You missed out one of his more interesting connections to West Lothian, which was his friendship with Henry Erskine, the Lord Advocate. Erskine, himself a fascinating character, owned Almondell House, where he, Burns and the painter Alexander Nasmyth would drink and debate long into the night. Almondell House was demolished in 1969, but the grounds are now Almondell Country Park, by East Calder.

🙄The closest Burns got to where I live was Inveraray, on his tour. He arrived unannounced, and the Duke had a full, newly built Castle as he had a Fishery Society event that day. Burns, disgusted at the audacity of someone rejecting him, retired to the new town's inn and penned: WHOE'ER he be that sojourns here, I pity much his case, Unless he comes to wait upon The Lord their God, His Grace. There's naething here but Highland pride, And Highland scab and hunger: If Providence has sent me here, 'Twas surely in his anger.
