No girl group brought the funk like En Vogue. Destiny’s Child was never funky and TLC had some funky tunes, but that type of R&B died at the end of the 90s along with almost all good music. There were a few decent songs in the early 2000s, but since then, it’s one assembly line piece of trash after another. Even pop singers can’t sing. Didn’t that used to be a prerequisite?

Salt N Pepa had 'Let's Talk About Sex' and it was eye opening and brought the subject of sex to the forefront. En Vogue talking HARD about prejudice. Groups like this brought the talk to the table. Dawn Robinson has stated in numerous interviews that En Vogue's Management had EV's members sign a lengthy, convoluted contract in which it was buried in the fine print that the 4 (original) members would get $0.02 each per record. Keep in mind that Dawn, Maxine, Terry, and Cindy were ALL young at the time, all between age 20/21 (Dawn), and the others were likely around their mid-20s. Dawn has stated that none of them were aware of these royalty terms in the contract, and based on other remarks from her, my understanding is it seems like collusion between the Management and the label's Legal Representation, which is all too common in the music industry. Lastly, during that time in the 1990s, Terry dated music producer Denzil Foster, and I don't recall most of the details, but from that relationship, she was able to record and release a solo record in 1995. That, along with the financial manipulation of En Vogue's members, created turbulence and tension, and unfortunately, the group's original lineup was not sustainable. Dawn left in April 1997 and Maxine left in 2001.

I'm an old guy I've been listening to music for a very long time. My favorite genre is blues driven Rock but I do like all music. When this song came out I asked my friend who worked at a rock station in my area. Why don't you play this song or even Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana. They're both great rock songs. His answer was correct and it was it's the Public's perception of the artist is why we don't play those songs. Kind of sad isn't it. Great music not getting played. I think the 1st really popular girl group is The Andrews Sisters in the 1940s. They appeared in a lot of movies. En Vogue even did one of their songs called "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" on their debut album, except En Vogue's version is called "Hip Hop Bugle Boy". Another popular girl group is The Shirelles from the early 1960s. There were a little before The Supremes made it big. Also check out the female gospel groups The Caravans & The Clark Sisters.
