I like how Lars pointed out that he didnt look like he was struggling to play any of the songs. Im sure it was pretty intimidating for a lot of those guys but Rob just went in there and did what he does best with ease. I also really liked that clip at the end of him jamming in that room. He's played with a lot of great bands but never really broke big. He was probably not making much at that time but he continued to do what he loved. One of the best and most accomplished bassist in the world getting his well deserved big break. Im happy for him and the direction Metallica has taken since he's joined.

He was also intimidated but he didnt let that get into his head. I see how at the end of Battery his hand is so tight he even tries to catch Lars out of sync ending. He was so focused like a sniper. and out of frustration he is like making the devil horns sign because they didnt make the ending perfect at 3:22. Jason's true talent was underutilized in Metallica. Indeed he has great energy, and is a great bassist, but having seen him perform live with his own band Newsted back in 2013 (sucks that they split up; I really enjoyed them), I think he belongs at the center of the stage singing AND playing bass, as opposed to off to the side. He's an excellent frontman, and I think he actually sounds better than James Hetfield.

@@Gregbaltzer I agree. I gave them a try. None of the songs was sticking. What people dont realize about Metallica is they are the best metal band in the world because they write METAL HITS. Other metal bands have 4-5 bangers out of 10 Albums. Metallica has 4-5 bangers on every record. Many people give them shit for not sounding great live- but they came to a level where They dont even need to play their songs well- The crowd is all sining dont even care whether anyone of them makes a mistake. They dont have that burden anymore like bands who have to prove themselves. You dont go to a MEtallica show to criticize their mastery- you go to a sing a long. James has the ear. Some people have that ability to imideately see the potential in a riff. Kirk is the virtuoso and Lars no matter that he is a meme now- still his old work is stuff of legend. James creates those catchy catchy riffs. Mustaine is a good instrumentalist but his best song is not even equal to Metallica top 10. In Metal riffs and vocal melodies is what sells and James has that gift. He has that presence where u wanna drink beer with the guy and that is a desirable trait in a frontman. Kirk and Trujilo are the Dynamos and Lars is the overal mastermind. It works. Sorry for the long post btw.

I had a cd back in the good old days, think it was called metal millitia. A tribute cd to Metallica, with many famous metal players back then collaborated and made their versions of famous Metallica songs. And yes Rob was on the battery song already back then, so he knew the song. I think it was joey Belladonna on vocals as well. I am a big siucidal tendensis fan, thats why I rememeber

Robert later said that after the first day there, Lars wanted to go get a drink, and they ended up drinking all night, and that for the audition the next day he was so hangover he had to rest somewhere, all while James was now recently sober and probably insecure about people drinking.

i love that part at the end when Lars tells Trujillo: "To show you how serious we are about this, we're going to give you a million dollars right now." And the look on Rob's face is like he won the lottery. Then all the sudden James drops in with some respectful honesty: "Actually it's an advance on some percentages." They pan back to Rob & his face says it all - 'Oh these are savvy business guys now. They're not "giving" me a million dollars. They're giving me an advance on my work to come. i wonder what else it says in that contract?' That said - getting that job still is like winning the lottery. Only thing that would've been more perfect is if Lars suddenly whipped out some paperwork & said: "By the way - here's a lawsuit you'll need to sign. Turns out you were a Metallica fan in the late 90's & you downloaded a few songs off Napster. So we're going to be suing you for that million dollar advance."

3:11 Crazy to see Kirk head banging, it isn't something that happens often, if at all, especially in tuning rooms, no offense to the other bass players, but I was able to play Bell'z base riff when I was 15 and better than what I'm hearing in this video. I've seen it before and love Lars reaction to Rob asking to play Battery to start, lol that's an old skewl fan, kick 'em in the face from go. Love it

It’s kinda like a minor leaguer getting called up to the Yankees. You say ‘wow this guy is so lucky’ but then realize how hard he worked his ass off to get to that level and realize luck had nothing to do with it. Robs legit the best bassist they had since Cliff. Still love Jason’s vocals though

100%. Jason's vocals were really great. Some songs on the records I find myself pausing half way through, and coming on youtube to find the live version with Jason's backing vocals. Also his energy was killer. He was metal through and through, definitely elevated the band live. You could even see it in the recent reunion show where Jason came on stage, their energy was a whole new level compared to the rest of the night. But yeah agree for sure, his technical playing was not as good as Robert.
