The camera shown in video was E-M10 Mark II, but all sample images were taken during my review with E-M10 Mark III several years ago. Hope this clarifies some confusion, if any. Malaysia is still under lockdown, and I could not go find friends who have E-M10 Mark III. The E-M10 Mark II was borrowed from another friend. I did own an E-M10 Mark II myself several years ago, for about almost 2 years.

Not sure about some of your data Robin. According to my research, the most sold entry level mirrorless in Japan is the Canon M50 which has a much better autofocus than any Olympus camera, with it's dual pixel AF, especially the E-M10iii which Af is "adequate" at best. Second is Sony a6400, third is Olympus E-PL9 and finally the E-M10 iii. I have the E-M10 ii but i'm thinking of buying a E-M5 ii. I think the E-M5 ii is the best bang for the buck in Olympus, at that price range. Those who are really broke can even buy used old E-PLs or E-PMs and while a bit outdated, they don't "feel" that old. I still use a E-PM2 and i see nothing wrong with it. The E-PL1 is a classic and a lot of people love it!

It's so sad to see Olympus not getting the attention it deserves... I really don't want this brand to be extinguished... It's kind of infuriating seeing people only comparing 4000 dollars (and more) FF cameras when Olympus (in my opinion) gives so much more for less... I'll keep my faith

Let me tell you an E-M10 story, Robin. A good friend and I first discovered photography back in the 1970s. Before the end of the decade, both of us were working in the retail camera industry selling all major brands of SLR cameras of the day. He went into management with the company we worked for and ended up being hired by Pentax to work in their medical/scientific optics division. He left there to pursue graduate degrees and, many years later, when he decided to go "all in" on digital photography, he chose the Olympus OM-D E-M10 for it's portability and image quality. It has been the first of many Olympus cameras for him and he continues to be a fan. I was an Olympus owner from the beginning of the 4/3 days in the early 2000s and was pretty happy to hear about his decision and, to this day, nothing has changed my mind yet either.
@robinwong3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing Rob, appreciate it. Yeah the huge deciding factor, and the winning reason is portability - the compact form factor with everything else thrown in, at such a good value, the E-M10 series is well suited for the mass majority! Glad that your friend enjoyed the E-M10, and do continue to shoot more!

I whole heatedly agree! Three years ago I was sure I was going to get a Fujifilm camera, either the X-T20 or X-T100. The command dials were this button combo that made it feel mushy and not solid, EVF was lacking, I really didn't like how it felt in my hand. Best Buy happen to have Olympus there too but I never looked at them. Started playing around with the E-M10 II and could not commit to buying a camera that day. Spent time researching it and concluded, while I was going to lose 8mp, there are features that grabbed my attention with the Olympus I just wanted. Now the X-T200 is the closest camera to the E-M10 IV on the market. It now has a live composite mode. However I will not compromise. There is no IBIS, UHS-II card slot with a larger buffer, shadow and highlight curve. All things I use and can not do without now. Even though I have an E-M5 III, I still love shooting with my E-M10 II.

People don't understand how I always, always prefer the dual command dial control setup, over the multiple random senseless dials + button controls all over the body, Fuji may have that mechanical film nostalgia thing, but I treasure efficiency and being practical! Oh yes, the image stabilization! Olympus is second to none.

I own the first OM-D and it is still a wonderful camera, but I noticed that the E-M10 Mark II was a significant upgrade that had lots of new features such as the electronic shutter and was wonderful value for money. I am completely happy I bought it. Because I was once a professional I know when top gear is needed and when its not. I'm not surprised that the EM-10 was the best selling camera in Japan for the simple reason it really is close to professional level at entry level price. It's smaller size is actually a reason I prefer it to the more expensive models which are larger. I do a lot of HDR and my HDR preset makes HDR easily accessible when I want it without being forced to make and check many settings. Thank you for an insightful review.

Totally agree with all you said Robin. The series 10 cameras are an inspiration and move up from our phones, as it is easy to take it almost anywhere with ease. It doesn’t negate the value of using our phones but compliments our picture making opportunities , as we can add some pretty impressive glass to it to create some truly studding images. A great camera needs equally good glass, but the key here is the glass . There are examples of those who have made large pictures with both full frame and MFT cameras and you will be hard pressed to tell which camera took the picture . So, it is not surprising that the ten series is popular in Japan last year. I bought a new Mark two version before Christmas last year and have had no regrets . Sure, there are some truly great cameras from other manufactures out there , but the EM 10 Mark 2 ticked more boxes for me than the competition because of its all round compact design and the images it produces. That in no small way was down to you and your great videos Robin.

