Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were in 10 films together during their careers and became best friends so it’s obvious the chemistry is there as they riff off one another. To see another great movie they co-starred in PLEASE check out “The Odd Couple” from 1968. It’s a classic!

Grumpy Old Men is one of my favorite movies but in all honesty I think the second one "Grumpier Old Men" is better than the first one. The acting chemistry between Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau is legendary. Both are class acts. Then you cast a woman with the class and sex appeal of Ann-Margret making it even better. That woman is like a fine wine. But of course who cannot talk about the comedy of Burgess Meredith in this film? He played the father perfectly. Honestly, the entire cast is a roll call of shining stars.

Actually, the rolling in the snow after being in the sauna is a real thing, we also do it sitting in hot tubs. The shock going from hot to cold and back again is therapeutic. So she wasn't being dramatic or showing off... she was just reacting to the shocking cold. EDIT: Funny enough... that is Micky from "Rocky" (Burgess Meredith).

whats most amazing is that Burgess Meridith Ad-Libbed all the lines in the scene thats why Jack Lemmon looks so surprised cause he didn't know what line Burgess Merideth was going to say next haha, most were a little to dirty for what the movie was rated for so they showed them in out takes at the end of the movie and i am sure glad they did cause they were hilarious, it shows what an old school actor could do and many of the greats like Burgess Merideth could do with Ad-Libbimg lines and made him such a great actor, my first memory of seeing him act was in the 1969 movie and then tv series Batman with Adam West and Burt Ward as the Penguin, R I P Burgess Merideth you are missed.

Thanks you two for giving a grumpy old grandpa a good laugh watching this movie. The only person in the world, my father, who is in his nineties. Called me and wished me happy Thanksgiving. Neither of my brothers, nor my daughter, granddaughter, or daughter in law even remembered me this year. They all have busy lives and I lost my wife three years ago. I live alone and KZbin and Facebook are most of my daily social interactions except for the three times a month that I go into town to buy groceries and fill my water jugs. Other than that. It's just me, my dog and my KZbin family. I always look forward to your videos. So when I saw that y'all uploaded a movie reaction today I was very happy and it's one of the better movies that you two have done lately. So I had my Banquet Turkey TV dinner and the one beer I saved and then enjoyed watching y'all react to the movie. Believe it or not. You two made this lonely thanksgiving just a little less lonely. Thank you both! ♥️

I am sorry that you were alone this year. I am glad that you DID get a phone call & were remembered by your father. That was nice. I also find it nice to be able to turn to my favourite KZbinrs for their nice "company" & reactions. It does make you feel like they are there with you. I think that next year you should take charge of the holiday (& any others) for yourself! Make a point of calling your various family members YOURSELF & not wait for them to make the 1st move that may not come. That way you WILL get the conversation, even if only for a few minutes for each case. Maybe you know some other people who might also be alone at the holidays? It certainly is not uncommon at all unfortunately. Do your best to make it happy & don't leave it to circumstances, as we all know, circumstances don't always work out in our favour! I don't know if it's possible for you, but if you have friends not too far away, or ones that could stay overnight/for the weekend, could YOU have a get together - even with neighbours & others you know without family near? If you can't cook, maybe the bunch of you could come up with a sort of plan on how to have a potluck with (semi) holiday foods (as you did alone - but maybe a little better ie. someone buys turkey sausage & cuts it into chunks & mixes it with a few boxes of stuffing & some canned cranberry sauce (heated of course) for on top. Someone buys a pumpkin pie & ice cream or whipped cream. Maybe someone brings apple cider & bread rolls. Then there are bunches of salads in a bag these days with the salad dressing packets & toppings included. They are a little more expensive, but maybe okay for a special occasion. I don't know if you have Campbell's - Gardenay soups where you live. They are sold in the tetra cartons next to canned soups & they have a really good squash soup variety. These are just suggestions to think about. If nobody is making something better for you (& it is important for you especially), then maybe work at it (& be creative if you have to) to make it good for yourself! (Even if the best you can do is watching your favourite KZbinrs watch a movie you have "saved" for the day & eating an extra special treat for yourself that day in food or dessert form [or both! - it IS the holiday after all!].) I know that you did do this to the best of your ability this year, but if you start planning now (for Easter if you celebrate & then for the others far in advance, maybe each year could be even a little bit nicer than the last. If money is tough, you might even be able to start saving literally just a dollar or 2 a week or so to have a bit more for your holidays to treat yourself a little extra more.) I hope you don't mind my suggestions & think that I am being too intrusive. I DO know what it can be like! When you see this note, it will be in 2024 - so Happy Belated New Year (by a few days)! I hope that this year will turn around for you & be a lot better & be the start of much better times ahead. Take care. 🙂

