I love this knife. I have been packing it in with a smaller companion knife casstrom woodsman. The handle is very comfortable. ( though not sure how long the rubber texture will hold up. Feels too soft for a knife handle! But thats why its comfortable ). I like how light it is considering its blade stock size. The swedge was way too sharp for me. I flattened it with a dremel. Found mine for 110 US. Quickly became one of my favorite knives. Glad REvans is chuffed with it too!

Hi Rob. I relooked at this video and one thing struck me that I missed before. Since then I've viewed many videos comparing Silky and Bahco saws, and they had one thing in common. The reviewer almost invariably used the same technique for both saws! Now when I saw your technique again, it was obvious why your style is so effective. There is a clear difference between the pull stroke and the return stroke, and you take your time about it, and do it carefully. The others just pound away as if speed is the only criterion that counts. Who cares if it takes 16 seconds longer to cut the log? Frantic activity like that probably uses up more calories anyway. Just thought I'd share that. Have a great day. I'm watching cricket and F1 today. Becoming a real couch potato! 😂

The Laplander is less prone to snapping than a silky and as most folks started off on a Laplander then use the silky the same way, which is obviously wrong.

This video reminds me, I'm looking for a knife and folding saw for a last minute grab and go camping bag. The bag may end up not being used for months on end so I don't want to tie up too much money, but not so cheap they are just crap and end up being annoying. (The knife needs to have a bit more heft than a Mora). Any suggestions?

Cold steel fin bear, fin hawk, outdoorsman lite. I'd probably put two Mora's in there, carbon robust and something stainless for cooking. There's always the bahco hacking knife for splitting wood and dirty jobs , cheap and bombproof. Hultafors also have a lot to offer.

Quick question, Rob - Has the SRK San Mai ever come out in a sabre or convex grind? Or has it always been hollow ground? I'm beginning to develop a strong hankering for that knife! This test review came as a bit of a revelation, especially your comments about the comparison to the Falkniven! Those were pretty damn good feathersticks, and I know how particular you are about that. Is that saw not a bit more awkward to pack than a Silky folder? It certainly cuts like a dream. I seem to come across numerous videos where they complain bitterly about Silky saws snapping blades. I had a chat to the arborist who works here on the Park, and he says that is entirely down to bad technique. He claims it's almost impossible to break a Silky blade IF you use the correct method, correctly. Then in this video you also mentioned it. Your view on this? Cheers mate!
@RobEvansWoodsman
@RobEvansWoodsman 2 жыл бұрын
Go slow and put pressure on the pull and the silky will be your best friend. As far as I know the SRK SanMai only came in hollow grind but the carbon versions came in a sabre grind , I might be wrong on this.

@@RobEvansWoodsman Yes! That was definitely the majority of it Rob. And i don't have really big mits either. Just did not feel like it would be comfortable with extended use. I like nice things and thought the investment might be worth it. But when i got it I just wasn't in love with it with that handle, and it was also $100 more than the srk 3v i just ordered. I also think the longer blade fits a good place with some other knives i have. Hope to get it delivered in a few days.

@@RobEvansWoodsman I got it in today. Initial impression is I made the right choice for me. Handle felt great! Like the blade length, wouldn’t want longer though, like overall feel. Spine is sharp. This is Taiwan made so they must have shifted production from Italy. Like you say out of box is ok sharp but needs some polishing work. Fit to sheath is bit tight but might wear in. Some good products but Cold steel treat customers like dog 💩. Had a few SRK blades & ALL of the handles came lose after mild splitting/batoning. Never came off but you could feel the movement & hear the rattle of the tang. Most annoying, & from my experience cold steel have ZERO interest in fixing/replacing their product. In fact you're lucky if they even reply to you. Luckily both HH & knives&tools are happy to send a replacement or give you a refund/credit.

Like the Master Hunter, the SRK 3V versions are flat saber grind that are thicker out to the tip compared to coldsteel's San Mai versions. Great video and enjoying your master level feather sticks! I completely agree with your assessment when compared to the Fallknivens, A1X > SRK 3V = S1X but I would put it very close to almost equal to the S1X. SRK has superior steel, but the S1X has convex grind and a more heft and girth for chopping and batoning.
