Huge HUGE HUUUUUGE thank you to everyone watching out for me in the comments. I clearly don’t know everything. And I’m just trying to do anything in my power to make this thing stable in the time I’ve been given. Thank you for the guidance on quenching as well as any other safety issues. Even the conversations between everyone is well appreciated as I can see where I’m supposed to be focusing my effort.

If your really worried about the flexibility of... I'm a steel guy lol then you might want to get everything that you weld steel wise heat treated. Or normalized which ever you prefer to call it. When we weld things at work on the rail cars to the tank itself we have to do what we call stressing. Because the welds tend to shrink some as they cool off if you don't do that they will break or crack over time because naturally they already have a crap ton of force on them just from being there... Also another good way to do it is preheating the parts to around 200 or just over to make the stress alot less. I've only been welding 10 years now but I'ma try hard lol you know all about that #Rob dahm

Yep. Even though the person who does an annual/100hr aircraft inspection may also be the mechanic fixing the things found by the inspector, you need to be thinking differently. Just in case, do me a favor and be careful when quenching hot metal (running hot/freshly welded parts under a sink to cool them off). It tends to make them harder which also makes them more brittle (Something shocks the piece and instead of the material flexing, it can crack/break). I did that a lot in the past myself and really didn't have much issue, but just something to keep in mind; especially with any thinner parts or things under a lot of stress. Love the detail you're putting into everything and how you're doing pretty much everything yourself!

Yeah definitely don't want to cool aluminium after welding. It can crack if cooled too quickly after welding. It will start to crack at the start or end of the weld or if there are any impurities like dipping your tungsten.
@TekamsTheOne
@TekamsTheOne 4 жыл бұрын
From being Aluminium I would say cooling it down faster, apart from creating tensions from rapid cooling also probably makes it weaker! Aluminum weld are always weaker then the base metal due to loss of the heat treatment, am cooling it down quickly probably makes it loose even more. But nothing like searching some papers!
@moejoe987654321
@moejoe987654321 4 жыл бұрын
@@evilblackcat6357 tldr - Yeah, if it's gonna snap it'll snap where he quenched it. Processes like welding will almost always get hot enough to effect the temperament of the metal, regardless of if they are cast/forged/billet. The actual temp the metal got to and how big of an area of the metal was at that temp are major factors. You would really want to bring the entire piece back to it's "base" temperature properties (annealing) then reheat to the heat range (and cool accordingly) corresponding to the material properties you want.
@BennyBoo9080
@BennyBoo9080 4 жыл бұрын
11:43 preheat the big chunk if you’re welding to a much thinner piece, let it cool slowly (I know it’s too tempting sometimes) to avoid cracks forming... don’t want to sound like a ‘know it all’ here just a few things I was told that helped me.

I would have got shouted at for water cooling a weld. Also triangulation. All those parts seemed to be one bit sticking out from another just joined along one edge. Triangulate along at least two edges and you've made a 3d part from flat parts. Think bending a paper clip back and forth...

On your tie-rod connection: I would be less worried about the attachment to the upright/knuckle, and more worried about the sheet metal that the tie rod actually attaches to. It looks like 11ga (0.120")? I would feel much safer with some 7ga (0.179") or better. The 2 big-ass bolts holding it to the knuckle are very unlikely failure points IMO. PS your build is awesome and so are you.

Cool! It's a good reminder for even the most experienced builder that things can be missed - one can only hope you caught them all. Re: the bolts coming through the wheel bearing carrier - that's about perfect, rule of thumb is 1 1/2 threads throught nuts and plates. There are times when, with a recessed bolt head like that, one uses longer bolts, to allow for drilling through the end and a split pin (or R clip) to be put through it, so even if it does loosen the split pin will stop it backing right out.

Only had put on about 4,000 miles and the metal had fatigued. I looked at the broken piece and wondering what I was thinking to use such a thin tube at such a critical piece? Rebuilt using 4x stronger material. Go over every piece and examine them to see if they are strong enough and over engineered.

