Questions to consider: 1. In your opinion, does Thicke’s song “Blurred Lines” condone/promote nonconsensual sex? 2. In your opinion, was the backlash for “Blurred Lines” warranted or did society and the media “overreact”? 3. What are your thoughts regarding the discourse about Emily Ratajkowski’s claims against Robin Thicke ? I hope you find this insightful and informative. I look forward to your thoughts and opinions. 1. Absolutely is as rapey as it gets. I never understood how it got to be so popular. When I first saw THIS video (a mash up of Blurred Lines and Nirvana's Rape me) I wept. ACTUAL tears: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGi9dZV4qM-Aqpo If this link won't post look for "BLURRED LINES + RAPE ME MASHUP - AMANDA PALMER & REB FOUNTAIN" on KZbin 2. Should have been a bigger backlash. It was rapey garbage. 3. I feel bad for Ratajkowski that she had to endure that, then all the nonsense that came with how long it took for her to speak out. ALL victims have to process it before they can talk about it. VERY insightful and informative as always. Love your stuff.

Oh, and I just came across what I wrote about that Reb Fountain/Amanda Palmer performance art mashup when I came across it in 2021: "I was blown away by it. All they did was just sing those horrible lyrics articulately. Nothing special. But coming out of the mouths of women in tandem like that… ho. Lee. Fuck."

Wow, I just watched and listened to the link you provided (the mashup) and just wow. First time seeing that. I honestly have no words. When “Blurred Lines” came out (2013) I loved it. We played that song at all our family gatherings, stepped to it, everyone I knew loved that song. When listening to music I tend to only pay attention to the beat and instruments, not the lyrics. To this day, I can’t sing a song all the way through with the right lyrics just the beat 🤣 I say all that to say that when this song came out I didn’t understood all the backlash and criticism. I didn’t think it was rapey at all. I could not comprehend why people were “making such a big deal” then I saw the music video and didn’t understand why the models were naked in the unrated one. Made zero sense to me. After Blurred Lines, Robins career tanked and I forgot all about him. It wasn’t until I came across an article rehashing the 2013 controversy regarding his song and music video that allowed me to see things from a different angle in addition to being an adult now and having more life experiences to comprehend the “Blurred Lines” song. Regarding Emily. After every video I make, I always let my family watch and we discuss. One of my family members found it odd that Emily couldn’t recall the assault until after Robin Thicke blocked her on Instagram. I didn’t find it odd at all. I explained to them that so often after someone experiences trauma they “block” it from their memory. When triggered, the memory can “come back”. It is so sad and unfortunate that Emily’s motives and intentions were questioned upon her speaking out. I am so glad that not only did the Director corroborate what happened but so did one of the other models on set. I’m so glad they backed her (Emily) up. Very interesting to me, that Robin to this day has yet to address it.

I was a Robin Thicke fan before he “blew up” with this song. The year after Blurred Lines came out, I was SA’d on a date who said the exact line “I know you want it” in response to me repeatedly saying “I do not want to have sex” “I don’t want to do anything”. This was a month after graduating high school. Didn’t realize that was r@pe and just blocked the memory out as best I could. Wasn’t until starting college a few months later, during freshman orientation, where they spoke heavily about r@pe culture and this song in particular. Some months later, if you remember, the popular documentary “The Hunting Ground” came out and went viral - this was played & talked about nonstop and forced me to confront what happened. If you remove the lyrics, the song was a bop. I loved the song, till it happened to me. Never purposely listened to it again. Society didn’t overreact imo, it needed to be talked about. R@pe doesn’t have to only occur in a dark alley by a stranger, or only if you’re intoxicated. It could be on a first date, like me, for example. I think it helped society talk about what consent is. I wasn’t fully taught about consent until after this song & my assault.

I will say that Robin did have a hold with the R&B crowd w his songs like Magic, Lost Without You, and Sex Therapy. Those songs were all over the R&B and Hip Hop stations. The song Blurred Lines was a blessing for a moment then turned into Robin's biggest downfall. I know he now regrets the HELL out of this song. Sometimes, its nice to stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to.

In all honesty, that song is innocent what is playing in 2023 now. I am starting to see that lyrics can't be taken as serious or reflect on the singer's opinion. Look at Eminem's homophobic songs in the past. His friend was Elton John and when Eminem was interviewed he supported gay marriage. Look at Meghan Stallion WAP song. Or how the Electric Slide is a dildo song. One of my favorite songs is a song about murder. Of course, Thicke's action is another story. He has to clean it up. I can only hope he cleans up.

