The Authority On All Things R&B !
On this week’s episode of The R&B Money Podcast, Tank and J Valentine sit down with the extraordinary Robert Glasper for an eye-opening look at his musical journey.
Robert shares incredible stories of his meteoric rise as a teen musical phenomenon, including backing up famous artists before even graduating high school. Glasper reminisces about the challenges of breaking through in jazz and R&B, as he shares tales of disastrous gigs, backstage drama, and wild nights over his decades-long career. He also argues passionately for greater recognition of Black artists in these genres by the music establishment.
Glasper offers insight into how some of his Grammy-winning albums came together through impromptu collaborations with legends like Bilal and Prince. From the church piano to studio sessions with icons, Glasper gives listeners a backstage pass into his world. For music fans and aspiring artists alike, this episode is a masterclass in creativity, resilience, and sustaining a genre-bending career.

I actually believe he is the most transformational artist of the last 2 decades. Caught a glimpse of him after his second album at London's Ronnies Scott. There and then, he was going to win a Grammy. I remember chatting with him, Derrick Hodge, and Chris Dave at the Bar of that Club.

Love that Glasper said that most times when you record an album, the best version of those songs come *after* the album’s recorded. *So true* . I hear live versions of Beyoncé or Jazmine songs all the time that top the original recording. The things you discover with a live band are just different. Some artists might need to rethink their recording process 🤯

By the by, I just learned the intro of Tanks “Self Esteem” on the “While You Wait” EP, and the chord progression is dope. There are some passing chords that show up intermittently, but I usually have a harder time finding those chords because I don’t know what they are (I can’t read music - BUT IM COMMITTED TO LEARNING!!). Usually the bass note is in a weird place. But there was something that came up in this episode regarding the utilization of space, and listening to the cadence in “Self Esteem” in reference to the chord progression is so simple in essence, but Tank’s delivery dope! “You Never Knew” is actually my favorite track on the EP. Chord chart will be arriving soon and I’ll be learning to read scores. Thanks again!!

Glasper has dang near mastered blending different facets of black music...black music is extremely deep...jazz/blues and gospel being the roots. Then you bring R&B, hiphop, rock, country, ect...you have endless possibilities...🤷🏾

The way I almost ruined my MacBook by spitting out my water when Tank and Robert starting arguing in instrument sounds during the top 5 🤣Then Tank has no sense at all making those animal sounds while eating the 😸 I. CAN. NOT. P.S. I'm glad they were safe to say Robert, too 🤣The episode was SUPER good!

That guy Robert is one of those who really change the game in my opinion as far as what’s real music and what’s not in this generation of music a pioneer for. And I can’t wait to hear what he and Tank do together in the lab together peace

Robert Glasper has one of the greatest shows on earth! Saw him at City Winery in NYC on my 48th birthday with Derrick Hodge and Chris Daddy Dave. Absolutely insane! Lupe Fiasco and Immortal Technique did a tribute to Phife Dog. Craizee!

🔥🔥🔥 Episode. I love that Robert appreciate a singer that knows restraint and who tell a story. Whitney was the Queen of that, too.

I Love Robert Glasper, his music is amazing, thanks guys for having him on the Podcast. He's so down to earth, the soundtrack to the Photograph is my favorite. Thank you Robert Glasper for having Luke James on the album, he's also amazing. I'm really looking forward to hearing Tank collaborate with you.

Walking around doing chores to these episodes on tablet til recently. After K & K episode on the big screen TV from the DiPad Pro, I was amazed at the sound quality. I get to this eposide and was Soooooo glad that the TV was far away from me because had I watched it on the DiPad, oh a bath would have commenced. All my 64 Oz water was everywhere it shouldn't have been. This dude was full of life's life. Bubbly, charming, hahlariously sincere and hugely talented. Thank you J and T as well as BTS crew for the fun while learning!!
