This piece of the film here is a rollercoaster ride. I felt different kinds of chills watching this part. Denzel is able to do such a terrifying character so well, absolutely love his character in 'Equalizer' and 'The Book of Eli' Polite, jovial, stern, and sociopathic all bleeding in and out of each with fantastically paced transitions, it's elegant and stressful at the same time. About the only other characters I can think of with such an intimidating presence where you're on edge anytime they're interacting with another person would be Anton Chigurh and Hans Landa with the only difference being that Denzel's character is this story's "hero".

He really was preparing them. I think what happened to them was going to happen as soon as they stepped foot into that restaurant. That hand grip/hold he put on him showed that him Mcall had some sort of combat training. When he told him to put the gun on the table, the said "slowly" in Italian showed his intelligence and that he knew everything that was said during the conversation with the officer. After he released the hold and motioned the bad guy to leave it was basically telling him to go get ready.

this movie does an absolutely great job at showing his character's haunting past of him having been a killer. that was the thing the bourne movies really tried to build up narratively but failed. this is the dark side of someone who has been a professional assassin for a long time. because if you're that good at it - it also must mean you enjoy it in some way. they made such a good choice to show this aspect consistently. He's a guy who dislikes violence from a default position but once it's time to get on it like a frenzy he loves it and visibly savors it, and then he hates himself for it. the character of Robert is by FAR the best in 3 - it's just that the context, goal and villains in this movie are a bit too removed from the story as a whole. there's a bit of a lack of a personal connection running throughout the whole script. all the characters are brought in and out in a way that's a bit too artificial just to get the protag moving. but still a good movie imo.

The first two movies showed a man trying to do right and “live” while struggling with the grief of losing his wife. Even in 2, even with revenge on his mind, he seemed to be mostly going through the motions of “living”. In here, you see him touch Death after getting shot. You see him accept he was going to die. He even tried to kill himself at the vineyard. But after Gio and Enzo save him, and the community open their doors to him, he found his purpose. And he finally went on a “date”, showing his healing from grief is finally coming to a head. That line “I’m where I’m supposed to be” isn’t just Enzo preaching Gospel, but a personal declaration that he’ll keep living and use what he has to protect this place of love and tranquility. I just wish we could see this side of him more. But seeing Denzel kicking ass is always fun. Addendum: this is the first time we see him eat dinner with someone, not just Enzo, but Aminah. We see him join the town for movie night, have fun with the kids and old granny. He's finally opened up to others, and not just one off them as a Lyft driver, or just keep it as "work buddies", or mentor someone. Also, isn't it weird to finally have him be a housemate, rather than a usual empty apartment we normally see him live in? Also, HE ALMOST FORGOT IS SPOON IN THE END! Mr. Neat and Tidy stood up, was walking away from the cafe, and Aminah reminds him of his spoon. To join in the town's celebration...

Yes! Your comment is perfect. When Mcall said "3 weeks ago we wouldn't be having this conversation," I think he meant there would have been no forewarning, the bad guys would have just been killed. But because all these good experiences have been happening, he wanted to give them a chance, which lead to the statement, "So, please! Whatever it is that you and friends do, do it somewhere else!" When, he got the arrogant laugh and "You warning me?" as a response, their fate was sealed.

The music..sends cold and shiver to those who listened. Its so angelic, yet it isn't warm and soothing. Its cold and dangerous.

This entire movie, when he's on the hunt, he's like a horror movie killer, but his victims aren't stupid teenagers, they are ruthless mafiosi. He hunts them still the same and invokes the same sense of terror.

Precisely: Vincent Quaranta isn't much different from Robert McCall - as both are "men of violence" - along with enforcer Marco, Vincent's younger brother. The latter ain't no 'street punk' (like those in Death Wish 2 and 3), he's intimidating and that's putting it mildly - either way, both brothers (as McCall said) make it "very challenging" for him. Not easy to defeat!.

I love that Robert McCall is basically The Punisher without an actual superhero/vigilante suit, but he is for all intents and purposes a superhero vigilante.

Robert McCall has to be one of the most complex characters i would have to say in all of film, that I’d ever seen. To be that compassionate, loving & protective of the common citizen, friend, colleague whatever & then to be that heartless & violent to bad people & feel nothing is a new phenomenon to me. It’s an extremely tricky role he’s playing. Very complex. Idk it’s so weird, he’s a good hearted, morally intact.. sociopath? Idk. Man these movies are good 👀. The violence is a bit much but they are so good

Smooth…makes him scream like a b1tch, disarms him, then grants permission to leave. McCall knew he would react with anger and embarrassment and look for immediate retribution. That’s why he took his gun at the table. They were so preoccupied with planning the revenge and worrying more about the reaction of Vincent than actually accomplishing what they were setting out to do, they were careless, and allowed Robert to sneak up on them when that was the last thing they expected at that moment. The best part for me was after he systematically, isolated the punk leader. He was scared. You could see it in his face as he pulled the knife and charged him, knowing that just a few minutes before, he was compelled to give in to this man and lose face in front of all the people he regularly intimidated.
