Poet laureate Robert Frost recites "Choose Something Like a Star," "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," "Away," and "Lines Written in Dejection on the Eve of Great Success" for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Dwight D. Eisenhower during "An American Pageant of the Arts," on November 29, 1962. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the National Cultural Center, begun under Eisenhower's administration and encouraged under Kennedy's.
Two months after President Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, Congress passed and President Johnson signed into law legislation renaming the National Cultural Center as a "living memorial" to John F. Kennedy.

Robert Frost was an American poet known for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech. Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime and is the only poet to receive four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He became one of America's rare "public literary figures." He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1960 for his poetic works. On July 22, 1961, Frost was named poet laureate of Vermont.

Robert Frost reflects a time in our nation when we were more civilized, sophisticated, and well-educated. The dumbing down of America has produced such an illiterate nation that sometimes I am ashamed to call myself an American.
