According to iconicartsintl.org, this is the La Scala production on Dec 21, 2016. I am aware there are other YT videos of the same performance. This one is complete, it has the scene where Romeo killed himself. Video quality is decent.
Roberto Bolle's comment and rehearsal clips from 1:02:18 to 1:12:00
Misty Copeland's comment and rehearsal clips from 1:44:50 to 1:54:55

I just love this. Roberto has play this role for 20 years. It's her first time. Juliet was only 14 years old when they met. I think Misty plays her with innocence and purity. As she should.

For 5 minutes of unceasingly dropping his beloved on the floor, Romeo was worthy to at least pay the injury of his careless hands - but Juliet (by the will of a theatrical incident?) Passed by, only hitting her partner’s hand .... The choreographer is clearly a little sado: after all, Prokofiev’s music failed to inspire him to read it more humanely

It's so interesting to see how different Ballet Companies, around the world, stage/play their rapier (and here even with an added poniard) fencing/fight scenes between Tybalt & Mercutio (and after Mercutio is killed) Romeo & Tybalt's final fight. Eventhough they use the "same" choreography by Kenneth Macmillian, they still turn out different. 👌🏻😍

I feel like Misty's dance style is very jetty and that's what I feel helps make this the perfect role for her actually. Because of Misty's style being known for "jerky" quick motions, I feel like this adds to the character of Juliet and her childish glee and excitement. It compliments the youth of her character very well. Misty seems extra dreamy as Juliet and personally it has to be my all time favorite role to see her perform.

Misty Copeland may have started ballet late in life, but I also feel her excitement and lesser experience gives her an advantage in playing the role of Juliet. I have seen her make a few mistakes while dancing, but that's completely normal! Everyone makes mistakes, but that doesn't give anyone a reason to hate Misty! I love her!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for posting the ballet inclusive of tomb scene and end credits! I still feel it's Bolle's show: every time I thought Copeland was doing a decent job of acting, he came out and demonstrated true depth of character. Overall, very nice production though. Copeland looked good, she and Bolle made a credible partnership, and no one does Renaissance Italian design like La Scala!
@minissa2009
@minissa2009 6 жыл бұрын
I assumed sets and costumes were from La Scala, although I didn't read all the closing credits. I know it's becoming more and more common for companies to either split the cost of technical elements like sets and costumes or to rent, but these look so quintessentially Renaissance Italian, I assumed it was designed in-house. You might have noticed in the comments on the "fail" video there was a rabid Misty fan who was parroting the Copeland backstory (but she was a prodigy!) and trying to get people to agree she was one of the best ballerinas in the world. I just watched a bit of what to me was a new ballet (Shurale) that featured Obravtsova, whom I love. I sat there with a silly grin on my face because she has that effect---all she has to do is walk onstage and I feel all is well with the world. Then I looked at this again (the scene you had marked). Then I remembered the assertion about Misty being one of the greatest dancers in the world. Then I revised my opinion downward. (Really was trying to give her a fair shot.)

@Bravo Luca you keep commenting everywhere that she is black black black ( blah blah blah) just like Misty Copland does. However, her mother is half African half Italian, her father is half African half German. Her skin color is just pretty " tanned " , so what???? She promoted herself through all that skin color fuss but in reality she is quiet heavy with no fluidity in her dance. Yes, she has a gorgeous body and face but it is not enough to be a ballerina that level she is been promoted. She is the one who sounds like a racist with all that skin color fuss.

Laura Streeter see part of the problem with your little review here is it perpetuates the elitist view that ballet is for a privileged view. That’s outdated and needs to be stomped out. We need to get rid of this snobbish view where we admired tricks and insane contortionist skill over musicality and artistry. And stop turning up our noses at late starters for God’s sake.

@Laura Streeter "I did notice that for some reason she couldn't get her leg past a 45 degree at 56:52 when she is being carried on his back. Most ballerinas go to at keast 75 degrees these days in this section of the choreography so I don't know of this was purposeful or not. " I don't believe this was purposeful, at least not from the get go. You can see from the practices she had with Roberto Bolle several times she lost her balance on him, fell off of him, and then laughed like a kid. Her practice sessions suggest to me she's very amateurish and couldn't hold difficult positions on her male partners and most of the work was on Bolle to help her out, ALOT, you can clearly see it here. This ballet should've been called "Bolle's Romeo to the rescue."

Romeo is role for a wild, brash, fresh, young unbridled boy. Bolle at that time was already very established, jaded, superstar. Me no like-y.

At 57:30 Ms. Copeland does a full leg extension (without using momentum) up to her shoulders. I haven't seen one of those in ages. They are extremely difficult to do. Normally the dancer will bend her leg and raise it (still difficult).

Anybody who loves dance NEEDS to see Rita Hayward dance in "GILDA" She began young, danced professionally with her father. I still like to know how she kept that black satin dress up.

Have a look to Emanuela Montanari in Lady Capuleti at 1:42:40 . Maybe somebody could learn from this cameo how to be a role rather than only act it.

Is that a man playing the nurse? When Juliet leapt on the nurse's lap, I thought I was sure, but it's hard to tell with camera so far away.

Don't get me wrong: Roberto is a superb dancer; so is Misty. I just don't believe they are in love. I feel like something's missing. I can see the technique, but I don't feel them. I watched "Giselle" the other day, with Roberto and Svetlana Zakharova, and I believed those characters since the very beginning. Maybe - and this is just a random guess -, in order for a couple to play Romeo and Juliet, to be younger and more vivacious, impulsive and not that mature might add up some advantages to the production.

I don't think so......Nureyev and Fonteyn were superb in the original 1965 version. And they had a 20 year age difference...where She was older .....but they were so convincing....you didn't notice any age at all

While I see this Version of Romeo and Juliet I have Alessandra Ferri and Angel Corella in my mind the whole time. I do think that Bolle and Copeland are great dancers, but I think Ferri and Corella danced Romeo and Juliet to a Level pretty difficult to reach. Ferri and Corella were truly teenagers in love on the stage. Bolle looked too "mature" and Copeland seemed a Little overwhelmed with the role to me. I think, maybe is just that dancers identify themselves with some roles better than with others. Ferri and Corella the most honest Romeo and Juliet that I've ever seen. I loved Bolle as Onegin but I really didn't buy his Performance as Romeo.

For 5 minutes of unceasingly dropping his beloved on the floor (at the final), Romeo was worthy to pay with the injury of his careless hands at least - but Juliet (by the will of a theatrical Fortuna?) passed by it.. The choreographer is clearly a little sado:even Prokofiev’s music failed to inspire him to read it more humanely😕

Here's the problem! People continuedly compare Misty to Alessandra along with other ballerina's! Misty is NEVER going to be good enough or even seen as a person if viewers can't get pass the fact that another dancer is taking over the role of Juliet. Many posters on here sound like people who work in an office where a beloved secretary has retired. The new secretary could speak three languages, have worked at Fortune 500 companies and have an MBA and NEVER be good enough to replace the beloved retired secretary! I know its painful for great performers to retire, especially those who are well loved. However, it is unfair of people to belittle the new replacement out of spite, pain and the feeling of loss. It's not fair to Misty nor is it fair to Alessandra or any one else. The reality is that dancers are replaced! Fans have to accept this! However, it is wrong what I see here on these boards: a hate campaign against Misty! Just stop the madness!
