What people need to check out is the heartbreaking episode (on KZbin) of "This is Your Life" that honours Bobby. You see him getting choked up when they talk about his mother dying a short time before but what he doesn't realize is that, that was his grandmother and his real mother is about to come on stage. The person he thought was his sister was his mother and the person he thought was his mother was his grandmother. His "sister" hangs onto and dotes on him like a proud mother (which she was) It's an amazing scene because the present viewer knows this and he doesn't and wouldn't for another ten years.

Bobby Darin was one of the most versatile singers in the history of popular music. He could sing any genre of music effortlessly, be it rock'n'roll, pop, country, folk, jazz, or standards. By the age of 25 he was headlining in Las Vegas. He died in 1973 at age 37 from complications following heart surgery.

Another classic song from this era: "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. It's a (sad) story but has been iconic for decades.
@phylliseich29922 ай бұрын
I love “El Paso”, it’s such a beautiful song. Many people do not realize that it is the first of a trilogy of songs. The second is”Falina”, which is her story, and the third is called “El Paso City”. This last one takes a big jump in time to modern day where a man is in a plane flying over the city. Not for the first time, he feels inexplicably drawn to Rosa’s while also fearing that death awaits him there. He has memories of a life and time not his own. It is meant to be the reincarnation of the cowboy from the first song. Fascinating stuff for it’s time, the songs are great listened to back to back for the whole story.

Darin also did "comedic impressions" of famous actors, Clark Gable, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart and many more, you can find a youtube video of Darin doing these "comedic impressions"..Talk about "multi-talented" Bobby had it all! Bobby Darin wrote this song with the popular DJ in the late 1950s, Murray the K. The DJ had dared Darin that he could not write a song that started with the lyrics "Splash Splash I was taking a Bath". Other songs you might want to react to are: 1) Beyond the Sea - probably Bobby Darwin's best recording. He is aspiring to be Frank Sinatra with this recording. 2) Queen of the Hop. 3) Dream Lover 4) If I were a Carpenter Darin broke into Music with Splash Splash, a Top 3 Billboard hit, but after a few years, he eventually switch to adult audience, singing Big Band music and even played Folk Music. Splash Splash and Mac The Knife are excellent, but Beyond the Sea is Timeless!

When I was a kid I there was a company that would put out compilation albums - songs by different artists, linked by a theme. One that I had was of "novelty" songs. This was on it, as was Surfin Bird. Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis as well and something by Ray Stevens. Guitar-zan I think. In a way, those compilation albums were a little bit like videos on a channel such as this - a chance to discover and listen to music you probably wouldn't have otherwise. These were already "old" songs when I was a kid and not the type of music my parents were into. Haven't thought of this song in years, yet I knew every word and every exclamation. That was fun.

Love Bobby Darin! And this was his very first hit single! This kind of fun/silly song is called a "novelty song" and they do still happen every 10 years so... the most recent one was probably "What Does The Fox Say?" in the 2010s. One of my favorite Bobby Darin songs is "Lazy River"! Definitely one you guys would enjoy!! 💖BTW, it's funny you mentioned Little Richard 'cause this song actually contains little references/winks to other 1950s songs, including Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly" (not sure if you noticed). Two other songs he name-drops are "Peggy Sue" and "Lollipop". 😁 The most amazing thing about Bobby Darin is that he did accomplish so much but, he actually only lived to be 37 years old!! 🤯 He had a severely frail heart so, he always knew he was living on borrowed time but, he was determined to make the most of it while he could! (And he definitely did).
