It's so beautiful how Rush was able to stay an independent band with very little label backing their whole career and have so much success. It was all talent and constant touring that got them noticed until "Moving Pictures" They had a lot of negative critics back then, but their popularity on the FM Rock radio stations kept 'em going and getting bigger anyway, Bet their induction into the Hall of Fame was even sweeter because of that.

Love you guys! But I am AMAZED that you HAVEN'T reviewed XANADU yet (by Rush, NOT Olivia Newton John), especially as much as you love Rush. Been a Rush fan since early 80's, and I agree with many who say that Xanadu is their greatest MASTERPIECE. PLEASE make sure it is NOT the studio version, which is very good, but nothing compares to their 1981 (Exit Stage Left) performance. You WILL be blown away. I am sure it's already been requested 100 times already.

No offense, but I like the Olivia Newton John/Electric Light Orchestra Xanadu much more than Rush's song. Being Canadian, I tired of their endless pretention after about 15 years... and had barely started on their second song lol.

No dummies in a RUSH crowd. That was one of the coolest things about their concerts. RUSH was special, that’s the simplest way to put it. It’s one of the bands that makes me wish for the Rock and Roll Time Machine to take deserving youngsters back and show them how it’s done! Impossible to describe that experience in those days. I’d be a great tour guide. I took many newbies to many concerts and it was always a pure blast! They were always blown away. Wow was the most common word.

YES, some Rush. This the first song Rush fans heard after their epic 2112 album. Speaking of 2112, that's where you guys need to go. It's a whole album side but maybe instead of doing three videos one day, you could just do 2112. But I would also live for you guys to check out the Garden from their last studio album Clockwork Angeles. I've been a Rush fan from the beginning in 1974 & the Garden is one of my favorite Rush songs ever. Great video today guys.

Rush is fun because they went through so many phases. Here they're in their pure prog phase. That was 2112, A Farewell to Kings, and Hemispheres. After Hemispheres they admitted they simply couldn't keep up that sort of complicated prog rock energy and raise families at the same time, so they dialed it back. Personally, my favorite Rush album is the 1985 album Power Windows. If y'all haven't reacted to "Marathon" yet, you should. That's possibly my favorite Rush song ever.

I believe a big part of what made Rush special, especially early on in the 70's, was Aleks' classical guitar playing. He came up with some beautiful classical lines that gave that band their other-worldly sound. Songs like Lessons, Farewell To Kings, 2112, The Trees ... he was so creative.
@johncampbell756

Thus is my second favorite Rush album. The birds at the beginning are not sound effects. They moved Geddy's synths and Neil's percussion bells outside on either side of a courtyard. Alex' guitar pans back and forth because he literally walked back and forth between them.

My personal favorite Rush album, and I've been a fan since their first album hit when I started high school. If "2112" was their first foray into prog, then this album was their first full prog album. Jay, you gotta do "Cygnus X1: Book One" off this album. The bass is phenomenal in it, and the drums not to shabby either.

While college students in the late 70s were listening to Elvis Costello or The Talking Heads, those of us who aspired for rock with a thinking-person's soul were listening to Rush. This was a band that navigated through the late Zep era, with kids blasting Nugent or BOC or AC/DC from their Jensens in their beat-up Gremlins. Rush were what "those kids" listened to...when secretly, every single musician I knew put them high on their personal fave list.

As a classically trained guitarist this is one of my all-time favorite Rush pieces.The classic overture is fantastic. Over the years I have had conversations about musicianship when it comes to various groups. I am not saying this just because they are my Canadian boys. Their change overs are some of the best ever, especially for a three piece band. We talked about this for days when it came out. I played it until the album was almost worn out. This is the album that started my RUSH journey after seeing them warm up for Blue Oyster Cult in 1978. My brother went out the day after that concert & bought AFTK which had just come out. That concert changed my life. As a drummer, I couldn't believe what I was witnessing. I mean Albert Bouchard of BOC is no slouch behind the kit, but the magic I felt from Neil was transcendent. The next year when Hemispheres came out, we slept out for tickets & I was able to see them for their first headlining tour from the 4th row right in front of Geddy. Still to this day, the loudest concert I have ever been to & to this day they are still my favorite band.

The first time I saw them, I was just tagging along with my friends to see a concert from a band I never heard of. This album had just come out and they were touring for it. I fell in love with them, and this is still one of my favorite albums. It's the 2nd one of a five-album streak of brilliance. And this song has always been on of my favorites. The way the bass bounces around is so fun! Also,. the lyrics feel so... current. I swear it could have been written today as opposed to over forty years ago. I love the drama in this song. I love how it ends on "Can't we find the minds to lead us closer to the heart?", and then you flipped the vinyl over and the first song on the 2nd side was "Closer to the Heart", which then recommended what is needed to address the problems in "A Farewell to Kings".

Losing it is one of their best and most poignant songs. It’s absolutely beautiful. Listen to THOSE lyrics. It’s the only time they became a 4 piece band. You’ll see why I say that. That song really hits. Especially if you are of a certain age. It’s Neil’s reflection on getting older. It’s a stunning song. They only played it live once, I believe.

Fun fact. I was 12 years old and were playing in the park near some factories in my home town next to where Rush grew up. We heard amazing music coming from the fctory we climbed on some dumpsters to get s good look through the window and we saw them recording in turn the noticed us kids. They came out and talked about music, hockey( thats what us Canadians do) and their cars were so cool we tslked about their favorite cars. They were so down to earth. Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks. One of yhe coolest moments of our lives. I got to see them twice in 88 and 03 they were Epic❤

Been a fan since their first record and if I’m not mistaken Neil wrote most of their lyrics after he joined the band great music

Rush is an acquired taste? I guess I acquired that taste the first time I heard them in 1976!!! And still haven’t lost it. 😊

that note at 3:42 is something only geddy can do. i've never heard a male singer capable of doing that with his voice.
