I miss the 70’s. Radio stations played such a variety of music. We were exposed to rock, soul, R&B, country etc… it made the listening experience so much more fun and interesting. Plus we all have memories of certain songs during events in our life. I think things are too segregated now.

Are you saying there was an individual radio station that played all those genres? I don't remember such a thing. Each radio station seemed to be focused mainly on a particular genre, maybe adding a genre where the lines were blurred, for instance R&B or Pop might also play some disco. If there was a crossover hit, that was a different thing. I lived in a fairly big city. Country stations played country. R&B played R&B. Hard Rock played hard rock. And on and on.

Average White Band is a great example of one of those bands that I probably wouldn't have ever heard either if not for this channel. I've known the name of the band since I was a kid but, for some reason, always had it in my head that they were one of those interchangeable (for me, a little kid, at the time) '70s southern rock bands that my mom's dirtbag second husband would blast in his Camaro in between rounds of smoking weed and not having a job. Because I enjoy the RSR vibe, though, I end up watching every video regardless of whether I know the artist or not and end up finding gems like the Average White Band. They are NOT AT ALL what I thought they were and WOW they are amazing. This is definitely a rabbit hole I'll be diving down immediately, using some of the suggestions in the other comments here as good starting places.

Without seeing them, most people have thought that they were a black group because of how soulful they sound. I imagine you were glad you got to see them live for the 2nd time, because a lot of people have reacted to this band's name in a similar way. Please keep in mind that their name was never meant to have any negative racial connotations, they started in the early 70's back in Scotland and their name was birthed from a quirky joke, as they had a friend that traveled to a lot of different places around the world, upon his return from his journeys he would make statements like: "the weather there was either too hot or too cold for the "average white man." They heard things like that so many times from this guy, that they thought to themselves, hey let's call ourselves the "Average White Band!!!" I learned somewhere in another comment that makes great sense about the "Marketing of their Name" using the word AVERAGE: "under-promise" but "over-deliver!!!" And wow, do these guys ever deliver the soul & the funk!!!

Hamish Stuart (high falsetto) sang lead on this track and IMHO his voice gives off some "Marvin Gaye" vibes...Alan Gorrie was the backup singer harmonizing with him...

Gotta hit my favorite, Schoolboy Crush. One of my favorite bands growing up. Blew me away when I found out they were from Scotland.

That outstanding vocalist is Hamish Stuart. His voice is unmistakable; you have good taste. The band is actually Scottish, from Glasgow. I'd love to know exactly where these superb musicians caught the R and B/Jazz bug, but it proves one thing, Music is a universal language.

Don't mess with the Average White Band!!! The funkiest soul band to come out of Scotland!!! These guys were not pretenders, they're the REAL-DEAL!!! They have soul & funk just "ooozing" through their veins!!! They came out in 1972 and they are still touring today with 2 Original Band Members keeping their legacy going!!!

Drove cross country by myself in 1977 with everything I owned, and a cat, in my little car and 3 eight track tapes; Led Zeppelin II, Pink Floyd's Animals and Average White Band's Soul Searching. Hearing this again I'm out on that highway with no home, no job and no love of my own.
