@TykeMison_6 ай бұрын
5PSI is a 34% increase in cylinder pressure/air charge and while there are losses, generally converts to a ~25% power gain. For a small output engine strained by a road car, "only 5 pounds" is a lot of power gain. For comparison, a 300hp engine with 5PSI boost would be making 375. 5PSI is a lot.

@@TykeMison_ it’s really not, diesels are made for high cylinder pressures. The only reason I said “only 5psi” is because jumbo said that he was shooting for around 8……and 5 is less than 8 ya know
@kensmith56946 ай бұрын
@@TykeMison_You made the point I was about to but I will add a small detail. When the fuel is shot in at higher pressures, it burns faster and more completely. On an engine what wasn't really designed to be all that clean and efficient this could add more power to the output from the same amount of fuel. Remember his exhaust temperatures were lower. In the opinion of Mr. Carnot, that means the engine part is more efficient.
@davidbenes5806 ай бұрын
Your egt alarm at 1000°F is very conservative. Generally 1200 to 1250 is safe. Diesels like the extra air. Adding more air drops egt's and makes more power due to more complete combustion. They prefer to run lean rather than rich. This is all assuming your charge air temps are not too high, thus intercoolers. Also, diesels are typically the most fuel efficient at about 600°F egt's. For your fuel economy testing try to keep it around that range for max economy. Love what you've been doing with these little cars. It been very enjoyable to see you do these crazy little projects!

These diesels have very high compression ratios to get the most out of them without forced induction. They tend not to get much from boost above 10psi, well they do but they tend to burn holes through the piston crowns. In Australia and Africa, the Toyota 1HZ is a legendary old lumbering NA diesel used in some small trucks and the Toyota landcruiser. People have been turbocharging them forever and usually 10PSI as a rough rule of thumb seems good. Anything much above that seems to blow the engines up unless they've had stronger pistons put in, usually with a reduced compression ratio of about 20:1 or 22:1 down from the factory 24:1. These kubota diesels are very similar with a 24:1 or 25:1 comp and the same style of fuek injection. If at all possible, now you have 2 of them I'd love to see you try and jury rig a reduced compression ratio, maybe by putting in a thicker head gasket? If you want a very cheap but even sketchier mod. Make a basic water methonal injection system. If you want to go even further you can mix a bit of nitromethane into the water methanol mix lol.

If I'm married to a certain boost pressure, a pulley makes sense. I rarely am and sometimes want to have different settings for different situations. For instance, I ran 17 psi on the street (which arguably made it too fast for the street and made torque steer a mother lover, but didn't blow stuff up on pump gas) and 30 psi when running race fuel on the track with my weekend racer. A diverter valve is almost as cheap and gives me options in the future without having to source and buy different pulleys in the future.

There was testing in the early 90s about supercharging diesel for improved efficiency and reduce soot. Theoretically, under boost, diesel engines are more efficient but turbos are always behind the fueling. Maybe with low boost there might be an MPG improvement, but at higher boost levels the parasitic lost of the amr500 might overcome the benefits. It’ll be fine to see where the balance of power and efficiency flips with different boost levels.
