The creator/designer/programmer in this case is the actual "artist" if there even is one here. Like a pendulum dropping paint onto a canvas, the person or people who designed and set this machine in motion is responsible for it's work, even if the things it creates are not entirely in their control. This isn't particularly profound as far as I can see, given this robot is not a truly autonomous or even near-sentient thing. All the same, a machine following abstract algorithms isn't really creative or artful in itself, even if we assume its really art at all. It's either an extension of a humans creative design, or simply a pitiful immigration of someone's idea of human creativity.

The robot has a fixed algorithm that is searching for a result that it was told is right by the engineers and coders (who seem to be getting no credit at all, or more importantly, and interview that has them explain how they came up with Ai-Da's algorithms). A human develops its own algorithm (if you wanna go that route with describing human behavior that way) and has goals that change as they change; people also change physiologically over time, altering the way they think (exercising changes your DNA, etc). The robot seems to only be focused on getting a ride out of people, which would be only a recreation of the will of the people that built it. It achieves its vreator's goals, not its own individualistic ones. Individuality, as well as seeking to prove to others what an individual finds beautiful or correct, leads to creativity. This robot doesn't even come close to that. It does actually show what the future has in store with us when it comes to AI in the future: people are going to rush to put out a flashy product that actually doesn't do anything too impressive, and then try to shame us for calling it out for what it really is, cheap parlor tricks built by contractors who won't be given the credit they are due. Oh, and it's all done for publicity and profit.

@@exedeath I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but when it comes to any team of humans working on something, it is a collaborative process. An algorithm cannot do that, it can only follow prebaked instructions. Code can't do that either. It does not have the ability to become fascinated and try and communicate it's fascination. I hope that makes it clearer.
@exedeath3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDrLeviathan The human is just giving an score from 1 to 100, and doing nothing more than that, the ai is JUST using that number and what itself painting, to decide what should be done. @TheDrLeviathan3 жыл бұрын
@@exedeath i think you're over estimating what an AI can do at this stage. We don't even have--or, more like we only have the basic beginnings of--quantum computing. It would take enormous processing power to create sentience of any level. I've even heard rumors of Moore's Law running out of steam. We simply cannot create sentience yet. This AI is not sentient. It's not even really an AI. There is a program called Dunc's Algomusic that has been around for ages that has already done stuff like this. That program doesn't count as it's own being. You should check it out. It's actually pretty neat. This program here is doing roughly the same thing as Algomusic. It just makes pictures. There is also the high probability that what a sentient machine would call art might differ from a human's. It would be a different kind of creature. Valentine Pillman's speech from Roadside Picnic comes to mind.

Apparently there’s AI that are similar to Ai-Da that’s older than I am (pre 9/11). I remember reading about in late 00s and early 10s how there are AI teaching assistants in certain colleges after watching DBT play throughs. I think how media started pushing in aliens and ETs as a concept before it became widely accepted or believed is what DBT probably unintentionally started for AI and androids before we start seeing them on a wider scale in the next decade. I don’t doubt like genetics as a field that AI is really about to start taking off astronomically over the next decade in terms of development and prevalence. Boston Dynamics had a viral video of those cop dogs dancing last year and now the NYPD is using them on the streets. That was probably a more intentional example of what I was referring to with aliens and DBT.

It's an interesting question! It's certainly more than a printer, since it has a program that uses artificial intelligence to create different artworks. But if it were just a program and a printer it would certainly seem a lot less like an "artist" than its current robot-like form. It raises the question - how smart does the program have to be, and how how human-like does the hardware have to be, for it to seem like an artist to us? There's probably many people who would say that as long as it is a computer program and not a biological brain it can't be an artist, but as we get better at understanding the brain and building biological computers, it's a question that will be inevitable at some point in the future--this project is just asking it now.

What is the actual point of this? When we artist create we learn in the process, we make studies and try to become better each time, we also liberate ourselves and express things we need to let out. We feel accomplished when we succeed, we grow, we discover ourselves, but what is the actual point of machine creating “art”? What is it studying if its only a programmed machine, what is its goal if it doesn’t have a soul. It just seems pointless to me, just like ai apps that create digital “art”. What can it possibly convey if it doesn’t experience life as a human, it can’t relate to us and vise versa.

It's just a plotter. A very slow and low-resolution plotter. All its speeches are pre-written mumbo jumbo by the owners. It's just an arm plotting a pencil or dipping a brush in prepared pots of paint. It's not able to clean brushes between colors, so unless humans switch brushes between colors the marks progressively become sloppier. It can't set up its own paints or choose colors, this all has to be prechosen, laid out and mapped by humans. There's no decision in mark making. The marks it makes are just the result of how content the programmers are with how they can get the arm to perform, which is then always identical, except for when excess paint acumulates on the brush. But it's also not aware of the amount of paint on the brush, it just mechanistically transfers the brush between the pots and the paper. The result of this process is then supposedly 'inspired' by expressionism, whereas that is simply the painterly style that closest resembles the best this machine can do. It doesn't really paint from live models. The computer inside has to be fed a photograph (by the eye camera) which the arm then plots. The layering and the decisions of the styles for each layer are all decided and executed by humans. There are almost zero process videos of this machine. Certainly no videos of the whole process from start to finish. Because it's all just a bunch of humans creating art, with elements of it plotted by this machine. All the decisions and 'embillishments' and touch-ups that cause the artworks to look like complete objects are man made. The sculptures are even more farcical in that respect. The owners suggesting that some people find this problematic is just a way to manipulate the narrative and imply that this machine is somehow cutting-edge. Not saying that the images are worthless, but they are for the most part created by humans who are using a paint plotter, then placing the plotter front and center trying to convince people the plotter is actually the one who created the artworks. This machine is the equivalent of smearing some paints on the CMYK heads of a printer, adding a cell phone running chat GPT told beforehand to spew bullshit about dystopic literature and cybernetic art to any question asked, dressing the wole contraption in coveralls and calling it an 'ai artist'. .
