lm old. 60+. lve seen Robin many times and l play guitar and know his songs and use a vibe etc etc lf you know you know. What l cant relate now is how good he sounded live in the 70s when bad sound was the norm. l know its the PA but he and Frampton seemed to have a method to the over-all sound that was unmatched. The band had great tone. Not Just the guitar.

Part of Robin's magic is that he plays so many notes that don't even exist and every note is perfect. it's one thing to play half-step bends but he's doing everything between and it's always just right :) In 1977 I was working with a foley tech on Santa Monica Blvd at Scott Sound, Robin was across the street at Paramount working on an album. I was dyin' to get a chance to wander over but the Starsky & Hutch show had to go on..... Quality of this is really great, thanks!!!

Actually... They've both started performing at the same time, give or take a few months. Also, their first albums were released the same year. Jimi with The JH Experience, and Trower with Procol Harum. Hendrix had control of the sound, while Trower joined a preexisting band, and wasn't able to go guitar wild, as it was a team effort. Both have (had) stated Albert King as their influence. Robin has stated Jimi as an influence, but with both being influenced by King, before either got on a record, it makes sense that their sound would be so similar. If you listen close enough to some of Procol Harum, you can hear a shadow of the sound that Trower eventually became known for, once he had his own band, and therefore the control (not forced control, but rather, a great collaboration). Check out Albert King.

Bill Lordan was with Sly & Family Stone after Andy Numark left, and so did bassist Larry Graham (the first notable bassist to really use walking thirds up and down thumping and popping) to form his Graham Central Station. A good video of him with Sly was on Soul Train. I believe both Reggie and Bill have their strong playing points and differ to compare the two pros' approaches to interpreting Trower's tunes. Bill is a bit jazzier/crispier and Reggie was more solid and powerful. (Appice is my all time favorite and no one even come close to him. I've heard people rant about Neal Pert, but Appice was doing the same licks 15 years earlier than Pert. Cozy Powell; R.I.P., would have to be my all time No2, tied with Ginger Baker. Cozy's song 'The Blister" still holds the Guinness Record as the fastest - displacing Appice w/ Cactus, "Parchment Farm," ; which displaced Alvin Lee's "I'm Going Home.") Trower's tone has always been the thing that grabs a musician and Dewar's vocals were the perfect compliment...

Bizarre really, all these comparisons with Hendrix. The same thing happened in the 80's with SRV and Jimi - must've made for good press, even though the SRV comparison was even more ridiculous than the one comparing Robin with Jimi. Truth is Robin is his own musician, and outside of a grounding in the blues (and the fact that he plays a Stratocaster), he has little in common with Jimi. Not sure why so many years later people are still buying into it.

James Dewar one of the best rock singer/bassists ever....saw Trower a half dozen times in 80's, 90's & 2000's and while he is a guitar master, his backup band was always a disappointment when compared to the soulful voice of Jim Dewar. Tragic life story...his brain got messed up in an operation in 1987 & died in 2002. Tower's classics had the vocal genious of Dewar...RIP
