Plasma table setup issues: Excessive amperage or low standoff can also cause low-speed dross. (Some low speed dross in the corners of a plasma cut is normal since velocity does not remain constant through a sharp turn). To eliminate low speed dross: Increase the cut speed in 5 ipm increments Increase the standoff in 1/16 increments or 5 volt increments Decrease the amperage in 10 amp increments If none of these measures improve the cut, consider a smaller nozzle size - High standoff or low amperage (for a given material thickness and cutting speed) can also cause high speed dross since both of these changes cause a reduction in the energy of the plasma jet. To eliminate high speed dross: Check the nozzle first for signs of wear (gouging, oversize or elliptical orifice) Decrease the cutting speed in 5 ipm increments Decrease the standoff in 1/16 increments or 5 volts increments Increase the amperage (but do not exceed 95% of the nozzle orifice rating) - To eliminate top spatter dross: Check the nozzle for signs of wear Decrease the cutting speed in 5 ipm increments Decrease the standoff in 1/16 increments or 5 volt increments - The window varies with plasma gas used: For example, nitrogen and air plasma gasses have a relatively narrow dross free window on carbon steels while oxygen plasma has a wider dross free window. (Oxygen plasma gas reacts with carbon steel to produce a finer spray of molten metal, each droplet having a lower surface tension. This molten spray is more easily ejected from the kerf). - To judge the optimum cutting speed: Method 1: make a series of test cuts at various cutting speeds and choose the speed that produces the cleanest cut. Lag lines (small ridges in the surface of the cut) are a good indication of cutting speed. Slow cutting speeds produce vertical lag lines that are perpendicular to the plane of the plate. Fast cutting speeds make slanted s-shaped lag lines that run parallel to the plate along the bottom edge. By examining the lag lines the operator can determine whether an increase or decrease in speed is needed to find the dross free window. Many operators have the tendency to slow the machine down at the first appearance of dross, but often an increase in speed is necessary. Method 2: watch the arc (through the appropriate welding lens) during the cut and dynamically change the speed to produce the optimum arc characteristics. To do this, observe the angle of the arc as it exits the bottom of the work-piece. If you're cutting with air plasma gas, the arc should be vertical as it exits the bottom side of the cut. With nitrogen or argon/hydrogen, a slight trailing arc is best, and with oxygen plasma gas, the best cut speed is one that gives you a slight leading arc. - Do some studying on what your settings and consumables; maybe these points were not considered on setup, just get it running. Make list with As Found, As left #1, As Left #2 etc. until you get it dialed in for the metal thicknesses and material types. Save those parameters as different settings if you can, maybe that will save you headaches in the long term. Good Luck! www.hypertherm.com/en-US/support/system-support/maintenance-and-use/cut-quality/too-much-dross/

What you should do with the chain links: melt them into the old grill in the same spots and send it back to the people who donated that good grill, signed by you and Matt and Fab Rats, so they can hang it in the same place on their wall. EDIT - Also get Ed's signature somehow, maybe wait til after reveal. And another thought - everyone should sign the new grill that goes on Eds car. Maybe put some clearcoat over the top

@@RobbyLayton That down slag is most than likely cutting speed related. Try reducing the speed of the cutter by small increment and compare results. Might have to lower the torch a wee bit too but start trying reducing speed a little and see where it goes. When its cutting too slow, it makes wider cuts and more down slag. To fix it, raise the torch, or increase speed a little bit every time until you're happy with your cut

If steel is water quenched, it can cool too fast and become hard, but brittle. Metal cooled slowly, or correctly quenched can be hardened without the brittle issue. You can water quenched unimportant pieces so you can handle them, but with important pieces that will see a load, you should avoid water quenching.

the simple answer is that heating metal expands the molecules, when you go from hot to cold quickly by quenching the metal the molecules will be set tighter together thus making the metal harder. however hardness does not equate to strength. in the case of knives they can be very easy to snap after quenching. the next step in the process is to temper the metal by heating it gently until you see your temper colors which range from straw or gold being the first colors to appear, to blue and purple, the final colors which indicate softer metal.

The thing with metallurgy is way complex. Heating and cooling both change molecular structure, hardness and strength. Hardness is tolerance of deformation and ability to hold an edge, often resulting in brittleness. Strength is generally softer less able to hold edge, more likely to bend than break. Full since of changing composition of metals alloys and carbon content.

Metal strength and hardness are two different things. Quenching something to make it harder could also make it brittle. But it depends on the metal alloy.
@laurelrowe5536
@laurelrowe5536 2 жыл бұрын
It also depends on the consistency of the quenching liquid. Oil is used because it quenches metal even all the way through; whereas water makes the surface brittle and may leave the interior of the metal soft.
@haroldshobbies
@haroldshobbies 2 жыл бұрын
They are working with low carbon steel, so quenching doesn’t do too much. It can change it a little bit, but not enough to make a difference. Like you said. It depends on the alloy.
@CapitalCreators
@CapitalCreators 2 жыл бұрын
@@laurelrowe5536 thats false, oil and water have different rates at which they are able to absorb heat. Because of there differing specific heat capacity water cools more rapidly than oil and increases hardness.
@John_B_Fab
@John_B_Fab 2 жыл бұрын
Ok, i'll educate a few here... Quenching metal in water isnt good at all in anyway shape or from, planet, dimension, whatever. Just don't. Only thing you will achieve using water is distort or cause cracking inside the metal. End of the story. Low carbon steels and low hardenability alloys will quench a lot better in fast oils while highly hardenable alloys quench better in hot oils gonig from 90F to about 400-425F depending on the metal or application. Y'all welcome ;) Been forging knives swords and damascus as a hobby for a few years now... you learn a lot about metal types, grades, properties and what do what if you do this or that. Im a guy who like doing tests, try and learn.
@bobber55
@bobber55 2 жыл бұрын
@@John_B_Fab I agree 100%. While they're giving themselves a high five, they need to look up quenching weldments like I have seen them doing in other videos. I am just old school and old. Been welding before they were even born and first thing taught was never quench a hot weld.
@antimatter4733
@antimatter4733 2 жыл бұрын
For the knife thing, you can quench a blade in oil or water, depending on the steel, water will harden the blade more but also increase the risk of cracking due to the thermal shock. If you want it really hard you can cryo quench it in water or oil below 0 degrees Celsius. But all that only works on steel that contains enough carbon.

I love how Robby wants to keep as much of the original history with the car. Even the two chain links that came off the donor grill.

There's a difference between "toughness" and "hardness" in any material. Toughness is the ability to deform without breaking or "plasticity". Hardness is the resistance to deformation. When quenching (tempering) high carbon steel, you're trading toughness for hardness. Ideally you could case harden, then you get a compromise.

Couldn’t you bake it for an hour or two in a residential oven set on high? Wouldn’t that temper it some?