1) It is interesting that John and Max's friendship was torn apart by a woman who came between them and stayed apart until a woman came and drew them back together". 2) Sitting in the sauna and then running and jumping, usually into a snow bank, is a Finnish tradition; I was so surprised to see it added in this movie; they really did an excellent job building the characters and representing small-town Minnesota in this movie. 3) Nearly every lake in Minnesota, which is called the "land of 10,000 lakes", is encrusted with ice houses from when the ice is thick enough to be safe to when it gets too thin in the spring. The same people set up their shanties on the same lakes every year, so it's like a little community all its own out on the ice. 4) I'll echo everyone else here and say you must watch the sequel "Grumpier old Men"; it is just as good and just as Minnesota (though less cold looking).

What made this so special for those if us who where around when this came out in 1993 was the fact that these were all award winning actors in there day. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau both won accademy awards. Ossie Davis was not just an exceptional actor, director and writer but he was an activist in the civil rights movement in the 60’s along side of Martin Luther King. Ann-Margaret was a very sexy singer, dancer and actress who also won awards. She starred in the movie adaptation of The Who’s Tommy as well as starring along side Elvis in Viva Las Vegas. Yes, Burgess Meredith played Mickey in Rocky. He was a very prestigious TV, Stage and movie actor who’s career spanned from 1945 until his death in 1997. The then younger two actors Daryl Hannah and Kevin Pollak were also well known actors. Daryl played the mermaid along side Tom Hanks in Splash. Kevin Pollak was in A Few Good Men with Tom Cruise. Kevin is not only an excellent actor but also a comedian and does crazy good impressions of people. Like Jack Nicholson also in A Few Good Men which probably made for an interesting set. This movies holds up well. Loved your reaction to the out takes.

This movie is set and filmed in Minnesota. Ice fishing is fun. The "buildings" are called fish houses but some people call them shanty's. The come in all shapes and sizes and they are heated. There are the hard core folks that will actually camp out on the ice in their fish house. The ice is normally around 2 feet thick. It's a lot of fun.

I was Jack and Walter's bodyguard for an event done in their honor in the mid 90's. When it was over we got in a small elevator on the second floor and instead of going down as we expected, it went up to the third floor. The door opened and a very large woman was startled to see them and said she'd wait for it to come back up. As we started back down Walter said "We should have let her on. We would've gone down faster.". Jack just groaned and hung his head down. I then noticed his shoulders were shaking up and down in a silent laughter. Their friendship was solid gold. One of their last films together was "Out to Sea" and they were hilarious.

While I too know her as the mermaid from "Splash", I think most people know her as the replicant Pris from "Blade Runner" or as "Roxanne" in Steve Martin's modern remake of "Cyrano de Bergerac". She also starred as Robert Redford's client Chelsea in "Legal Eagles" and as the one eyed assassin in "Kill Bill Vol.2".

My best friend and I saw this movie in the theater back when it was released. We realized that we would eventually be like Mathau and Lemon. So - for many years we referred to each other as Moron and Putz. Watching this movie now makes me realize how much I miss him. RIP to my buddy, he passed in 2016... Funny story, my sister and I (grew up in the Deep South) didn’t know what”putz” meant as a kid. We watched this on HBO a lot and went around saying “moron” and “putz” to people in our southern town and nobody knew what that word meant. 😂 I love this movie.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau did several films together, going back to 1966….they have tremendous on screen chemistry, the public wanted to see them together in films because they were so funny. Their very classic film, The Odd Couple, was such a hit, it became a long running tv show starring two other famous actors. Lemmon and Matthau were best friends in real life and often appeared on talk shows together whenever they had a film coming out. There is a sequel to this film called Grumpier Old Men, which was also very funny!!

To answer your question about snow in Minnesota, I’d say yes, for the most part, it is like this every winter. It was filmed in Minnesota too, btw. But what I’ve found living here for the last 13 years or so, once the snow starts falling and sticking, which can be as early as October, it just stays and piles on and piles on until about April. Some winters are worse than others, but I can’t remember a winter that I’ve been here that I didn’t have piles of snow next to my sidewalk or driveway, several feet high, all winter long.

After your Beatles “Now and Then” reaction, I was thinking maybe you two would enjoy a Beatles movie. “A Hard Days Night”. It’s a satire of what the Beatles were going through all the time. There’re some really good songs on it that are normally not allowed on KZbin, but other reactors have reacted to the movie with the songs on it without any problem.