The video is rapey as all hell and I agree 100% with everything Davidson (the woman who spoke at about the 10 minute mark) said. I didn't know who Robin even was when that was released so there was no love loss there, but Pharrell Williams' disgusting defense of the song (which I'm so glad you included in this video) was a real gut punch. Miley Cyrus performing with Thicke and defending it turned me off to her too. He already seemed like a complete POS before all the spousal abuse, child abuse and other craziness came to light, so it was harder for my opinion of him to go any lower, but it did. Then, when he started in with some real BS excuses like defended his sexual abuse and cheating on having a "sex addiction" and acting as if he was the real victim in all this and I just wanted to punch him in the face. He is predatory garbage.

Thanks so much for weighing in and sharing your thoughts and opinions. To be fair, both Robin and Pharrell have publicly stated that they would never make another video like “Blurred Lines” again and Pharrell did an interview in 2019 where he stated that he was “embarrassed and would never make a song like that again”. www.bbc.com/news/newsbeat-50052155 This episode and the interviews in it were very interesting to me. Robin’s, Oprah interview was interesting in how he kind of transferred the “backlash and blame” onto Miley by saying that he was twerked upon and he was too busy singing to know what was happening. I found that interesting 🤔 Then, Tyson Beckfords comments regarding Emily were also interesting. To me, it really seemed as though he downplayed Robins actions. I could be wrong but it felt like he was “excusing” what he did. When he kept saying “oh Robin I’m sure didn’t mean any harm” “he was raised better than that” “his father is a legend” “he got caught up in the heat of the moment” etc… I have to be honest, when this song first came out I loved it. LOVED it. I was a fan of Robin especially of his album “The Evolution of Robin Thicke”. I tend to listen to the beat of a song and not necessarily the lyrics so when it was released I didn’t understand the criticism. Then I saw the music video, the unrated one and didn’t understand why the models were naked. To me, it didn’t make any sense. I remember this song blew up, he was on top as an artist and then everything quickly descended. When this transpired I was very young and didn’t fully understand what the problem was.

Karma can take more than than just the lifetime it happened in. God, your guides, and the Council of Elders has to set everything up so you are in exactly the same position as the one you hurt. Then you feel what they felt. Then you know what its like. So yes, that can take time and go into another life. Remember we are eternal souls. We reincarnate over and over, the learning never ends. Learning something is always for use at a future time.

Another thorough look at an emotionally charged situation. I was so invested in this controversy when it happened and it irrevocably changed how I listened to popular music. Like everybody else I loved the song until someone else pointed out the questionable messaging. I'm always excited when you upload something new! Robin Thicke's rise and fall of a career really feels like such a fever dream to me. Like, I almost forgot how controversial 'Blurred Lines' was and how many conversations about rape culture it started. Also pretty disgusting to see how vehemently Pharrell defended and tried to gaslight the interviewer into thinking that there were no sinister intentions about the objectification of the women in their musicvideo. I mean he can't be serious with his claim that the song was about nothing but "dancing and having a good time" lol Plus, what does he even mean with the sentence "don't good women have sexual thoughts"? He already shared a piece of his own twisted view of women by even bringing up this type of discussion in the first place.

I don’t have the time stamp, but Robin admitting in an interview that the sheep was in the video to represent *beastiality* was shocking and disturbing to me. 😳 This whole time I had assumed that the sheep could mean 1 of 2 things. Either it was a representation of innocence and purity (suggesting that the men were singing about being a woman’s “first time” aka taking her virginity) OR it was a representation of how men become mindless sheep in front of these gorgeous women….they have a flock of men following them all the time. I NEVER ONCE thought the sheep represented a sexual object or something the men would want to have sex with. That is really disgusting. 🤮

The excuses by the radio guy for Robin is so ridiculous, the “I know him, I’m sure he didn’t mean any harm by it” (?!) This is the problem, defending another guy because he’s nice to YOU. Like think about the scenario: the girls were revealing their top half and Robin had all his clothes on. At what point did he stop seeing Emily as a human that he didn’t have to ask her consent to handle her body? And saying, “you know his dad Alan Thicke was a good guy” literally has nothing to do with any of this. Robin has to be accountable no matter who is dad is. Also, Emily Ratajkowski’s book is one of the best pieces of writing I’ve read. She’s a smart, thoughtful woman who happens to also be a model. The idea that a woman with pretty privilege, that her multiple showbiz traumas were somehow less believable because she’s beautiful and makes money off that beauty… well this is with r@p€ culture in a nutshell.

