Nothing wrong with taking an excellent existing pattern and putting your own twist on it with some small modifications. That's how good design is done. So many knives today are designed to just look cool with performance being a secondary consideration.

I own. A Bison Bushcraft in Apple wood I bought in 2006. It is still going strong and is a fantastic knife. However for me as much as I love the 3mm stock and the smaller blade as I mainly carve/prep food but I personally find the handle a little small and his woodsman knife handle is incredibly comfortable but the 4mm stock on the woodsman is too thick for me. I think the bushcraft blade and woodsman handle would be incredible. Whichever I have never understood these thick really long knives, they just don’t carve, are not great for food prep and as for battening……you can with a 3 mm knife if steady but why would you, thats what axes are for! Totally agree, some cheap knives are fantastic, like the Mora stuff but if you do get an expensive hand made one then pay the craftsmen what he is worth.

30 yrs ago I bought a box of mixed "junk" knives from 'Gina... (China) cheapest money ever... folders, fixed blades, some leather sheaths, some cordura... Cheap gifts to grandsons... tossed in tool boxes and fishing tackle boxes, etc. I have purposely beat the crap out of them. Nothing I'd do to a knife that I respect and paid good money on. Other than not holding an edge for a week long trip, that still live! Mora knives aren't in stores in New England, so odd as it may sound I've never seen one in person. Crazy huh? We are limited to Buck, Schrade, Case... for larger manufacturers. A SAK with a ferro stick is at my side daily, a Buck Special for outdoor excursions... someday maybe a real beauty will be mine, but at this rate I'll be retired, lol. Thx Rob!

I’m pleased the Pro Robust made your list. My knowledge is a mere fraction of yours, but the Robust has consistently been one of my favourite knives full stop. Despite spending much more on others, I always end up coming back to it. Comfortable to use, surprisingly well built and cheap enough not to cry if you misplace or (somehow) manage to break it! As a consequence I never feel I need to hold back or worry about not sharpening it properly (I’m still learning).

My favorite maker is L T Wright. Don’t know if he’s available in the Uk. He puts emphasis on the handle. This was an interesting vid. I own several moras and find all to be quite satisfactory. Little they can’t do, especially if you carry a hatchet instead of beating up your knife.

I've had two BHK pathfinder knives in the past and have thought about getting a LT genesis but I just can't get on with the broom handle .
@whiskeyriver43223 жыл бұрын
I have several of LT's blades. The original "One Foot in the Wild" Genesis, the GNS, and the Lagum. My eyes hate the broom handle on the Genesis, but my hands love it. But the best blade, hands down, is on the Lagum; unfortunately my hand fatigues quickly from the handle. It can be troublesome to find the right combo. Right now, I'm using the Mora Robust and the Anders Forest tool the most lately, for both comfort and ability. My Woodlore was a disappointment. Let her go years ago, and I'm not sorry.

Great vid Rob. I agree on the Bison Bushcraft Knife Roger’s knives are works of art. I bought mine in 2006 from Roger, Apple handle and 01 paid about £130 (which is funny looking at todays prices!) and it is still going strong today. For me the blade is perfectly sized for all the things I want from a knife ie carving and food prep. However with big hands I have always found the handle just a bit too small for me. For me the perfect knife would be the Bison Bushcraft Knife 3mm but with a Bison Woodsman full size handle.

The handle is so often overlooked when people choose a knife - you really do need to pick a knife up before you spend £200......try a Mora first and if your expensive knife isn't as comfortable....look at something else or keep the Mora. There are hundreds of makers and styles, it really is a fun thing to go visit a blade show with money in your pocket and get the right fit. The blade and grind kinda choose themselves based on application.