I so whole heartedly agree! I purchased the M10 after having owned and used the E-520, E-PL 2 and E-PL5 and using the M10 was a pivotal experience. The dual control knobs made it possible to make adjustments while keeping the camera up to my eye. I feel that the E M10 was responsible for me being able to really learn how to control the camera to capture better images. And, it's low price (especially since I bought it used), I was able to start buying lenses that could be useful to me. I moved up to the E M10 Mark II, and then added the E M5 Mark II. I still think the E M10 Mark II is a great camera and enjoy it as much as the E M5 Mark II, and it's one camera that I will not sell!

The IBIS of my E-M10 MkII can't hold a candle to my Pen F, and I miss the 20 MP sensor and especially the hi-res pixel-shift mode. But those points aside, it *is* a "serious camera" (as you rightfully point out). What I really appreciate is this small pop-up flash, it comes in handy when needed, and is always with me without having to think about it. I bought it used as a second camera for situations where I don't want to risk my Pen F - and found out that I use it more often than I thought I would. Highly recommended for everyone who wants an affordable, small and well build camera with lots of useful features and a very capable lens selection - and an "upgrade" path to even more serious stuff (E-M5 MkIII comes to mind, using even the same battery).

1:30 More so, it looks and feels like a 1970s/1980s original film SLR camera, like the OM1, OM2 and OM10. The retro style is perfect. The mark ii and iii have exactly the same on/off switch as the original OM1! It also feels the same! I adore the EN10 ii chrome or black. Especially black. I was always enthusiast, and M10 was first digital camera i decided to buy in 2015. It had all the advantages of digital cameras, while the absence of a mirror+prism was no longer a problem due delay. Paired with M.Zuiko 12-40 pro and FL-600R it was my main set until late 2019. Two dials and Manual mode allow for full control of exposure, so its great for people who have experience with film photography. Image quality is exceptional and can be compared with best professional cameras available. Actually a reason why i decided to buy M10 was that I compared images with Canon EOS 5D and the results were about the same.

@@robinwong DPreview has tool which allows to check image quality of the cameras side-by-side, different ISO, JPEG, RAW... So when I accounted for commonly used JPEG compression and different color filters (Canon is bit more saturated and contrasty - which can be achieved in post) EM-10 and EOS 5d Mk II can deliver about same amount of visible details. Those images are still there and everyone can check for himself. Also by 2019 i attended to a Halloween event, where friend of mine was taking pictures with fullframe Canon. I knew M10 quite well (using some of your tips), the only post processing i used was slight brightness/contrast adjustment and JPEG conversion, some cropping. 98% of shots taken on one event was perfect from the beginning, most of them was used. When I am looking back on those photos and compare them... my photos are bit too bright, i overused flash a bit on short focal lenghts. Her photos have more natural light to it, while yellow flash she used did not blown blue too much. But when it comes to sharpness... Well i think M10 has better results.

In the film days I had used Olympus cameras and then in digital days I switched to Nikon. I had a bunch of Olympus manual lenses and just 2 years ago I got an E-M10 Mark III to use with those lenses with an adapter. The fact that the camera had focus peaking and image stabilization for the price were major factors in my decision. When I started using it I was amazed by the quality as well as its focusing with modern Olympus lenses. Also considering its size the camera became a natural for me to pick up to take with me even though it was not my original intent to substitute it for my nikon equipment. The best camera is the one that you naturally want to pick up and use when you want to take pictures. It brought back memories of how much I liked the OM4 Ti in the film days. I've been looking at the em1 mark ii also. Just curious, what motivated you to look into this camera? Do you want more megapixels, features...?
@mikes44083 жыл бұрын
@@lucasn2535 i recently purchased the new 100-400 lens and think it would be a better match than the m10. When I got the m10 it was supposed to be a throw in the car camera not a wildlife. Also good time to upgrade to a pro camera or near pro camera for the price.

I came across this video again today and whilst I do not detract anything from my previous comments , I can only add that even now, with the rise of new models , I am totally happy with my EM10 Mkii . It does all that I want and more. Of course, understanding the limitations of any bit of kit ensures you can get even more out of it, because you play to its strengths to over come its weaknesses . Sure , the Mkiv is very good , but , I would not swap my camera for one. Why? Well, because I just like the feel of it and I am confident with the options it offers . The only thing I wish I could have is a revamped set of prime lenses with a F1.4 or .5 and better processing software that operates faster and lighter on the laptop . Whilst those wishes may appear reasonable , it is unrealistic to expect them anytime soon - but that does not stop wishing . Finally , I would like to see some software updates added to older cameras where possible , as that only makes a great camera even better . Thanks again Robin for your very informative insights on all things Olympus.

