The michelins are really durable looking at the performance. Had the same experience with the PS4 from Michelin (the more street than performance oriented version compared to the PS4S). Bought a set in 2018, did 40.000km at least with it, including 3 trackdays. My parents did 60k with a set on their family car. They are a bit more expensive than most other brands, but much more durable than my former experiences (bridgestone/pirelli/vredenstein). Your way of using tyres is very different to most 'normal' people, but it gives a good indication. Great video

I don't care about how well they keep of stored properly. Alexander is absolutely correct when they are on the car. Due to the pandemic, bad weather, etc.,, we lost or missed most of our local track days over the past year and a half. Most of the miles on my PS4S have been highway miles (to places like The Dragon) along with trips back and forth of the Cherohala Skyway. Halfway through their usable tread life, they are beginning to look dry rotted and cracked. The last set did the same on our other car. This is not at all new. Many of us have heard this from other drivers as well as tire shops. When I ordered the PS4S for my vehicle, the dealer asked how long they'd be on the car and then I think they would last more than 2 years. He said it was because even if they aren't worn out at the 2-year mark, I'll probably need to replace them specifically due to a known issue with Michelin tires, that they don't hold up long term. It's meaningless to me because I never get close to 2 years out of a set of summer tires. But let's please not pretend that shortcomings often exist even among the very best products.

I've seen that name here in the States, but I've never seen or have ever heard of anyone using that brand. In fact, all of the Nankang tire offerings I've seen advertised here are cheap, normal, all-season, regular commuter car tires. I have a GTI TCR with Cup2 in N0 specification mounted from the factory. With lots of weight on the front axle and also lots of torque, I can push the Cup2 pretty fast to its limit, even on public roads. The problem is the soft side wall, which in the N0 spec is even more soft, than the standard one. On the front the outside edge of the tire gets too hot and therefore the tire begins to slide a lot, due to overheating of the compound. You can feel it in the steering, the feedback becomes more laggy and imprecise. I will try the AR-1 next, I think this will be way better, due to the stiffer sidewall.
@RobertMitchell4 жыл бұрын

@@RobertMitchell I was thinking about the AR-1 before, but your feedback sealed the deal for me. It's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm currently converting the TCR to a ringtool, so the main purpose will be the Racetrack including the Nordschleife. I only go fast on backroads with no traffic, 90% of the time I'm within the traffic laws. By the way, thanks for the in depth review of those tires 👍
@Chris675R4 жыл бұрын
@@RobertMitchell I have the AR-1 know fitted on my TCR. It really does benefit from the way stiffer sidewall. The turn in is way sharper and the stability throughout the turn is great. Also the TCR doesn't move as much with the rear on hard breaking compared to the Cup2. The peak grip limit is higher than with the Cup2, but not as much as I aspected, which shows how good the Cup2 really is. But the AR-1 handles heat a lot better and the handling benefits are exactly what I was hoping for. Next step is to see, how the AR-1 performs on the Nordschleife, but after your videos I'm pretty confident, that it does very well 😉

Tried Mich 4S's and just couldn't get the power down in my GT3 (but in the wet they are Awesome), so now run Dunlop Direaza's (your 2nd in line). They do indeed provide great feed back, but vibrate ALOT above 220. Now home and changed back to 4S and noticed the the wear is hugh (approx 68laps of 5kms). Pressure is at 32 on the rear (30front) but far out they have not lastest well. Will probably only get another 20 laps?? This is probably more for feedback to all as I have found this youtube clip very useful. Thanks Robert.

I really appreciate your feedback on these tires, especially as I have run two of the tires on my car, a Nissan 370Z sport coupe. My second set of tires on the car was the Michelin PS4S, a great tire in all respects that got fantastic tread life. The only drawback for me was the soft sidewalls, which led to less precise steering, a more vague feeling in the steering and poorer steering response. My current set is the Michelin PS Cup 2(240). This tire handles much better than the 4S and the only drawback may be the tread life. If its lifespan is unacceptably short, I may try the Dunlop Direzza. One reason I like the Michelins so much is because of their lightness, leading to lower unsprung mass. This may be because of their use of Nylon and Aramid fiber in the belts instead of steel.

I really appreciate the nuance here. You're not selling any single tire as "the best", but focusing on tradeoffs between them. One question: If you want to go for a personal record, do you practice on a more durable tire (e.g the cup 2) and then switch to the cup 2 r when you're feeling good about an attempt? Or is the performance delta large enough that subtleties you learn on the cup 2 are thrown out of the window when moving to the cup 2 r?
@RobertMitchell4 жыл бұрын
No, they’re different tires. Just go on the cup2r and do it. Generally speaking Anyone doing a record doesn’t need 40 test laps to get there. A handful of laps is enough to get to terms w car and conditions

My experience is for supercars the homologated tyre (and its super sports option version) are always best for a period of around 3-4 years. Pirelli and Michelin for example stagger the release of their products for a given fit so they don’t directly compete. My F430 was homologated on Pirelli which was the choice until they homologated a newer generation Michelin tyre... i expect soon a new Pirelli will take overs as best solution next cycle.

This is really interesting video. You are talking about the best tires for Nürburgring Taxi, not for the time attacking. Off course, you have to consider the cost, durability and safeness as a business. If it possible, I would like you to test other tires such as Hoosier R7, YH A050, and RE71RSat Nürburgring. Anyway, thanks for the great video!

