwards! Didn’t know that!!! I did learn that you can put a piece of tape on it but I like the backwards trick better. TWO OTHER COOL TIPS WITH PLASTIC: 1: If you happen to have some thing metal the size of the hole you’re making you could heat it up first and then just push it through and it’ll make a perfect circle without rough edges also. 2: do you seal plastic to itself this is so helpful with so many things because you don’t know how many times I’ve tried to superglue my glasses when they break but I learned on KZbin that you can use acetone from nail polish remover make sure it’s 100% acetone it works best and then dip both pieces in the acetone for a little bit until it gets a little bit like sticky Chyna… And then press them together and then let it sit for 24 hours and the plastic melts together and it’s bonded! I have to admit I haven’t tried this but it seems like it would work it makes senseBecause I’ve melted plastic with acetone before by mistake. I didn’t know it had to come in a special kind of bottle that wouldn’t mail and I put it in something else and it dissolves completely. Anyway I didn’t actually try it but all the comments in the video I seem to say it works so I thought I would share that. Thank you for making this video

I made one of these. I used only scrap pieces of PVC lying around. The angle ended up being a 30 degree angle but it worked out fine. I did have to take out some bigger holes in the end, I expect because I'm feeding them pellets as opposed to grit/powder. No spilling, no mice that I can see, happy laying chooks! They understood within minutes how it worked. I also made a waterer. 4 nipples on the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, this took them a bit longer to find out, perhaps 7 days to switch from the open bucket to the nipples. I put peanut butter on the nipples to help direct their attention. Damn that feels weird to write, but yeah... :P

Your chicken feeder is great! Think about your chicken waterers, too. You can still use the same square bucket for the water, or smaller, if you wish, but put these "horizontal" chicken nipples on it. You can see these chicken nipples by looking on ebay or a web search for horizontal chicken nipples. Use maybe two (or three?) chicken nipples on each side of the bucket using a drill to make the holes and screw them in with teflon tape. I think these horizontal nipples are better than the hanging round ones because the chickens just peck at the central button on the square ones, a little bit of water comes out and they leak less. The others are good, but I like these better.

Thanks Kathy... We have friends that used to use the cup style feeders & they had issues with dust & debris in the cups so that's why we went with the drippers instead.. nice design. May I suggest glueing the pipe offcut inside the top of the lip of the outside part of the bend. The intention is as some additional rain shielding.

We had issues with native doves feeding on the fallen grain from our old feeder. I found that they didn't have much if any to feed on after swapping to this one so they eventually stopped turning up.

Hello, I have a question. How does the feed flow to the pipe opening in a flat bottom bucket. Won't the feed that is out of reach of the chickens mold or go bad. I think this is a good idea for a feeder but I think l would add a slant of some sort to direct the feed to the pipe otherwise wouldn't you have to tilt the bucket every now and then to get the feed within reach. Or I guess you could install more pipes on the container. Just wanted your thoughts. Great video. Thanks

We never had that issue. We also gave the feeder a regular shake to see how full it was which probably stopped food sitting in one spot too long. Am glad you enjoyed the clip. Cheers & have a great one.

Hi Rob hope your doing well mate, went to Reverse Garbage today to pick up 3 square buckets to knock up a couple of these feeders. All going to plan I should be picking up six chickens Friday so it's a mad dash to get ready for them. Great design and no waste. Rob Bob, my feeder is not under a covering. How will this do in the rain? I am wondering if we get windy rain...if water will get inside and ruin the grain on bottom.

I found having the plate in the base of the pipe & a bit of a cover over the top helped stop water getting in there Jeremy. Not sure it would stop rain from a storm with a lot of wind though. You may want to try & build a larger cover to attach to the top of the feed pipe. Hope that helps some mate.

I have another solution for your 16 scattering and I was thinking of doing this for my Duck but you could put the container up on a little stepstool kind of thing and then have the mouth opening at the bottom instead of on the side at the bottom... but have it still make the right angle and going on a slight diagonal towards the ground with a At the end and then they will be eating out of that which would be trough from the bottom of the bucket ( through the center of the store or just any kind of stand to get the bucket off off the ground you can even put like blocks of wood or cinderblocks )down to the ground so you would need a longer PVC pipe making a ramp to the ground.....and then for the trough drill either holes for their beaks or I think I would do just a sliver off the side of the trough to make it open for the ducks to go up and down it with their bill for chickens I think I would do circles with my whole drill ... and the bucket doesn’t need to be a pie or anything it just needs to be a little bit high so that you can fit the L underneath and it makes a ramp and automatically will refill as they eat ...does that make sense I hope it does because I’ll probably never happen gonnasee any responses

Pretty well actually after we made our first one a friend seen it and bought it. Lol we used a 1 gallon ice cream bucket and it was cool but a little small for all of our birds. I'm going to use a 15 gallon storage tote this time around. I just need to buy 4 more elbows and we will be good to go. When it's done I'll post a video and tag you in it so you can see what I got.