I still use my Olympus SH-50 and SH-1 pocket zooms. When I was the musician for the City of Auckland Morris Dancers, I recorded in video our dance performances, with the cameras mounted on my accordion as I was playing it. Their mass is smaller than that of my E-M10s, minimizing the whiplash of the camera as I was playing the accordion. The IS and the AF coped remarkably well. The LCDs show how the moving dancer faces are kept in focus. To get anything like the IS and AF performance with my E-M10s, I must use the 14-42 lens. The 40-150, 14-150 and 75-300 cause so much whiplash when I am moving, the in-body IS gets totally confused. The E-M10 II looses AF with moving ships at night in particular (on a tripod), also when zooming. The last pocket zoom that did this was the SZ-30MR (2011). The E-M10 IV does not loose AF at night and when zooming, but it hunts before regaining focus. With the pocket zoom videos I trimmed out the zooming because the microphones picked up the zooming motors. With the E-M10 II I have to stop the video before zooming, then use Single Focus (intended for stills), then start a new video clip. With the E-M10 IV I can keep a video running, but I trim out the focus hunting in post production. Both E-M10s are better for Gannets In Flight stills and videos than the pocket zooms are, because both EMF and LCDs have less lag. I don't loose the birds from one display refresh to the next. The E-M10s do give me more keepers suitable for 33x23 inch prints in each gannet colony visit than the pocket zooms do. I welcome the shorter Mark IV menu, with fewer unpredicted lockouts than I get with the E-M10 Mark II. The E-M10s produce fewer JPEG artifacts. But my pocket zooms remain in service.

I only can whole heartedly agree with you Robin, if it comes to the E-M10 series. Lots of camera for a, relatively, low price. Owning an OM-D-E-M10 Mk.II myself for 3 years now, I find it a great camera for people with a small budget who looking for a great camera. I originally bought it as an upgrade to my Olympus E-420, that I owned for 10 years when I bought a second hand E-M10 Mk.II. Although considered an "entry level" camera, I think it would be better to say that the E-M10 series cameras are much more a camera for people that want a great camera for a low price but with the features of the more expensive sister cameras of the same brand, like the E-M5 series and E-M1 series. In my honest opinion, I find the E-M10 series all in all a great camera that is light and small, but big enough to take great quality photos. Although it is a bit of a pity it is not weather sealed, has a rather small grip, especially when you put a telelens on it, it gives you enough control over the camera when holding it,. To have a better hold of the camera, I attached the Olympus ECG-3 handgrip to my E-M10 Mark II. Ibelieve OM Digital Solutions/Olympus solved this on the Mk.III and Mk.IV by making the grip a bit bigger on it. I love this small camera so much that I planning on getting myself the Mk.IV. On the Olympus UK group forum I even suggested some upgrades for a Mk. V such as weather sealing and some other great features that are also found on the E-M5 series and not to forget a descend handgrip for better control and sync IS. On the forum they dubbed it already the E-M10 "pro" because of the suggestions. In other words all the goodies from the E-M5 series but the compactness and pricing of the E-m10 series. You can find the link to this forum group and article here: www.e-group.uk.net/forum/forum/members-only/826044-mark-thackara-follow-up Wondering how you feel about that.

In terms of size and quality it probably is the most ideal compromise for travel and every day use. After all: the best camera is the one that's with you (Chase Jarvis) - and with the Olympus system in general, it is very easy to constantly have it with you. The lenses are compact but still delivering very sharp results and great bokeh too (e.g.: 45mm f1.8). While personally I do not own the E-M10 Mark III (I own the original E-M5 and the E-M1 Mark II), I have had the pleasure of shooting with it - and it is essentially a smaller E-M1 for the most part. If you want to use larger lenses (such as the 40-150mm f2.8), it is maybe not quite so ergonomic due to the handle, but fantastic in every other way. I love all sorts of cameras, but when it counts, I use my Olympus system. Because I know I can absolutely nail the focus, nail the exposure and leave my tripod at home due to the incredible IBIS. At the end of the day it doesn't matter which camera you use and even less what others think you should use. It matters that you take the shot and create photos you love. You can easily do that with older or budget equipment.
@robinwong3 жыл бұрын
I have to start to disagree with that notion, I'd say the best camera is not the one you have with you, but the camera that you want to take out and shoot with most! Having said that, the E-M10 series was never designed for serious, or professional work, and certainly not for handling much larger lenses. One drawback of the camera is the limited battery life, in comparison to E-M1 Mark II/III/X, the battery dies off too quickly. Also, it is hard to give up on the superb handling/grip of E-M1 series! They just fit the hand perfectly, something that is kinda a compromise for E-M10, being smaller, but that is the point, it is small!
@XTJ73 жыл бұрын
@@robinwong I think "the best camera is the one that's with you" is actually intended in the same way: it's with you because you cared to bring it along, it's what will give you the best shot in the situation because you will want to use it - but I really like your more explicit approach and I feel the same way. Sometimes I take oldy technically far inferior cameras out with me because I feel like shooting with it. That makes me happy and let's me create photos that I enjoy :) At the core that is what photography (at the minimum as a hobby) should be about: the fun of creating photographs. Also it doesn't necessarily have to be just one camera ;)

