As per title: first solo flight! Nerve-wracking when the instructor steps out of the office, but I didn't have any issues.

Just got out of one of these bad boys a few hours ago... my first time, and it was SO FREAKING FUN! I can't wait to get to this point, but after today, I can see why this was so nerve-wracking for you.... So much to think about and such touchy controls, and I just barely got to test the waters.... I did manage to hover a little bit, but my god is it difficult at first! Congrats man and I hope I can get to this point soon!

Update, I'm now a private pilot, working at the Heli school front desk and working my way through instrument training! Every day up in the sky is still a blast! Can't wait to finish commercial and really start building hours!

First of all, great job! The first solo is always a memorable one. Secondly, to your instructor, (at the risk of sounding like a negative Nancy), I would advise against filming your students’ first solos. 100% of their focus needs to be on flying the helicopter, and there needs to be zero chance that they could be thinking about the video. Their mind could easily drift to the filming, how they’re going to post it to their social medias later, “wouldn’t it look cool on film if I did this”…, etc. Not every student would be guilty of these pitfalls, but if something bad were to happen on this flight, it would be very easy to put the blame on filming himself flying. Safety first, always, and I just see a potential problem here. Seeing how this was 5 years ago and he’s probably not instructing anymore, any instructor or student that watches this video needs to contemplate this thought.

Seeing all these Robinson videos I ask myself how you are going to fly for 2,5 hours with no armrest. Holding the crylic stick like that must hurt.
@Chang739
@Chang739 4 жыл бұрын
Very low hour pilots (like me in this video) usually have 'chicken wings' with the telltale white knuckles on the cyclic and elbow floating up in the air! As you learn to relax, you lower your arm and rest it on your right knee, its just flying with thumb and finger. Additionally, when cruising for long periods between A and B, the R22 has a 'Trim' control which 'recenters' the apparent force of the cyclic further forwards where it would rest in cruise. This cant be adjusted, its either on or off with the apparent center of force in the middle or forwards. Cheers!
@winnipegfiredep
@winnipegfiredep 4 жыл бұрын
@@Chang739 ah alright. So it is possible to rest your arm. Thought because of the bend cross bar it is not.
@Chang739
@Chang739 4 жыл бұрын
@@winnipegfiredep The T-bar rotates up/down with no effect on the helicopter, so you can lower it to your lap and fly from there no problems! Only the X and Y axis cyclic directions (as seen from above) control the helicopter