I've used your idea here in the U.S. I used round 5gal. bucket, and found that using a hot glue gun inside and out works great. I simply hang it from the co-op roof. thanks again!

I love this design for food, do you think that you can make a water similar to this also with maybe a PVC pipe chimney to fill it? I am making a portable chicken tractor and the nipple feeder isn't good pick for this project

Yes I did! Maybe I should make a video. It's working very well. I am using your grain bucket design, but the sprinkler still hits it occasionally so I need to make a water guard for the last two corners. The whole thing cost me under $100 and is 10ft. by 4 ft and holds 4 hens. I move it several times a day and put any treats or dirt bath in front of it before I move it up. I need to get bigger wheels next spring, but it's been working great and the hens are very happy. We have the best looking yard in the neighborhood 😉.

Hi there.. We still get the native doves & pigeons coming into the coup but don't have any issues with sparrows here really.. I find the doves/pigeons pick through any of the scraps that the chooks spill which isn't much any more so really isn't an issue.. Might be different with smaller birds that can get into the feeder port itself.. Would like to know how it goes if you decide to built one.. Cheers & have a great one.. Rob..

I was wondering, is there a way to stack the two (water and food) so it doesn't take twice the space? My first thoughts were to put the feeder at the bottom, with the water storage on top and pbc pipes running from the water storage down to the feed storage, coming to rest in-between the food holes ending in water nipples. So the end result would be a food hole and a water nipple all the way around. The issue I see is maybe the water being to much weight or dampening the feed (possible leaks). Any ideas to make this happen?

Chris Wright Hey Chris. Could be done but you'd still need access to the feed drum to fill it. I have our water reservoir set outside the pen now with a 20mm/¾" hose running to the dripper stations, kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJPZomp7etyIsNE You could set something like that up & run the hose/pipe to the feed barrel/bucket. Hope that helps some.

Hi Rob. Saw your feeder design and built 2 of them with 2 elbows in each one. After putting them into service for a week or so, I have a question for you. Do you have roosters? My hens figured things out fairly quickly and are eating ok, and I do appreciate no food spillage! But my 2 big roos seem to be starving. They try to put their heads in but just seem to get frustrated. I am wondering with their big chests whether their necks are long enough to reach the food or if they are just terrorized by not being able to see while feeding. Today I was filling the pails and the two of them were frantically trying to reach the food I was pouring in as if they are virtually starving. Any ideas? Thks Frank

Hi Frank.. No roosters here due to zoning laws.. Are the roosters much taller than the hens ? Am wondering if that could be part of the problem too as it may be difficult for them to get down that low.. Would like to know how you get on with it mate..

***** Round buckets work fine. Use silicone or other like product to secure pvc to bucket. 2 inch fittings are cheaper and work great

Is crazy the difference in prices I've seen between countries Jaiye. If we want to buy a new 20L bucket with lid they cost about $14 AUD. Have seen others pick them up new for a few $. Hope the feeder build went well if you had a crack at it.

It works great in my layer chicken tractor. Only issue i didnt think of beforehand is during rain water running down the sides of the bucket and getting in but a little silicon solved that.

Hi Lee.. With ours I found having it on 2 cinder/besser blocks was enough to keep the mice out of the feeder itself but know that doesn't suit all as some folks have the shorter breeds.. I made sure that the feed ports have no ledges under them for the mice to walk on as well.. If they still get in you could add some mesh to the inside of the pipe work at the back that is large enough to let the feed fall through but keep the rodents out.. That will keep them out of the main section of the feeder at least but still isn't ideal.. Hope that helps a bit & you can sort something out.. Would like to know how you get on if that's alright.. We don't have sparrows here but did have native pigeons coming in to eat the feed the chooks knocked out onto the ground. This feeder stopped a lot of the feed spillage from happening & we saw a reduction in the amount of pigeons we saw in the pen. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hi there. I fill the feeder with a gain mash here that also includes a few pellets, molasses & trace elements the birds need. Not sure what available in other countries but was told a similar mix is available in the States if that helps.

Hey there, I'm for sure gonna make one of these. I have just one question: how mice/rat proof is this? I'm planning to hang this from the top of my chicken coop. It seems like a great option and it definitely should prevent the spillage that I have trouble with now. RobBobs Backyard Farming Yeah, I've been scrounging parts for the past few days. Im gonna use a round bucket and the biggest diameter hole drill I could find. Its gonna be a smaller version because I have only 3 chickens and use a movable circular chook dome that I rotate over 6 circular veggie beds. The chooks take care of the weeds, poop all over the place and turn out some great eggs! :D I also ordered a couple of those drinking nipples that they can pack (sp?) at and drink without mucking up their water.

+Ralph Kluge Hi Ralph. I left it at the rear to make it easier to attach the block of wood that's used to help hold the fitting in place. You could leave a bit at the front to see if you could do the same by using small bolts to attach it to the front of the feeder under the hole. Hi Sashi.. The straight elbows should be easy enough to find in the plumbing section of the big box stores.. There are loads of folks that have made them with the straight ones in this clip.. I know the flanged fittings can be hard to find though.. Cheers.
