Wow, what a great scene between Edith and Kirk.❤ It explains a lot to the storyline and shouldn't have been deleted.😢🖖

One problem I have with the original episode is that Edith didn't seem passionately in love as Kirk was. This deleted scene goes a long way toward correcting that impression. Unfortunately, episodes had to be just about 50 minutes long every time, so some scenes had to go if they made the episode too long.

Harlan Ellison named it for a scene at the beginning which was rewritten by Dorothy Fontana, owing to budgetary reasons. On initial investigation of the planet, Spock and Kirk spot in the distance a series of old buildings suspended in the sky. Kirk remarks “There it sits, like a city on the edge of forever…”

In the original Ellison draft, Kirk actually lets Edith fall down the stairs (with non-fatal consequences), since at that point in the story he already knows that she’s fated to die. But in the finale, he is unable to bring himself to allow her death in the accident, which then falls to Spock. This is exactly reversed in the version that aired. Also, in the final draft script (not Ellison’s version) there is a bit of additional dialogue that identifies the author of the poem that Kirk cites with the theme of “let me help.” It’s a long, multiple-syllabic name that sounds vaguely Hawaiian, but Kirk tosses it off as easily and knowingly as we would identifying Willam Shakespeare. I don’t know if it was actually shot or not.

Thank you for posting. I believe there’s a lot of footage that didn’t make it due to time- as much as 15 minutes. I hope it’s preserved somewhere. It went through extensive re-writes even after Ellison submitted his second draft, as he was contractually obligated to do.

Wow this scene is terrific. Great find. It's kind of funny how her fall (or stumble) down the stairs was only associated with her possible death rather than falling in love. This scene obviously makes that a matter of fact. We never get that confirmation in this episode. Only Kirk ever admits to falling in love. This is Edith's admission. Maybe it's repetitive but it makes it "their" love story rather than just his love story.

It's fascinating, because up till now we've seen Kirk say he loved Edith, but there was never an indication that she felt AS deeply for HIM! I am reminded of a point that's always been vague: HOW would Kirk and Spock make the "jump back" to their own time? The Guardian had said that if Kirk and Spock "were successful" at fixing the timeline, then "they would be returned", which indeed happens, but how does it come about? The final scene in 1930 shows them wearing period clothes, but when they arrive back in their own time, they're back in their uniforms. It seems unlikely their clothing was restored "automatically", which means they had a chance to 'change back'. Did they have some way to 'signal' the Guardian that they were ready to return? This leads to the possibility that they could've brought Edith back with them, getting her properly 'out of history', rather than forcing her to die!

I think it's clear from the broadcast cut that they are in love with each other. Kirk looks at her with such concern after she slips on the stairs and the way she looks at him as he looks at her tells it all. In this deleted scene, it is a little strange that Kirk wouldn't understand what "fallen" means in the context of "already fallen for you" -- cool scene -- but I prefer the broadcast cut.
@screenplayhouse49322 күн бұрын
I completely understand why this choppy mess was cut, but it's heartbreaking that the idea itself was a cut. It could have been a much simpler exchange, like -- EDITH ... I see why they left this out, it's incoherent and way too lovie and corny, but mainly because the script is so bad. @STho2052 күн бұрын
The staff were mostly procedural writers. GR and GCoon were both cop show trained. Fontana was a starting out writer gaining experience. Ellison was a deep metaphor writer with a room full of awards....they were removing a lot of his metaphor as there rewrote and simplified the story.
@chriggsiii2 күн бұрын
@@STho205 At one point, in the distant past, I dimly recall reading Ellison's original version of the script. As I recall, while powerful and dramatic, it wasn't "Star Trek." It was very dark and pessimistic (druggies on a starship??!!); it needed rewrite. And some of the most powerful scenes in the final ep, as I recall, such as those painful and devastating few seconds where Kirk sees and recognizes McCoy, realizes what he is about to do and prevents him, and Edith is summarily and almost instantaneously snuffed out, were all moments with which Ellison had very little to do. All of which is to make clear that I don't see Ellison as holy writ, nor am I of the school that the ep would have been "better" if it had been left closer to Ellison's original; to the contrary, in fact. But this particular scene IS Star Trek; it is uplifting and positive, and is of a piece with the "tinta" of the rest of the ep; it should have been retained, I think.

I'm sure it had to be cut for time. Back then, a one-hour show had 52 minutes of story time (plus or minus a few seconds). If the first edit of an episode ran too long, it had to be tightened up. That's unfortunate, because it's a beautiful scene.

