When my granddaughter was about 6 or 7, she'd get off the school bus at my house. We'd have an after school snack and then do her homework. I always had either a mellow 70's or a Bread station playing. One day, "Guitar Man" by Bread played. She paused, midway through the song, and said, "Now THIS is real music, Mimi"! And went right back to her homework! That girl has good taste! 😉🧡

Y'all are such a sweet couple! That's one of the things that makes this channel so enjoyable. This from a guy who's been married to the love of his life for 40 years now. My wife and I married in 1982. This style of song is called a ballad, and this one is especially sweet. The lead singer is David Gates who also wrote all or almost all of the songs. This stuff was on the radio when I was 18 or so. The rest of the band wanted to do more rock and that's what eventually broke up the band. They did have a couple of rock songs like Mother Freedom (fav!) and Truckin' Down the Highway (another fav). In their concerts all the ladies were swooning over David Gate's voice and there were just enough rock songs to keep the guys happy. Nothing wrong with being a romantic, Amber, even a hopeless one! I'm a sucker for these ballads! There are some real musical gems in this song. If you listen back to it and try to ignore the vocals (I know, hard to do) and listen to the guitar chord changes and the sweet fills. You called out the strings and they add a lot but you really have to listen to find what makes this song so great. My guitar teacher taught me that the space between the notes are as important as the notes themselves. Not everything has to be shredding to be good or great. Some other songs you'd probably like are Baby I'm-a want You, Aubrey, Guitar Man, Sweet Surrender, and Everything I Own. Fun fact, David Gates is from Tulsa, Oklahoma! So there!

I always liked Bread and I really love a lot of 70's pop and rock, and I don't shy away from the soft stuff. I'm a sentimental guy! But listening to it also provides some context that will help you understand why punk eventually came along, and why post-punk and New Wave was such an exciting thing in the late 70s and on into the 80s. I love it all... Good times!

I attended a military school in the late '60s and early '70s. Some of us (including me) boarded there, meaning I only went home on the weekend. We lived in barracks (big rooms with single bunkbeds) and each one had a "house mother" a single woman, typically older and I think often semi-retired from something else. They had a studio apartment at one end of the barracks, and lived there 24/7, except in the summer. Sometime I suspect maybe in 1971-2 for some reason they hired a young guy to do this duty, not sure why. I'm not sure what he was doing there either, why he was doing it. In any event he moved these enormous speakers and a top-of-the-line stereo into that ttiny apartment, and he let us come in there and listen to his music. Bread was one of the groups he listend to, along with the Eagles and America, and I distinctly remember this song, along with some others. The school was pretty close to hell, but this was one of the high points I guess.

I also love all of Bread’s softer songs, but you haven’t appreciated their full sound until you also listen to songs like Mother Freedom, Truckin’, Let Your Love Go, and Down On My Knees. Just sayin’….

Love Bread! Especially “If”. Really would love for you to do some live Jethro Tull. “My God” from the Isle of Wight concert. Unbelievable flute playing you have to see. He had only played the flute for 2 years and was one of the best!

Melodic acoustic flow and easy listening vibe of lyrics...those are the words i'd choose to describe Bread....everytime i here one of their songs, its takes me back to the seventies as to where i was, who i was with, the colors of the time....just everything and nastalgic style of the 70's just floods my mind

Bread was formed by some of the finest sessions men at that time, which was why they were invited by Simon and Garfunkel to help them create Bridge Over Troubled Water. Their pianist, Larry Knechtel, played that fantastic keyboard on the title track

Well, you've now covered this one (a #1 song) and "If" (#4) and "Everything I Own" (#5), as well as "Aubrey" (#15). The remaining Top 5 hit, "Baby, I'm-a Want You" (#3) is one of their iconic songs, although they also found success with "Lost Without Your Love" (#9), "It Don't Matter to Me" (#10) and three more Top 20 songs. Personally, I'm rooting for "Guitar Man" (#11), just so we can talk about Larry Knechtel, RIP. But anything is cool.

David Gates' voice is so gorgeous. Dusty Springfield also recorded this song for a 1971 album entitled "Faithful" that was pulled and not released until 44 years later in 2015, many years after her death. I think it might have also showed up on a deluxe recording of "Dusty in Memphis" later as well. I love her take on this beautiful song too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaLYYXuQprVjj5o

I *hope* that you two, already, understand that: there is, AT LEAST, a little bit of "double entendre" going on in the title and lyrics of this song! To "make it," in the '70s was, not just, "to succeed" (or: maybe that ls an additional reference point, here 🤷🤷), but: to have sex. "To make love." Absolutely. Common, colloquialism, used by a vast number of people under 30, then (at least!). ...but Gates, here (Yes: the main vocalist and keyboard player, here, is: David Gates. hew is, also, the song-writer.), "flips the expectation" (a LITTLE - NOT 'entirely'!); taking a somewhat "lewd" or "forward"-seeming statement and turning it ...well, NOT "purely romantic," by ANY means! ...but away from some: "c'mon and f**k me" pseudo-ballad. 😛 ...to "succeeding in life" and in a relationship with the spoken-to "you." ...But there's a 'wink-and-a-nod' there, as well, still....saying: "I, really, wanna schtupp you, baby..."😛🤦 ...it's.actually: kinda-weird... 🤷 MOST people, really, ONLY like, or ever LISTEN to the David Gates songs, from Bread (the ones he wrote/(rarely) co-wrote and sings lead on)....However: there ARE other quality song-writers IN the band, the main one being: Guitarist: Jimmy Griffin (also: guitarist/bassist: Robb Royer [not a typo. He spells his first name with 2 "b"s🤷].) Both Griffin's and Royer's stuff tends to have a slightly more "rocking" element to them (although: DON'T think: Def Leppard/AC/DC/MetallicA/etc. No....think, more like: "heavy Beatles" or "heavier E.L.O." ...something more akin to that.). David Gates had the major hits for the band (11 of 'em!), though. (This is, partially, what led to their disbanding, as well. Griffin's songs were NEVER chosen as "single A-sides" and he felt extremely disrespected, over time.) -The "huge" songs you are "missing" (from having listened-to, yet), would be: "Baby, I'm-a Want You" and "Diary" "Mother Freedom" is a killer tune, as well (and with a but more 'edge.'). -Definitely a great band and a "radio standard" from the 1970s (especially: early-on in the '70s).
