Fuel pump replacement: 2 to 3 hours ($300 / $700 / $1200)
WARNING: Check the fuel pump wire connection. If bad replace it. Our new pump burned out in 3,000 miles. PN: LNC 3360CA for a connector that can be spliced in. ($25 eBay used / $135 eBay new / $185 local).
I helped my brother replace the fuel pump in his 2003 Jaguar XJ8, X308 series. The hardest part of the job is getting the fuel lines disconnected. There are a few other parts that are hard as well, mainly things that can cause damage to the vehicle.
The 2nd time I pulled the tank, I did not have to disconnect the trunk lifts.
Pump: JLM20756 ($385+ Failed in 60 days).
Stepped hose: NND 6070AB ($85+)
This process should work on most XJ series vehicles that have the fuel tank behind the rear seat and the pump in the tank. Cars from 1998 - 2003 for sure.

Hi Robert, thank you for taking the time & trouble to make this video. Your insistence that that the two fuel lines must be removed before removing the fuel tank was particularly helpful and certainly saved damage to the lines. Steve Keeping 4.0 XJ8 2001 UK

I just did the fuel pump replacement on my 1999 XJ8. I tried to get the tank leaned forward without detaching the fuel lines underneath. One of the fuel lines broke while I was trying to get the tank forward enough to do the pump replacement. I got some rubber hose for fuel injection and put it on the steel fuel line ends with hose clamps. Working perfectly.

My Jag is a 2000 Vanden Plas, XJ8, X305, and the fuel pump went out. Although I decided to go through the package tray I found this video very helpful. I had to cut out a spot about 6 X 8 inches directly over the tank. I didn't have to remove the tank or gas lines. Thanks Robert for all your helpful videos.

AlwAys love your videos-very helpful and thorough.... I ended up cutting an L in the rear deck panel to remove the fuel pump. Made life much easier but not recommended.... I tached a couple of welds when I was done and have been enjoying life since(did this a couple of years ago!)-until of course the pump burned up again.... will get an oem one this time-will try to find one for $200 something like you did!

Exactly like my wife's 1996 XJ6 Van den plas. I put in the second pump. I got an original pump brand and model fuel pump from Napa for ≈$200. and it was a beast of a job to do. I pumped the fuel out of filler neck instead of from the fuel filter, a better idea. It won't start now and it might be the third (just months old, replaced by others) that is the current problem. We will try to pass a small arm over the tank. We are going to remove the nut that holds the pump. Then you just need to disconnect the collar and the pipe. Maybe we can do it without dismantling the tank. I'll tell you when I've done Robert.

we managed to change the pump by passing the arm into the tank without dismantling. Just by removing the hatch on it. On the other hand, when we transferred the gasoline into the tank we had an incident. A spark on the battery terminal... The car caught fire. It's a real shame because the repair was completed and the pump was working.@@RobertDIY

Thanks robert for the very good video. I decided to seal my tank as there was some surface rust inside. I did not now there was a check valve inside the tank, on the filler tube. sealant blocked it. I had to get a new tank !!! Do you know if this part is critical for good functioning of car ? I am struggling to reconnect the fuel lines (I changed the 2 connectors on tank) and I am not able to have them clicked ! Does the pipe collar need to click into the connector ? Definitely the worse experience I ever had !

Thank you so much for sharing this.... I just sealed my gas tank and I masked off the filler neck that extends into the tank that contains the anti-siphon check ball. I also masked off the return hose and spout next to base of fuel pump as well fuel line from fuel pump. I mixed the red coat for about 30 mins then rotated it and let it drain. The red kote looked tacky so removed the tape easily. It’s ready to go back in at this point. I also ended up lowering the rear suspension and differential-took about an hour and made life very easy with regard to disconnecting the fuel lines.

Hi Robert - another question: I ran the car out of gas and the fuel pump wouldn't function. I added fuel tank cleaner, let it sit for 24 hrs and got the fuel pump working again. That said, I am cycling through fuel filters to evacuate the sludge (tank cleaner is enzyme based). I noticed when I turn the car on and it's idyling, if I run the engine up to 3K it starts to cough and buck. I presuming if I continue with replacing fuel filters a comple of time more the eproblem should subside when I get the kunk out (I know the additive is working as the filter is at least an ounce heavier after draining). Do you think the coughing and bucking is still fuel pump related even though it's working? Thanks!

Running out of fuel should not damage the fuel pump unless it was already weak and dying. I would read the codes with a code reader.

I can get the quick release tool on the fuel lines below the tank and even hear “clicks” when I push in. Also using a long tire iron to press in the on the quick release tool. The problem is that for the life of me I can’t pull the fuel line out. Is it just a matter of pulling hard enough or is there another secret? Thanks and fantastic video.

Is there any way to loosen the tank in the trunk and slowly bend forward (or backward) to access the pump without disconnecting the fuel lines underneath at the tank? British Leyland engineering is pretty thorough and mechanically sensible so I would think that they possibly allowed for fuel pump replacement basically just through the trunk.

I have a question, when doing this on my car, one of the sending unit wires came undone not from the tank as I took both off but rather from the car itself - the wire that came off has the same black plastic end that goes to the sending unit on your video but my problem is with the other end which has a male connector on it. I need to find out where to pull this connector in on the car itself, wiring harnes, plug, I do not know, any help would be great.

Hi Robert, love your videos! I nhave to do this job on my 2000 XJ8. I notice in this video that in it, you state that you were going to try to get that tank pivoted forward enough to access the pump with out disconnecting the quick connect fuel lines. Did that work - did they connect properly when you pushed the tank back in? Or did you have to go under the car in the parking garage and disconnect them to get the tank pivoted and back in? Thks!