This the thing I don’t get. Instead of making all the Nu-Trek, pretty all bad, why did they just simply hire a cast, and re-shoot some of the original TV shows, fully realized in to two hour movies? A lot of of those old stories were busting at the seams, contained in those old 45 - 48 minute formats. I’d have paid cash for a 2 hour “City on the Edge of Forever.” A full 2 hour “Cage/Menagerie?” With right script additions, why a 2 hour “Space Seed,” “Omega Glory,” etc. The old episodes that couldn’t make the “Cut?” Forget ‘em.

Add it back into the film!

It’s too bad Kirk couldn’t have brought Keeler with him back to the future. That would have prevented her involvement in WW II. I’m sure she wouldn’t have objected upon learning her alternative was either contributing to the death of many innocent people … or her dying prematurely.

I always wanted Kirk to truly fall in love, Marty and have a family on the Enterprise.

Yes, with my own series, "Mego Star Trek: The Lost Missions", Kirk actually does get married, and so does Spock. It is an alternate universe series. It is in my other videos, if you are interested. 👍🖖

WOW so amazing is it real or not AI, I wonder. 😊
@megostartrek2 күн бұрын
No, no AI at all. Kirk and Spock were very "Anti-AI" and "Anti-Artificial Intelligence" with episodes like "Return Of The Archons" and "The Ultimate Computer." I doubt that AI could make acting as good as William Shatner and Joan Collins in this scene. Thank you for your comments. 👍🖖

Kirk had many women, but other than the Enterprise, only one great love.

I never cared for kissy-kissy, and I didn't/don't care for it in Star Trek. Relationship should be purely mental in cerebral shows like this. Sex, even a simple kiss, ruins it. Consequently, contrary to comments, I believe the producers were correct in omitting this scene. There are only so many minutes in a program, and there were far more important scenes to include in this particular episode. There was enough to demonstrate the feelings between Kirk and Edith without this scene. Ok, you mushy folks out there in fandom, go ahead and hate me, doesn't bother me. I've been around long enough to have seen this episode when it originally aired, and I'm sticking with my feelings and thoughts about it.

She had to die. ORRRR, he could have taken her back with him at the time she was to die. Same effect.
@technoroom5Күн бұрын
Not necessarily the same effect. There would have been eternal questions about whether she was merely missing (and still alive) or not, which could have affected the timeline.
@WehavenevermetКүн бұрын
@@technoroom5 She could no longer actively effect the timeline as she would be suddenly gone long before she had the power to grow into a national movement.

Kirk loving the very person he is willing to let die for the good of the future. That‘s some cognitive dissonance, I would say. This conflict is virtually unbearable and hard to believe. I think it was better to cut this scene and keep the relationship more on the friend zone.

Understandable that this drivel was cut. Doesn't add anything to the story line.

Like my comment on "Conscience of the King," this would've stopped the episode cold. Maybe simplify it to make more romantic and less wordy would've helped. There was a bluray dvd set put out witin the last 10 or so years with missing pieces put back in. Mostly from seasons 1 and 2. Before that, there is a book with the same info. I have it. Example: Season 2, "The Deadly Years," when Kirk is given the injection to revere his aging, we only see his torso contracting from the shot. Soon, a youthful Kirk steps out of the turbo lift. In the dvd set, we see Kirk and Spock walking the corridor from sickbay to the turbo lift. An aged Kirk walks along side an aged Spock. But by the time they get to the turbo lift, Kirk's age is almost fully reversed. These photos are in the book. But I can't remember the dvd set. I'd like to get it. However, these film clips you are showing are pure gems. Edited for time, content...whatever they decided, you have a good shovel at finding these. Thank you very much for these little Christmas gifts you keep posting. Keep up the good work.😊

Thank you, James, for your highly excellent comments. If you ever do find out what DVD that is, I also, would love to purchase a copy, and present the deleted scenes here. I have many more gems to come. You are so very welcome, and I hope you enjoy all of them. Thank you for your wonderful words and encouragement. 👍🖖🏆

Why the heck did they delete this? I've never much liked this episode (gasp!) because it just doesn't spend enough time with this couple. They just obligingly fall in love, as in any other tv series of the day. This makes the episode different and spends valuable time on them. As well as knowing that Kirk will have to wait forever ... and it's the city on the edge of...why the heck did they delete this? It doesn't take long, and they could have easily cut a few minutes elsewhere.