That Pharrel interview about the lyrics was like a precursor to some red pill manosphere youtube bros logic smh "Blurred lines" was a phrase before the song was written known to be an anti consent rhetoric... So like, they HAD to know they were writing a sexual assault fantasy song. The media was right to be critical about it, but they also gave too much grace to Thicke and Pharrel. Letting those clowns defend themselves with some mental olympics just gave a lot of naysayers ammunition to argue against assault survivors, when instead they could have put seasoned and serious interviewers to really confront these guys with serious questions and responses. All the power to Emily Ratajkoski, and shame on Thicke for never apologizing to her publicly or privately. I wanna believe he's grown as a person since all of this but I really don't think a nepo baby who has a well recorded past of lying successfully deserves another chance at a big platform.

The funny part was his wife when she said several things. 1) my friends dance like that on him all the time (awkward) 2) the song is about taking” Molly”( what). His and hers logic baffles me.

@@betheecommentator that's awesome. I hope drinking and drugging is not in the kids future. That has to be traumatic going thru what he went thru with his parents separation and divorce. Especially the drop off and pick up arrangements with his parents not speaking. Having a social worker in-between the visits because of his parents fallen relationship. God bless!!

Someone I am very close too live in an abusive situation and she was afraid to leave but she never said anything positive about when we alone or in public. I am glad his wife became brave enough to leave. I have a hard time understand why she did the tv shows.. why not say no .. maybe she was too afraid to say noi think part of me wanted them to in love and as happy as she made it sound.

i remember discovering robin thicke when he realeased his first CD..loved his music pre blurred lines, Something about him wanting to go mainstream not only ruined his professional career, but musically he never recovered either. Never liked Blurred LInes because it seemed too "basic" if that makes sense. Robin is a sleazeball though so he gets no sympathy from me.

Yeah, he wasn’t making party music before. It was soulful and very reminiscent of gospel. Proudly never liked blurred lines, it paled in comparison to his previous projects.

lending a hand to them when they need it. whenever they need it. being a voice for the voiceless. really helping each other. building each other up. really standing with each other. stand up for each other. really inspire. be an inspiration. be a voice for the voiceless. be their voice. speak up. speak out against any wrongdoings. speak for the voiceless. make a change. make some positive changes. make a stand. take action. take some action. make that change.

I like how with Miley and Robin thicke, Robin was blamed when Miley actively was the Wild one but when Janet & Justin Timberlake preformed Justin was the one that did the sexual acts but Janet was blamed. It shows you how white women are protected and seen as the virginal victims while the black women is sexualized and is asking for it and takes all the blame for actions done to them.

I recall Miley getting a ton of flack for this at the time. Not as extreme as Janet, of course, but she was definitely criticized.

Robins statement is immediately bullshit talking abt all 3 of them (Robin, TI, and Pharrell) are happily married men. Idk abt Pharrelly bc hes pretty quiet on that front, but it was clear that he and TI were not happily married. So just based on the premise of there being no ill intention bc we're dealing with happily married men, he'd still lose. I also hate the way Pharrell was trying to twist things around in that interview. I was hoping the interviewer had better rebuttals but he did okay. I cant stand pompous men like Pharrell who thinks he's being clever by deceitfully playing on semantics.

I think there is no doubt that Robin acted like an asshole. Fame really got to his head and he was not capable (or wanting) to deal with it. That said, I also think that Blurred lines got a lot of heat because it caught mainstream (read white) popularity. I can imagine Pharrell being insanely frustrated about it because if you listen to pretty much all rap songs and watch their videos how they talk about women and how they show them in the videos, Blurred lines is nothing in comparison. Here he is defending calling them "good girls wanting to be a bad girls" when rappers are just "these hoes and bitches yada yada". I mean, just look at Nicki Minaj videos... and she is female. I still think the Blurred lines video is more creepy than the song, but that could be because it is so catchy. I thought of it at first like Pharrell said: someone a bit uptight and shy that wanted to let loose on the dance floor but did not dare to. Until I saw the video :P Great video, Bee! It always brightens my day when I see a new one from you!
