I am mixed blood Ulster Scott. My family setteled in South Eastern Kentucky, in the mountains. One of our cabins, that mamaw and papaw lived in, was built in 1770. Growing up they didnt have running water until after they passed and my Great Uncle moved in and ran water to the cabin in the last ten years. They didnt get to attend school past second grade but they were the smartest cleanest folks you could ever meet. They rode horses until the 50's when my papaw came back from Korea and bought a jeep. The other side of my family were Cherokee and Creek hideouts from the forced removal west. I am an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. The Scotts Irish were able to adapt to the native people that lived beside them and they got along well because like the tribes they were clanish people and they understood each other. Alot of Scotts Irish were actually adopted members of the tribes. When I look at the hills my ancestors farmed, and placed their lives upon, I am amazed. Most of the rich settlers that were able to buy flat perfect farming grounds, they thought my ancestors were going to die of starvation, but here I am, almost two hundred years later, and only because my ancestors were tough, hardworking folks that never quit. I am a proud Cherokee/ Creek Scotts Irish Hillbilly.

We see no other life and enjoy the challenges to stay alive. We can live with ourselves for as long as we enjoy good company....ourselves. women are a burden and reserved for children. Not to mention the Scots and English chased the French out of L'Acadie, along with many natives and mixed couples and children. The land grabs were the worst of all...many families were chased off their land or forced into treaties that were unfair. No white man could have survived without the aid of natives, many who invited them onto the land to show them how to get their furs and showed them the places they needed to go to survive. What an incredible story. There is a strange similarity in this story to what we see often in modern society. It is that many times we see a hard working person that becomes wealthy and raises a family, only to see the offspring become wealthy from inheritance. The offspring often do not do anything noteworthy on their own and many times they don't even raise a family. The chances that they were all homosexual is small, perhaps it is just that they become spoiled and selfish.?.? Of course, there can be many other reasons for this but it is something we see today as well. Robert Campbell was quite an interesting man that we don't hear enough about in history.

i don't see it that way at all. the last brother died intestate almost certainly knowing that the fortune would go to his closest living relatives. most of whom would live around Ulster. whats more fair than that? they didn't go begging for anything. the ones who inherited were chosen by a court of law.

I think we could tread lightly before romanticizing a life such as this. In the research I have done about Early Frontier life I have found nothing easy, neat and tidy about these mens lives. Life was a daily grind of hard work and hyper vigilance. You can also forget that "noble savage" crap from films such as "Dances with Wolves". Native Americans were the product of generations of subsistence and survivalist living and were canny business people when required. Just sayin.
@AZTLANSOLDIER135 жыл бұрын
Kind of miss the point on both accounts. The hardship CAN and is romanticized. And the noble savage? I'm native and I can tell you my people were noble and I have no problem using the word savage.

I'm glad they used the correct term ULSTER SCOTS!

They were never known as Ulster Scots or Scots -Irish at that time. They were known simply as Irish until the influx of Catholic Irish during the Irish famine. Those presbyterians from Ireland in general hated the English but did not want to be classified as the same people who came to America from Ireland during the famine years there

This is a truly excellent video setting out this man's exciting and successful life. I really enjoyed it. The only point I'd offer, by way of a constructive comment, is that it doesn't really explain how he made the jump from his mountain trapping activities to achieving business and social pre-eminence. I was left wondering whether he slowly and methodically saved his profits from leading his own mountain group, or whether during his mountain phase, he had made a few judicious investments which bore fruit, in a timely manner, thus allowing him to switch at the right moment, from one way of life to another. Maybe the written records fail to chart the course of his financial rise and we are left to fill in the details using sensible guesses. Anyway it is a an excellent video. Greetings from Suffolk, England.

You wouldn't think it but being a mountain man, especially one who takes initiative and bares common sense, which not only extends your life but exposes you to important people. People in business, trade and entrepreneurs. The documentary mentioned that he sensed the decline of trapping and that he held stock in railroads. If being a trapper or mountain man, you didn't squander your pay in drinking and gambling, you could close the season with some real green backs.
