Fun Fact: The Director of Zootopia was a child when this came out, and is a fan of the theory that this version of Robin Hood is the version of Robin Hood from the Zootopia universe. As for my interpretation of the kid rabbit's last line, I always thought that it was more along the lines of "Robin is going to be a dad, and will be busy raising a family. So, someone needs to be the new dashing hero."

One has to wonder just how many folktales centered on animals could’ve occurred in a world inhabited by anthro beasts. Did the likes of Three Little Pigs, the Bremen Town Musicians, Reynard the Fox, Br’er Rabbit, Mr. Toad, and Uncle Wiggly occur in this context?

I personally thought that Skippy's last line was along the lines of, "Robin is going to have lots of kids, and I have lots of experience with that, coming from a large family myself, so he'll need a babysitter." But your theory is good too, and it could go a little of both.

Robin Hood may have been one of Disney's cheapest productions, re-using animation from no less than four previous movies, but I still enjoy it. The voice cast all excel in their roles, especially Disney veteran Phil Harris (Little John), and Peter Ustinov (Prince John).

As for the little baby rabbit, she was voiced by Dori Whitaker. I think the poor voice work is a consequence of Whitaker just having been SO young when her lines were being recorded. She was born in 1967, which would have made her six years old when the movie released in theaters, but according to the Wikipedia article, most of the voice actors for the movie were confirmed in 1970, barring Brian Bedford as the lead (They had someone else doing Robin at that time, but later dropped him in favor of Bedford). That would make Whitaker potentially as young as THREE years old when they started recording her lines. I know you're not being super harsh on her here, but I'm not surprised a literal toddler isn't putting out very good work. On the whole, I'm glad you seem to enjoy this movie so much. This was one of the holy trinity of Disney movies for me when I was a kid, and I'm always glad when people enjoy it.

I agree. It’s unscripted so less time and effort for them to produce. I’d like for First Viewings to become its own show with the exact same format just without an accompanying Nostalgia Critic episode. The show would focus on random movies that Doug wouldn’t cover as the Nostalgia Critic, although sometimes he would.

Look, I've been obsessed with the legends of Robin Hood since I read Howard Pyle's version at 12. As far as "low stakes"....THATS HOW THE ACTUAL STORIES ARE. They're usually very one-note. "Robin goes to shoot in an archery contest". "Robin saves one of his men from a hanging". "Robin steals from this rich bishop". The episodic nature of this movie is very in keeping with the tone of the legends. And that's what makes it so nice for me. It's like watching the stories in cartoon form. Robin Hood isn't just a hero for the grand and dramatic. He's the guy you call for small problems.

Phil Harris was quite the contributor to Disney in the 60s and 70s. He can be a bear twice and a cat once, but you can tell who that is immediately. That Sister Mouse at the church. Took me a moment to realize that’s the original Lady of Lady and the Tramp voicing her too.

This was basically my introduction to Robin Hood as well. It's a rather funny story. You see my folks would usually record movies on VHS either through TV showings (That is how I was introduced to several episodes of Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Inspector Gadget) or from multiple VCRs. The movies that were done in this process were The original Star Wars Trilogy (Despite it running out of room before the finale of Return of The Jedi) The Jungle Book Robin Hood The Brave Little Toaster and The Rescuers Down Under. Robin Hood was recorded on the same video cassette as Jungle Book (and a little bit of The Brave Little Toaster), you could say that this was my Barbenheimer, a 'Robin Book' if you will.

I said this on the review video, but I’ll say it again: I think The Fox and the Hound deserves to have a review as well, both Robin Hood and The Fox and the Hound are Disney animated films that I’ve seen a lot and loved from a very young age, although I think Robin Hood has been re-issued on VHS and DVD every 7 years that it continues to be introduced to each generation. I don’t know if The Fox and the Hound has had as much home video releases as Robin Hood but I’m part of the crowd that has a fascination with both films because I love them both

My mom has a funny story about when she saw this movie as a child. She says this was one of the first movies she remembers seeing in theaters when it came out and instantly fell in love with it. And with it back in the days when home videos wasn’t a thing yet, she couldn’t see it very much. It wasn’t like you could put it on Netflix or even dvd or vhs and watch it again and again after all. So when she and her family heard Robin Hood was going to be on tv one night, she was so excited and everyone gathered around the tv to watch it. Only it wasn’t the ‘right’ version. It was a live action, adult version of Robin Hood and my mom was so disappointed and angry it wasn’t the right one. Either way, when it did come out on VHS she bought it and it was one of those movies we watched over and over and quoted left and right in my family. I loved this movie as a kid and I still think it’s great!

Truth be told, everyone who says they want Robin Hood to be more grand and epic and stuff has clearly not seen anything Robin Hood related aside from the BBC tv show or the more recent movies. Robin Hood stories were never grand epics even back in the day, they were always fun little adventure stories full of trickery and clever plans, but never big battles or whatever.

Very nice, Rob, the more Red Dwarf references in Channel Awesome stuff, the better~ My mom and I still throw the-- YOU'RE NEVER AROUND WHEN I NEED YOU! The movie samples it a few times, really. Yeah, as an adult, the royal snit of Prince John being a delightful ponce is just fantastic, plus it gave us sharp-earned fans something to pick out in Fantastic Mr. Fox! Y'know, there's plenty of merit to those Wes Anderson movies, y'oughta cover his body of work sometime~

Nice to see Doug loves this movie pretty much the same as I. It was a staple growing up, and most certainly my favorite Disney cartoon movie.

We need more of these and real thoughts. I love you guys going into your history with the movies and your actual thoughts on them. I genuinely do love to hear what people think about about movies as a movie enthusiast. Cause they always see things I don’t and help me get a different perspective.

Originally, The studio was planning to do a movie based on the stories of Chanticleer. When that fell through they said they wanted to do a version of Robin Hood but set it in the old west, as you know from the NC video.

Funny how don bluth was working for Disney at this time, and when he left to form his own studio he later did Chanticleer with Rock-a-Doodle.

After seeing him in the Muppet Show and hearing him in this, I love how Peter Ustinov was willing to go silly for a performance and still make it legit funny.

Nice to have these again and what a fun movie to do it with 😎. Also, I can see the perspective of someone that did grow up with this thinking that some scenes drag. I would argue that perhaps some of the stuff with the kids could be cut, but them coming together to sing the Prince John song was fun and kind of important to the story. I kind of miss movies taking the time to just let characters just chill or do whatever 😅.

All I have to say is, I grew up with this film and even today I sometimes whistle that one song as i amble along. Its not perfect, obviously, but its still a great rendition of robin hood geared for kids with enough humor aimed at adults so the parents can enjoy it too.