Hi Robin, I had seeing a lot of your videos , I was a Canon shooter 5D m IV, later I moved to Sony (a7iii), I use to set my camera with standards studio parameters f8, 125/s and 100 iso. When I put my flash trigger on top, I’m able to see the scene, do my compositions because my camera with flash on top no changes the exposition. I bought a Olympus OMD M5 iii with 45 1.2. I try to do the same but I can’t do it. What I missed in my settings?. Thanks Robin

Great video. I can add one more reason on top of yours is the design of the camera is kind of retro, try google OM-2 and you will know what I mean. I have been using Olympus cameras since their TTL film camera, way back only Olympus has TTL in their film SLRs.

thanks for this video, got one question for you: Does this Olympus EM10 camera become warm after being turned on for a few minutes without shooting videos(just looking through menu or shoot pictures)? I live in a tropical place, previously owned a Fuji xt20, and as soon as I turned it on, within 2 minutes I could feel the warmth in hand, and totally turned off my passion for shooting. So this potential issue is my biggest concern, would like to hear your input, thanks a lot.

Thanks. I completely believe you. I have the film OM-10 and OM-4Ti. Entry and flagship. Differences? Entry =M-10 is almost as sturdy and lacks only the advanced sophisticated options of the OM-4Ti. For more casual shoots, I use the OM-10. For general purposes, I get identical results. Also much cheaper to replace in case of an accident or theft. Only for dedicated shots, I use the OM-4Ti with its very advanced light metering system and high sync flash.

Hello Robin I enjoy your posts and videos. I am a Canon shooter and love the 24-70 f/2.8 lens that a use 100% of the time. lately, I started to be annoyed with weight of both the body and the lens. I think I am ready to switch to Olympus but worried about regretting such a move. Is the M.Zuiko pro 12-40mm f/2.8 equal to that of Canon F2.8? or is it more like Canon F4 image wise?

undoubtedly! yes E-M10 Mark II is one of my favorite! it's really lightweight and compact! image quality tip top! unless i'm in a very challenging environment such as very dim indoor cafe, or having very high contrast scene then i'll bring my E-M1ii out. else for casual shooting i don't think EM10ii can't get most of the jobs done. actually I still prefer the look and feel of EM10ii than it's bigger brother EM1ii although I own both of these I think I won't consider to sell my E-M10ii. few thing i really like about the EM10ii the dial feel and the clicking mechanical feel of the shutter button which you can't get from EM1ii maybe I'd train myself in EM10ii more than EM1ii. but IMO by far it's the best design I ever experience! don't forget it still inclusive a small little built in handy flash!

I owned an EM10 mkII and loved it. I have progressed to the EM1 then to the mkII and finally to the mkIII and pro lenses however there are times I miss the smaller size if the EM10. I still have my first Olympus camera an EPL2 in a drawer. I have been tempted to put a 17mm, 25mm or 45mm f1.8 on it and put it in a coat pocket just for snapshots of the grandkids. The small size is very enticing for sure.
@robinwong3 жыл бұрын
For non serious or professional use, the smaller size makes more sense. Especially for day to day casual use, something to carry around, or travel, every bit of size and weight saved is highly valued.

I have just this week purchased an em1 ii after taking the plunge to sell all my canon DSLR gear and move to a smaller but more sophisticated system (had 70d, 600d). I plan to use mostly with my 12-40 pro that I already have. I still have a em10 original that I still use, mostly with 17mm or 40-150 kit lens, due to its small size. It's a fun little camera! My daughter may inherit the em10 and I may upgrade it to the em10 iii as my second body still, mainly for the improved IS, AF and Evf, but either way em10's are great!

At that price point, I'd not ask for weather-sealing. We have perfectly workable versions of E-M5 and E-M1 series for weather-sealing.