So, I have not taken the time to read through the posts, but the first thing that concerned me was the steering attach mount that you commented on. PLEASE, create some form of gusseting/bracing across the outboard side of both ‘legs’ of the bracket that reaches vertically up past the upper mounting bolt. I believe you’ll gain a lot of strength in both directions by doing so. You can afford the weight ‘penalty’.... I’m an old school Rotary guy from when I was in High School (1984), and my first car was a one owner, University Mazda (Seattle- first dealership in the states) purchased/serviced 73 RX2 2 door. Love your enthusiasm, and willingness to take chances, and share all this with us! Digging the shop cats, too. They are worth the investment, both rodent and enjoyment-wise.

Apart from preheat which would have helped you greatly another trick is to have a bottle of welding grade Helium and mix it with the Argon or even use it 100% and it makes for a much hotter arc.

Rob on the welding table to your right is the propane torch when welding such a thick piece you take the torch and pre-heat the bigger piece and then you will have more than enough amps to really get it to penetrate into the aluminum vs being frosty and maybe barely even penetrating. it's important piece that double shear bracket good thing you welded it but looks kinda thin lol kinda sketch lol

Hi Rob, in the future if you are going to weld large pieces of Aluminum, you should be pre heating the Aluminum with a torch. That will help with you welding problems, that is how it is supposed to be done. I suggest you try it when you do the opposite side, we use either a torch, or if we have several large pieces we preheat them in an oven. Try it you will see what I mean, but wear full welding gear to protect yourself from burns. Also allow the aluminum to cool down for 30 minutes before quenching with hot water.

HI rob. if you want to drill hole and your depth perfect using your mill. Lock the top part of your mill(dont use your hand to lower it). When you extend the cylinder down to drill you lose precision.Then use lever to move the table up or down while using your digital reader. this will be very precise. Hope it makes sense. frenchy here.

If youre going for a vehicle that will pass the test of time, One of the issues you need to be aware of is Galvonic Corrosion. i.e. One of the failsafes you welded was steel bolted to aluminum. Wont be a problem any time soon, but will brittle the metal over time

I love the music montages Rob - I know they're more laborious to edit (as I do it myself), but they're very peaceful, or exciting, or just satisfying, all depending on the time and tempo. It ads a good touch of production quality and makes your videos feel like a movie :) Consider doing it more often? It gets easier each time 👍Even just small ones are fun and entertaining for viewers

Rob, you should put a thread insert, aka Heli-Coil in the threads for the heim joints. Would make that part much more serviceable without the worry of stripping the threads. Keep up the good work.

@@smurdoch333 I was operating a horizontal boring mill with loose fitting coveralls on. My sleeve was caught by the spinning tool. This yanked me off my feet and wrapped my arm around the spindle breaking the bones in my arm in 12 different places. It also broke the bones in my wrist. All of this happened in less than a second.The only reason the machine did not tear my arm off was I was able to kick the machine into neutral as it drug me in. I have been a machinist for over 35 years. Up until this accident, I had never been hurt bad enough to get stitches let alone having to stay in the hospital for a week. If I had been wearing gloves the results could have been the same. Fabric and leather around your arms and wrists are places the machine can grab you. This happens so fast its over before you realized it began. This can kill you. The mill I was operating was a 30 hp unit turning a fairly slow 1250 rpms with a 6 inch shell mill tool.. That is a fairly stout HP level. You can get your arm ripped off with 5hp. Machines never forget how to kill you. Its up to you to be safe and never give them a chance to. Do not wear long sleeves or gloves while operating machine tools. I regret that I can say this from personal experience. Dont make the same mistake I did.

Idk what aluminum alloy/s you are using for the upright and sheet you welded to it, but there are so many different types of aluminum filler that could help or hurt you. Hobart has a good pdf that I use to spec filler, and in terms of safety I would hate for your weld material to become brittle/fatigue overtime. Lincoln Electric has some good literature about aluminum too, but the main concern with aluminum welding is that the weld will rarely be as strong as parent material, idk by how much and if it’s life threatening. If you are concerned though, I’d consider post weld heat treatment to try and uniform the material properties from the weld/HAZ to the parent material. Love the build, Rob, you’re and inspiration to so many people!!
