Rob, I have been playing/abusing guitar since some time well before you were born, but (true confession) I haven't been particularly diligent about learning anything new or improving for a long time. This video is going to have me working (and looking for any others you have). Thanks for that. Looking forward to seeing you at VidCon & the Pomona show.

Rob you inspired me to pick up the guitar 8 years ago and make my own music. Three days ago i made a song with tapping and i was reminded of the nights when i would listen to this song on repeat to help me sleep and have good dreams. Today i was able to learn this song in an hour. Thank you so much everything thank you for making a huge impact on my life with your guitar

I think I finally figured out how to play this and sound good on acoustic. Real pain in the ass, and I lack skill and dedication for it, but maybe I'll manage to practice it enough to perform :). There are two main problems with this song on acoustic guitar: 1.Tapping past the twelfth fret is hard even on weaker tension and also quiet, maybe because I have lower tension. Most of this is solved by taking those parts down an octave. 10-12-0-0 and the like are also quiet on the second hammer-on, so you need to help the right hand with your left by pressing down on the string with the left pinky before hammer-on and removing left pinky fast enough for pull-off to sound properly 2. Tapping on 11-12th frets is really dissonant if you don't mute strings or fret them higher than the 3rd fret, because both halves of your string sound out almost with the same volume, and the headstock half of string is dissonant with your bridge half. Muting them is hard because 12th fret is high so you need to really push down your string or it won't be muted when tap on the 12th'll push down the string. That by itself isn't a problem, but during most of the song you need to immediatly pull-off, so you need to remove very fast your left hand from the string far enough that after the pull-off your hand won't be touching undepressed string, or you'll mute the pull-off. I think I figured out an alternative, but I'm not sure that it isn't harder: during 12-12-0-0 part of tab make first tap as usual, and replace the second with artificial harmonic with your middle and the ring finger then instead of pull-off pick the string with your middle finger, then make your usual second pull-off. The good news in this are that imo it sounds fine if accidentally you pick the string that is between the strings that you tap\harmonic on. I'll be happy if my comment somehow helps someone, or if someone actually figures out and learns to play this on acoustic, so that I know if it's actually possible :)

Rob, you talk a lot about how challenging it was for you, so I have a question. How often you write stuff that you can't really play right of the bat? I mean, I do stuff like that with guitar pro, with shredding solos and stuff, an then I procede to learn and get it right (is that cheating?) How is your process?
@fabianvanderelst9643
@fabianvanderelst9643 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think that's necessarily cheating, as long as you can play it afterwards. Also, the songwriting/composition part is also really important! It's not only the playing itself, but also coming up with something new. So I'd say it isn't cheating at all! 😊 Good luck further!

+Dominic Richard I beleive it's more than just volume, you need pickups to tab in general, one thing I don't think he mentions(but i'm only half way through the video) is that if you set the pickup on the guitar to the back pickup it makes tapping easier

@@itsquodo131 yeah he means bridge. I actually am tapping on ths neck pick up. I think it all has to do with hand posistioning

I'm trying to learn it but the fact that the pull of are not explained in the tab really confuse me at first i would love a complete tuto cause if you are a beginner just the tab is not enough

@RobScallon2 what amp are you using, I need a creamy smooth sounding effect with no crunch and my vox vt20+ won't do that for me

Crate GLX 65 I believe. Kind of a cheap amp, but reliable. I have the 120 watt version :)