Brilliant review! I will look for the AR-1 now. I am using RE71R as they are a good deal from Costco in Canada, and are almost acceptable in the wet and great in the dry on the track. I found I didn't get huge life out of the PSS4s and they were no where near as grippy as the RE71R, despite having great wet characteristics (although not as good as the Continental ContiforceContact, which were the best in the wet bar none, but hopeless on a dry track when compared to the RE71R).

Your video has cemented my decision to get rid of the MPSS on my M140i with an LSD and replace them with a set of MP4S. I live in the and MPSS is the wrong tyre for the weather. Grip is lacking during winter and during the summer the rears take long to get up to temperature unless the tarmac is toasty. They are gloriously grippy when 40-50C but that is a rare occasion in the UK.
@philiphawkins46844 жыл бұрын
Depending where you are in the world you can't get MP4S in 18".. if you can find a Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport that would be a good equivelant. Even Tyre Reviews rated it over the MP4S.

Does the higher grip of those track tyres takes away progressiveness when the limit are reached? I do enjoy the car moving around a little and one thing that's stopping me from getting cup 2 are if they are snappier when they goes.
@RobertMitchell4 жыл бұрын
The grippy compound doesn’t so much imo but the stiffer sidewalls can!
@magnus-thome4 жыл бұрын
The CUP2 are snappy when cold. Which they can be when you drive on the street on colder days.

it would be hard to gauge though when you have different widths and sizes. You would have to compare based on one tyre size.

Awesome info, thank you! I'd have to say that the Michelin Cup 2 R surprised me, simply based on the tread design, having 3 big siping grooves, yet still being so insanely fast. The Direzza we cannot get in the states (that particular model), so interesting to hear about that, especially the pressures. Even on the M3, let alone the S2k, my starting pressures are 26PSi (1.79 bar), so prettty scary, hah. Based on your guys running them, i had actually picked up some NS-2Rs for the M3. They were, at the time, hard to find in the US, with the AR-1s not being available at all. I've not done as much tracking and haven't experienced as many different types of tires, so it took some getting used to, going from your more 'normal' 340TW Continental Street Tire. Had way too much pressure in it, due to the stiff sidewalls. It's night and day compared to a street tire. The Nankangs were also a good bit heavier than other tires, cannot say how much though. First experience was in the wet a mid 40 Fahrenheit (7 Celsius or so) at Road Atlanta and it was an adventure... Between the wet and the low temps i was unable to get heat into them. That said, in the dry and heat of Georgia summers, they held up to many many trackdays, eventually starting to chunk near the end of their life, with decent tread left still. Definitely a great value for money option (Prices have shot up last year, so the value proposition almost went away here, sadly), consistent and long lasting. There now is also a 200TW option for the US market, so you can run them in Time Attack and racing classes more easily. Now debating between the AR-1 and the NT01 (Don't think those are available in Europe) to practice consistency. Seems like the AR-1s would fit the bill there. Would definitely like to see more tire 'tests' or feedback. It's hard to beat the data you guys get from all the Taxi and Rental laps. Would love to see, for example, how the NS-2R compares to the Falken 615K+ and the Hankook RS4, which are some of the favorite Grassroots Endurance Racing tires here. Thank you again!

Fascinating video - interesting to hear how you run separate sets of PS4Ss on the taxis so you can tally wet and dry laps separately. It’s little touches like that which show how seriously you take customer safety! One question (of many tbh), when you talk about “changing” tyres on say the E92 or the McLarens, do you always change all 4 corners or sometimes just the fronts? I run a rwd car on Cup 2’s and seem to be chewing through 3 front (specifically front left) tyres per set of rears. Am I doing something wrong?

@trackdayspecialk79464 жыл бұрын
Great content and very practical info that's hard to come by elsewhere. I appreciate your unbiased and fair comments, Robert. I have been running the Federal RSR for a number of years both on track and street. I too have experienced the dreaded split across the tire surface, but it never affected the performance - still, it's disconcerting. I have been quite happy with the performance and the durability on longer stints compared to regular P Zeros. However, once the temps get high the drop-off is significant. I run them on my Z4 Coupe with 265hp. They are very reasonable in the wet with acceptable ride comfort and noise on the street. The last set I ran only on the street and it lasted only 20K km due to the 2.5-3.0 deg camber. If I had swapped sides they would have gone 40K easy. They are so cheap though, that I can genuinely recommend them for street and track use. I will swap mine for a set of NS-2R, just to try out something different. Hope this helps someone...

Hi Robert! Love this type of content and has been following the happenings around the company for two years now. One thing came to my mind about this video, might be too specific, but would love to hear your thoughts about it if you have the time. I've been running a mild E36, full interior, all the good bits and pieces, but only around 190hp. I've been running NS2-Rs for two years and I've been loving the performance on it, though it quite degraded over the tire's lifetime. I am running 225/45 R17, so the top notch Michelin Sport Cup 2 /2R is not available in my size in my region. However, I could place my hands on Nankang AR-1, with 150% of the price of the NS2-R. In your opinion, would the AR-1 step the game up the game that much? When I can get it used, I am also running Hankook Ventus full slicks (half price of the NS2R), but I believe the AR-1 could not run those times, and I do not really expect it to. Thank you in advance and much love,
@RobertMitchell4 жыл бұрын
The best I can say is that I went from NS2R in 235/17 to ar1 in the same size on the GT86 in AR1 and just loved it. I think the tire would be amazing for you on an E36! I also think he speed differences between tires minimizes on the lighter cars.
